periwinkles and limpets察 below again察 about the neap´tide mark察 the
region of the corallines and Algae furnishes food for yet other species
who graze on its watery meadows察 and beneath all察 only uncovered at
low spring´tide察 the zone of the Laminariae the great tangles and ore´
weeds is most full of all of every imaginable form of life。 So that as
we descend the rocks察we may compare ourselves likening small things
to great to those who察descending the Andes察pass in a single day from
the vegetation of the Arctic zone to that of the Tropics。 And here and
there察even at half´tide level察deep rock´basins察shaded from the sun and
always full of water察keep up in a higher zone the vegetation of a lower
one察 and afford in nature an analogy to those deep ;barrancos; which
split the high table´land of Mexico察down whose awful cliffs察swept by

cool sea´breezes察the traveller looks from among the plants and animals
of the temperate zone察and sees far below察dim through their everlasting
vapour´bath of rank hot steam察the mighty forms and gorgeous colours
of a tropic forest。
;I do not wonder察─ says Mr。 Gosse察 in his charming ;Naturalist's
Rambles on the Devonshire Coast; p。 187察 that when Southey had an
opportunity of seeing some of those beautiful quiet basins hollowed in
the living rock察and stocked with elegant plants and animals察having all
the charm of novelty to his eye察they should have moved his poetic fancy察
and found more than one place in the gorgeous imagery of his Oriental
romances。 Just listen to him
;It was a garden still beyond all price察 Even yet it was a place of
paradise察 And here were coral bowers察 And grots of madrepores察 And
banks of sponge察as soft and fair to eye As e'er was mossy bed Whereon
the wood´nymphs lie With languid limbs in summer's sultry hours。 Here察
too察were living flowers察Which察like a bud compacted察Their purple cups
contracted察And now in open blossom spread察Stretch'd察like green anthers察
many a seeking head。 And arborets of jointed stone were there察And plants
of fibres fine as silkworm's thread察Yea察beautiful as mermaid's golden hair
Upon the waves dispread。 Others that察 like the broad banana growing察
Raised their long wrinkled leaves of purple hue察 Like streamers wide
outflowing。' ´ KEHAMA察xvi。 5。
;A hundred times you might fancy you saw the type察 the very
original of this description察tracing察line by line察and image by image察the
details of the picture察 and acknowledging察 as you proceed察 the minute
truthfulness with which it has been drawn。 For such is the loveliness of
nature in these secluded reservoirs察 that the accomplished poet察 when
depicting the gorgeous scenes of Eastern mythology ´ scenes the wildest
and most extravagant that imagination could paint ´ drew not upon the
resources of his prolific fancy for imagery here察but was well content to
jot down the simple lineaments of Nature as he saw her in plain察homely
England。
;It is a beautiful and fascinating sight for those who have never seen
it before察to see the little shrubberies of pink coralline ´ 'the arborets of

jointed stone' ´ that fringe those pretty pools。 It is a charming sight to
see the crimson banana´like leaves of the Delesseria waving in their
darkest corners察 and the purple fibrous tufts of Polysiphonia and
Ceramia察'fine as silkworm's thread。' But there are many others which
give variety and impart beauty to these tide´pools。 The broad leaves of
the Ulva察 finer than the finest cambric察 and of the brightest emerald´
green察adorn the hollows at the highest level察while察at the lowest察wave
tiny forests of the feathery Ptilota and Dasya察and large leaves察cut into
fringes and furbelows察 of rosy Rhodymeniae。 All these are lovely to
behold察 but I think I admire as much as any of them察 one of the
commonest of our marine plants察 Chondrus crispus。 It occurs in the
greatest profusion on this coast察in every pool between tide´marks察and
everywhere ´ except in those of the highest level察 where constant
exposure to light dwarfs the plant察 and turns it of a dull umber´brown
tint ´ it is elegant in form and brilliant in colour。 The expanding fan´
shaped fronds察 cut into segments察 cut察 and cut again察 make fine bushy
tufts in a deep pool察and every segment of every frond reflects a flush of
the most lustrous azure察 like that of a tempered sword´blade。; ´

And the sea´bottom察 also察has its zones察 at different depths察 and its
peculiar forms in peculiar spots察affected by the currents and the nature
of the ground察the riches of which have to be seen察 alas rather by the
imagination than the eye察 for such spoonfuls of the treasure as the
dredge brings up to us察 come too often rolled and battered察 torn from
their sites and contracted by fear察mere hints to us of what the populous
reality below is like。 Often察 standing on the shore at low tide察has one
longed to walk on and in under the waves察as the water´ousel does in the
pools of the mountain burn察 and see it all but for a moment察 and a
solemn beauty and meaning has invested the old Greek fable of Glaucus
the fisherman此 how eating of the herb which gave his fish strength to
leap back into their native element察 he was seized on the spot with a
strange longing to follow them under the waves察and became for ever a
companion of the fair semi´human forms with which the Hellenic poets
peopled their sunny bays and firths察feeding ;silent flocks; far below on

the green Zostera beds察or basking with them on the sunny ledges in the
summer noon察 or wandering in the still bays on sultry nights amid the
choir of Amphitrite and her sea´ nymphs此
;Joining the bliss of the gods察 as they waken the coves with their
laughter察─
in nightly revels察whereof one has sung察
;So they came up in their joy察and before them the roll of the surges
Sank察as the breezes sank dead察into smooth green foam´flecked marble
Awed察and the crags of the cliffs察and the pines of the mountains察 were
silent。 So they came up in their joy察and around them the lamps of the sea´
nymphs察Myriad fiery globes察swam heaving and panting察and rainbows察
Crimson察and azure察and emerald察were broken in star´showers察 lighting察
Far in the wine´dark depths of the crystal察the gardens of Nereus察Coral察
and sea´fan察and tangle察the blooms and the palms of the ocean。 So they
went on in their joy察 more white than the foam which they scattered察
Laughing and singing and tossing and twining察while察eager察the Tritons
Blinded with kisses their eyes察unreproved察and above them in worship
Fluttered the terns察and the sea´gulls swept past them on silvery pinions察
Echoing softly their laughter察around them the wantoning dolphins Sighed
as they plunged察full of love察and the great sea´horses which bore them
Curved up their crests in their pride to the delicate arms of their riders察
Pawing the spray into gems察till a fiery ra
