sucker mouth has fastened to             his side。     In another instant�察�from one lip�察�

a   concave   double       proboscis�察  �just   like   a   tapir's   ��another   instance   of   the 

repetition      of forms���察�has clasped him like a finger�察�and now begins the 

struggle�此     �but in vain。      He is being ;played; with such a fishing´ line as 

the skill of a Wilson or a Stoddart never could invent�察�a                   living line�察�with 

elasticity beyond that of   the   most delicate   fly´   rod�察 �which   follows   every 

lunge�察    �shortening     and   lengthening�察      �slipping     and   twining     round    every 

piece   of   gravel   and   stem   of   sea´   weed�察  �with   a   tiring   drag   such   as   no

The     victim   is  tired   now�察   �and    slowly�察   �and   yet  dexterously�察    �his  blind 

assailant is feeling and        shifting along his side�察�till he reaches one end of 

him�察�and then        the black lips expand�察�and slowly and surely the   curved 

finger     begins packing him end´foremost down into the gullet�察�where he 

sinks�察�inch by inch�察�till the swelling which marks his place is                 lost among 

the   coils�察  �and   he   is   probably   macerated   to   a   pulp   long  before   he   has 

reached the opposite extremity of his cave of doom。                     Once safe down�察�

the black murderer slowly contracts again into a                 knotted heap�察�and lies�察�

     There�察�we   must come away now�察�for the tide is over our ankles�察�but

and taking your finger for some bothering Annelid�察                 �who wants to nibble 

him�察  �is   defending   himself�察  �shooting   you�察  �as       naturalists   do   humming´ 

birds�察�with water。        Let him  rest in peace�察       �it will   cost you ten   minutes' 

hard work�察�and much dirt�察�to extract              him�察�but if you are fond of shells�察�

secure   one   or   two   of   those   beautiful   pink   and   straw´coloured   scallops

layers of their      lower valve with the roughnesses of the stone�察�destroying 

thereby      the   beautiful   form   which   belongs   to   their   race�察  �but   not   their 

delicate   colour。      There   are   a   few   more   bivalves   too�察  �adhering   to    the 

stone�察  �and   those   rare   ones�察  �and   two   or   three   delicate   Mangeliae      and 

Nassae ��21�� are trailing their graceful spires   up and down in                   search of 

food。     That little bright red and yellow pea�察�too�察�touch               it ´ the brilliant 

coloured   cloak   is   withdrawn�察 �and�察 �instead�察 �you         have   a   beautiful   ribbed 

pink cowry�察。�22�� our only European               representative of that grand tropical 

family。     Cast one wondering           glance�察�too�察�at the forest of zoophytes and 

corals�察�Lepraliae and         Flustrae�察�and those quaint blue stars�察�set in brown 

jelly�察  �which    are   no   zoophytes�察  �but   respectable   molluscs�察  �each   with   his 

well´ formed mouth and intestines�察。�23�� but combined in a peculiar form

of Communism�察�of which all one can say is�察�that one hopes they like                       it�察�

and that�察�at all events�察�they agree better than the heroes and                 heroines of 

Mr。 Hawthorne's ;Blithedale Romance。; 

     Now   away�察  �and   as   a   specimen   of   the   fertility   of   the  water´world�察�

look at this rough list of species�察。�24�� the greater part of which                   are on 

this very stone�察�and all of which you might obtain in an                 hour�察�would the 

rude    tide   wait   for   zoologists�此    �and    remember       that   the    number     of 

individuals      of  each    species   of   polype    must    be  counted      by   tens   of 

thousands�察  �and   also�察  �that�察  �by   searching   the   forest   of  sea´weeds   which 

covers the upper surface�察�we should probably obtain                 some twenty minute 

species more。 

     A  goodly   catalogue   this�察  �surely�察  �of   the   inhabitants   of   three   or four 

large stones�察�and yet how small a specimen of the                 multitudinous nations 

of the sea� �

     From the bare rocks above high´water mark�察�down to abysses deeper 

than ever plummet   sounded�察�is   life�察�everywhere  life�察�fauna  after               fauna�察�

and flora after flora�察�arranged in zones�察�according to the                amount of light 

and warmth which each species requires�察�and to the                   amount of pressure 

which they are able to endure。            The crevices of       the highest rocks�察�only 

sprinkled     with    salt  spray   in  spring´tides     and     high   gales�察  �have   their 

peculiar   little   univalves�察   �their   crisp  lichen´like     sea´weed�察  �in    myriads�察�

lower down�察�the region of the           Fuci ��bladder´weeds�� has its own tribes of 

periwinkles      and   limpets�察   �below     again�察  �about    the  neap´tide    mark�察   �the 

region   of   the   corallines   and Algae   furnishes   food   for
