                               THE WAGES

EARTH loves to gibber o'er her dross察 Her golden souls察to waste察

The cup she fills for her god´men Is a bitter cup to taste。

Who sees the gyves that bind mankind And strives to strike them

off Shall gain the hissing hate of fools察 Thorns察and the ingrate's scoff。

Who storms the moss´grown walls of eld And beats some falsehood

down Shall pass the pallid gates of death Sans laurel察love or crown察

For him who fain would teach the world The world holds hate in

fee For Socrates察the hemlock cup察 For Christ察Gethsemane。

goal I will storm the black bastions of Night I will tread where my

vision has trod察I will set in the darkness a light察 In the vastness察a god ─

As the forehead of Man grows broader察so do his creeds察And

his gods they are shaped in his image察and mirror his needs察And

he clothes them with thunders and beauty察 he clothes them with

music and fire察 Seeing not察 as he bows by their altars察 that he

worships his own desire察 And mixed with his trust there is terror察 and

mixed with his madness is ruth察And every man grovels in error察yet every

man glimpses a truth。

For all of the creeds are false察and all of the creeds are true察

And low at the shrines where my brothers bow察 there will I bow察

too察

For no form of a god察and no fashion Man has made in his desperate

passion But is worthy some worship of mine察Not too hot with a gross

belief察 Nor yet too cold with pride察 I will bow me down where my

brothers bow察 Humblebut open´eyed

UNREST A FIERCE unrest seethes at the core Of all existing

things此It was the eager wish to soar That gave the gods their wings。

From what flat wastes of cosmic slime察 And stung by what quick

fire察Sunward the restless races climb Men risen out of mire

There throbs through all the worlds that are This heart´beat hot and

strong察And shaken systems察star by star察 Awake and glow in song。

But for the urge of this unrest These joyous spheres were mute察But

for the rebel in his breast Had man remained a brute。

When baffled lips demanded speech察 Speech trembled into birth

One day the lyric word shall reach From earth to laughing earth

When man's dim eyes demanded light The light he sought was

born His wish察 a Titan察 scaled the height And flung him back the

morn

From deed to dream察 from dream to deed察 From daring hope to

hope察The restless wish察the instant need察 Still lashed him up the slope

     。 。 。 。 。 。

I sing no governed firmament察 Cold察 ordered察 regular I sing the

stinging discontent That leaps from star to star

                         THE PILTDOWN SKULL

WHAT was his life察 back yonder In the dusk where time began察

This beast uncouth with the jaw of an ape And the eye and brain of a

man拭Work察and the wooing of woman察 Fight察and the lust of fight察

Play察and the blind beginnings Of an Art that groped for light拭

In the wonder of redder mornings察 By the beauty of brighter seas察

Did he stand察 the world's first thinker察Scorning his clan's decrees拭

Seeking察with baffled eyes察In the dumb察inscrutable skies察A name for the

greater glory That only the dreamer sees拭

One day察when the afterglows察 Like quick and sentient things察

With a rush of their vast察wild wings察Rose out of the shaken ocean

As great birds rise from the sod察Did the shock of their sudden splendor

Stir him and startle and thrill him察Grip him and shake him and fill him

With a sense as of heights untrod拭Did he tremble with hope and vision察

And grasp at a hint of God拭

London stands where the mammoth Caked shag flanks with slime

And what are our lives that inherit The treasures of all time拭Work察and

the wooing of woman察 Fight察and the lust of fight察A little play and too

much toil。 With an Art that gropes for light察 And now and then a

dreamer察 Rapt察from his lonely sod Looks up and is thrilled and startled

With a fleeting sense of God
