remember not which it was察Pigeons are then related to carry and recarry
letters此 and Mr。 G。 Sandys察 in his Travels察 relates it to be done betwixt
Aleppo and Babylon察But if that be disbelieved察it is not to be doubted that
the Dove was sent out of the ark by Noah察 to give him notice of land察
when to him all appeared to be sea察and the Dove proved a faithful and
comfortable messenger。 And for the sacrifices of the law察a pair of Turtle´
doves察or young Pigeons察were as well accepted as costly Bulls and Rams察
and when God would feed the Prophet Elijah察after a kind of miraculous
manner察he did it by Ravens察who brought him meat morning and evening。
Lastly察the Holy Ghost察when he descended visibly upon our Saviour察did
it by assuming the shape of a Dove。 And察 to conclude this part of my
discourse察 pray remember these wonders were done by birds of air察 the
element in which they察and I察take so much pleasure。
There is also a little contemptible winged creature察an inhabitant of my
aerial element察namely the laborious Bee察of whose prudence察policy察and
regular government of their own commonwealth察 I might say much察 as
also of their several kinds察and how useful their honey and wax are both
for meat and medicines to mankind察but I will leave them to their sweet
labour察without the least disturbance察believing them to be all very busy at
this very time amongst the herbs and flowers that we see nature puts forth
this May morning。
And now to return to my Hawks察from whom I have made too long a
digression。 You are to note察 that they are usually distinguished into two
kinds察namely察the long´winged察and the short´winged Hawk此of the first
kind察there be chiefly in use amongst us in this nation察
The Gerfalcon and Jerkin察 The Falcon and Tassel´gentle察 The Laner
and Laneret察 The Bockerel and Bockeret察 The Saker and Sacaret察 The
Merlin and Jack Merlin察 The Hobby and Jack此 There is the Stelletto of
Spain察The Blood´red Rook from Turkey察The Waskite from Virginia此And
there is of short´winged Hawks察 The Eagle and Iron The Goshawk and
Tarcel察The Sparhawk and Musket察The French Pye of two sorts此
These are reckoned Hawks of note and worth察but we have also of an
inferior rank察

Gentlemen察if I should enlarge my discourse to the observation of the
Eires察the Brancher察the Ramish Hawk察the Haggard察and the two sorts of
Lentners察and then treat of their several Ayries察their Mewings察rare order
of casting察and the renovation of their feathers此their reclaiming察dieting察
and then come to their rare stories of practice察I say察if I should enter into
these察and many other observations that I could make察it would be much察
very much pleasure to me此but lest I should break the rules of civility with
you察by taking up more than the proportion of time allotted to me察I will
here break off察and entreat you察Mr。 Venator察to say what you are able in
the commendation of Hunting察to which you are so much affected察and if
time will serve察I will beg your favour for a further enlargement of some
of those several heads of which I have spoken。 But no more at present。
Venator。 Well察 Sir察 and I will now take my turn察 and will first begin
with a commendation of the Earth察as you have done most excellently of
the Air察 the Earth being that element upon which I drive my pleasant察
wholesome察hungry trade。 The Earth is a solid察settled element察an element
most universally beneficial both to man and beast察to men who have their
several recreations upon it察as horse´races察hunting察sweet smells察pleasant
walks此the earth feeds man察and all those several beasts that both feed him察
and afford him recreation。 What pleasure doth man take in hunting the
stately Stag察 the generous Buck察 the wild Boar察 the cunning Otter察 the
crafty Fox察and the fearful Hare And if I may descend to a lower game察
what pleasure is it sometimes with gins to betray the very vermin of the
earth察 as namely察 the Fichat察 the Fulimart察 the Ferret察 the Pole´cat察 the
Mouldwarp察and the like creatures that live upon the face察and within the
bowels of察the Earth。 How doth the Earth bring forth herbs察flowers察and
fruits察both for physick and the pleasure of mankind and above all察to me
at least察the fruitful vine察of which when I drink moderately察it clears my
brain察cheers my heart察and sharpens my wit。 How could Cleopatra have
feasted Mark Antony with eight wild Boars roasted whole at one supper察
and other meat suitable察if the earth had not been a bountiful mother 拭But

to pass by the mighty Elephant察 which the Earth breeds and nourisheth察
and descend to the least of creatures察 how doth the earth afford us a
doctrinal example in the little Pismire察who in the summer provides and
lays up her winter provision察 and teaches man to do the like The earth
feeds and carries those horses that carry us。 If I would be prodigal of my
time and your patience察 what might not I say in commendations of the
earth拭 That puts limits to the proud and raging sea察 and by that means
preserves both man and beast察that it destroys them not察as we see it daily
doth those that venture upon the sea察and are there shipwrecked察drowned察
and left to feed Haddocks察when we that are so wise as to keep ourselves
on earth察walk察and talk察and live察and eat察and drink察and go a hunting此of
which recreation I will say a little察 and then leave Mr。 Piscator to the
commendation of Angling。
Hunting is a game for princes and noble persons察it hath been highly
prized in all ages察it was one of the qualifications that Xenophon bestowed
on his Cyrus察that he was a hunter of wild beasts。 Hunting trains up the
younger nobility to the use of manly exercises in their riper age。 What
more manly exercise than hunting the Wild Boar察the Stag察the Buck察the
Fox察or the Hare 拭How doth it preserve health察and increase strength and
activity
And for the dogs that we use察who can commend their excellency to
that height which they deserve 拭 How perfect is the hound at smelling察
who never leaves or forsakes his first scent察but follows it through so many
changes and varieties of other scents察even over察and in察the water察and into
the earth What music doth a pack of dogs then make to any man察whose
heart and ears are so happy as to be set to the tune of such instruments
How will a right Greyhound fix his eye on the best Buck in a herd察single
him out察 and follow him察 and him only察 through a whole herd of rascal
game察 and still know and then kill him For my hounds察 I know the
language of them察 and they know the language and meaning of one
another察 as perfectly as we know the voices of those with whom we
discourse daily。
I might enlarge myself in the commendation of Hunting察 and of the
noble Hound especially察as also of the docibleness of dogs in general察and

I might make many observations of land´creatures察that for composition察
order察figure察and constitution察approach nearest to the completeness and
understanding of man察especially of those creatures察which Moses in the
Law permitted to the Jews察which have cloven hoofs察and chew the cud察
which I shall forbear to name察 because I will not be so uncivil to Mr。
Piscator察 as not to allow him a time for the commendation of Angling察
which he calls an art察but doubtless it is an easy one此and察Mr。 Auceps察I
doubt we shall hear a watery discourse of it察but I hope it will not be a long
one。
Auceps。 And I hope so too察though I fear it will。
Piscator。 Gentlemen察 let not prejudice prepossess you。 I confess my
discourse is like to prove suitable to
