instead of having like them a walking disc察it has a free open lower end察
with which I know not how it buries itself upright in the sand察with its
mouth just above the surface。 The figure on the left of the plate
represents a curious cluster of papillae which project from one side of
the mouth察and are the opening of the oviduct。 But his value consists察
not merely in his beauty though that察 really察 is not small察 but in his
belonging to what the long word´makers call an ;interosculant; group察
a party of genera and species which connect families scientifically far
apart察 filling up a fresh link in the great chain察 or rather the great
network察of zoological classification。 For here we have a simple察and察
as it were察crude form察of which察if we dared to indulge in reveries察we
might say that the Creative Mind realized it before either Actiniae or
Holothurians察and then went on to perfect the idea contained in it in two
different directions察 dividing it into two different families察 and making
on its model察by adding new organs察and taking away old ones察in one
direction the whole family of Actiniae sea´ anemones察 and in a quite
opposite one the Holothuriae察 those strange sea´cucumbers察 with their
mouth´fringe of feathery gills察 of which you shall see some anon。 Thus
there has been察 in the Creative Mind察 as it gave life to new species察 a
development of the idea on which older species were created察in order ´
we may fancy ´ that every mesh of the great net might gradually be
supplied察and there should be no gaps in the perfect variety of Nature's
forms。 This development is one which we must believe to be at least
possible察if we allow that a Mind presides over the universe察and not a
mere brute necessity察a Law absurd misnomer without a Lawgiver察and
to it strangely enough coinciding here and there with the Platonic
doctrine of Eternal Ideas existing in the Divine Mind all fresh inductive
discovery seems to point more and more。
Let me speak freely a few words on this important matter。 Geology
has disproved the old popular belief that the universe was brought into
being as it now exists by a single fiat。 We know that the work has been
gradual察that the earth

;In tracts of fluent heat began察 The seeming prey of cyclic storms察
The home of seeming random forms察Till察at the last察arose the man。;
And we know察also察that these forms察 seeming random; as they are察
have appeared according to a law which察 as far as we can judge察 has
been on the whole one of progress察 lower animals though we cannot
yet say察the lowest appearing first察and man察the highest mammal察 the
roof and crown of things察─one of the latest in the series。 We have no
more right察let it be observed察to say that man察the highest察appeared last察
than that the lowest appeared first。 It was probably so察in both cases察
but there is as yet no positive proof of either察 and as we know that
species of animals lower than those which already existed appeared
again and again during the various eras察so it is quite possible that they
may be appearing now察 and may appear hereafter此 and that for every
extinct Dodo or Moa察 a new species may be created察 to keep up the
equilibrium of the whole。 This is but a surmise此 but it may be wise察
perhaps察just now察to confess boldly察even to insist on察its possibility察lest
any should fancy察from our unwillingness to allow it察that there would be
ought in it察if proved察contrary to sound religion。
I am察 I must honestly confess察 more and more unable to perceive
anything which an orthodox Christian may not hold察 in those physical
theories of ;evolution察─which are gaining more and more the assent of
our best zoologists and botanists。 All that they ask us to believe is察that
;species; and ;families察─and indeed the whole of organic nature察have
gone through察and may still be going through察some such development
from a lowest germ察as we know that every living individual察from the
lowest zoophyte to man himself察 does actually go through。 They apply
to the whole of the living world察past察present察and future察the law which
is undeniably at work on each individual of it。 They may be wrong察or
they may be right此 but what is there in such a conception contrary to
any doctrine ´ at least of the Church of England拭 To say that this
cannot be true察that species cannot vary察because God察at the beginning察
created each thing ;according to its kind察─is really to beg the question察
which is ´ Does the idea of ;kind; include variability or not拭and if so察
how much variability拭 Now察 kind察─ or ;species察─ as we call it察 is

defined nowhere in the Bible。 What right have we to read our own
definition into the word拭 and that against the certain fact察 that some
;kinds; do vary察 and that widely察 mankind察 for instance察 and the
animals and plants which he domesticates。 Surely that latter fact
should be significant察to those who believe察as I do察that man was created
in the likeness of God。 For if man has the power察not only of making
plants and animals vary察 but of developing them into forms of higher
beauty and usefulness than their wild ancestors possessed察 why should
not the God in whose image he is made possess the same power拭 If the
old theological rule be true ´ ;There is nothing in man which was not
first in God; sin察 of course察 excluded ´ then why should not this
imperfect creative faculty in man be the very guarantee that God
possesses it in perfection拭
Such at least is the conclusion of one who察studying certain families
of plants察which indulge in the most fantastic varieties of shape and size察
and yet through all their vagaries retain ´ as do the Palms察the Orchids察
the Euphorbiaceae ´ one organ察 or form of organs察 peculiar and highly
specialized察yet constant throughout the whole of each family察has been
driven to the belief that each of these three families察 at least察 has
;sported off; from one common ancestor ´ one archetypal Palm察 one
archetypal Orchid察one archetypal Euphorbia察simple察it may be察in itself察
but endowed with infinite possibilities of new and complex beauty察to be
developed察 not in it察 but in its descendants。 He has asked himself察
sitting alone amid the boundless wealth of tropic forests察 whether even
then and there the great God might not be creating round him察slowly but
surely察new forms of beauty拭 If he chose to do it察could He not do it拭
That man found himself none the worse Christian for the thought。 He
has said ´ and must be allowed to say again察for he sees no reason to alter
his words ´ in speaking of the wonderful variety of forms in the
Euphorbiaceae察 from the weedy English Euphorbias察 the Dog's
Mercuries察 and the Box察 to the prickly´stemmed Scarlet Euphorbia of
Madagascar察 the succulent Cactus´like Euphorbias of the
