or seemingly simple察means察that the universe察as far as we could discern

it察 was one organization of the most simple means。 It was wonderful ´

or should have been ´ in our eyes察that a shower of rain should make the

grass grow察and that the grass should become flesh察and the flesh food

Holy Scripture察that without Him not a sparrow fell to the ground察and

that the very hairs of our head were all numbered察that the whole history

of the universe was made up察in fact察 of an infinite network of special

providences。 If察then察that should be true which a great naturalist writes察

'It may be metaphorically said that natural selection is daily and hourly

scrutinizing察 throughout the world察 every variation察 even the slightest察

rejecting that which is bad察 preserving and adding up all that is good察

silently and insensibly working察 whenever and wherever opportunity

offers察 at the improvement of each organic being察 in relation to its

organic and inorganic conditions of life' ´ if this察I say察were proved to

be true察 ought God's care and God's providence to seem less or more

magnificent in our eyes拭 Of old it was said by Him without whom

nothing is made ´ 'My Father worketh hitherto察and I work。' Shall we

quarrel with physical science察if she gives us evidence that those words

are true拭─

And ´ understand it well ´ the grand passage I have just quoted need

not be accused of substituting ;natural selection for God。; In any case

natural selection would be only the means or law by which God works察

as He does by other natural laws。 We do not substitute gravitation for

God察when we say that the planets are sustained in their orbits by the law

of gravitation。 The theory about natural selection may be untrue察 or

imperfect察as may the modern theories of the ;evolution and progress; of

organic forms此 let the man of science decide that。 But if true察 the

theories seem to me perfectly to agree with察 and may be perfectly

explained by察 the simple old belief which the Bible sets before us察of a

LIVING GOD此 not a mere past will察 such as the Koran sets forth察

creating once and for all察and then leaving the universe察to use Goethe's

simile察 to spin round his finger察─ nor again察 an ;all´pervading spirit察─

words which are mere contradictory jargon察concealing察 from those who

utter them察blank Materialism此 but One who works in all things which

have obeyed Him to will and to do of His good pleasure察 keeping His

abysmal and self´perfect purpose察yet altering the methods by which that

purpose is attained察from aeon to aeon察ay察from moment to moment察for

ever various察 yet for ever the same。 This great and yet most blessed

paradox of the Changeless God察who yet can say ;It repenteth me察─and

;Behold察I work a new thing on the earth察─is revealed no less by nature

them察 the handiwork察 in short察 of a living and loving Mind察 perfect in

His own eternity察 but stooping to work in time and space察 and there

rejoicing Himself in the work of His own hands察 and in His eternal

Sabbaths ceasing in rest ineffable察that He may look on that which He

hath made察and behold it is very good。

I speak察 of course察 under correction察 for this conclusion is

emphatically matter of induction察 and must be verified or modified by

ever´fresh facts此 but I meet with many a Christian passage in scientific

asserting the God of the Bible察 as Saint Paul says察 not to have left

Himself without witness察─in nature itself察 t
