With a fleeting sense of God

       THE SEEKER

THE creeds he wrought of dream and thought Fall from him at the

touch of life察 His old gods fail him in the strife Withdrawn察 the

heavens he sought

Vanished察 the miracles that led察 The cloud at noon察 the flame at

night察The vision that he wing'd and sped Falls backward察baffled察from

the height察

Yet in the wreck of these he stands Upheld by something grim and

strong察 Some stubborn instinct lifts a song And nerves him察heart and

hands此

He does not dare to call it hope察 It is not aught that seeks reward

Nor faith察 that up some sunward slope Runs aureoled to meet its

                                             35

lord察

It touches something elder far Than faith or creed or thought in man察

It was ere yet these lived and ran Like light from star to star察

It touches that stark察 primal need That from unpeopled voids and

vast Fashioned the first crude察childish creed察 And still shall fashion察

till the last

For one word is the tale of men此 They fling their icons to the sod察

And having trampled down a god They seek a god again

Stripped of his creeds inherited察 Bereft of all his sires held true察

Amid the wreck of visions dead He thrills at touch of visions new。 。 。 。

He wings another Dream for flight。 。 。 。 He seeks beyond the

outmost dawn A god he set there 。 。 。 and察anon察Drags that god from the

height

     。 。 。 。 。 。

But aye from ruined faiths and old That droop and die察fall bruised

seeds察 And when new flowers and faiths unfold They're lovelier

flowers察they're kindlier creeds。

                                THE AWAKENING

THE steam察 the reek察 the fume察 of prayer Blown outward for a

million years察 Becomes a mist between the spheres察 And waking

Sentience struggles there。

Prayer still creates the boon we pray察 And gods we've hoped for察

from those hopes Will gain sufficient form one day And in full

godhood storm the slopes Where ancient Chaos察stark and gray察Already

trembles for his sway。

When that the restless worlds would fly Their wish created rapid

wings察 But not till aeons had passed by With dower of many idler

things察And when dumb flesh demanded speech Speech struggled to the

lips at last察 Now the unpeopled Void察and vast察

Clean to that uttermost blank beach Whereto the boldest thought may

reach That voyages from the vaguest past Dim realm and ultimate

of space Is vexed and troubled察stirs and shakes察In prescience of a god

that wakes察 Born of man's wish to see God's face

                                               36

                                     DREAMS & DUST

The endless察 groping察 dumb desires察 The climbing incense thick

and sweet察The lovely purpose that aspires察 The wraiths of vapor wing'd

and fleet That rise and run with eager feet Forth from a myriad altar

fires此 All these become a mist that fills The vales and chasms nebular察

A shaping Soul that moves and thrills The wastes between red star and

star

                               A SONG OF MEN

OUT of the soil and the slime察Reeking察they climb察

Out of the muck and the mire察Rank察they aspire察

Filthy with murder and mud察 Black with shed blood察 Lust and

passion and clay Dying察they slay察

Stirred by vague hints of a goal察Seeking a soul

Groping through terror and night Up to the light此

Life in the dust and the clod Sensing a God察

Flushed of the glamor and gleam Caught from a dream察

Stained of the struggle and toil察Stained of the soil察

Ally of God in the end Helper and friend

Hero and prophet and priest Out of the beast

                          THE NOBLER LESSON

CHRIST was of virgin birth察 and察 being slain察The creedists say察 He

rose from death again。 Oh察futile age´long talk of death and birth His

life察that is the one thing wonder´worth察Not how He came察but how He

lived on earth。 For if gods stoop察and with quaint jugglery Mock nature's

laws察 how shall that profit thee拭The nobler lesson is that mortals can

Grow godlike through this baffled front of man

                                      AT LAST

EACH race has died and lived and fought for the ;true; gods of

that poor race察Unconsciously察divinest thought of each race gild´ ing

its god's face。 And every race that lives and dies shall make itself

                                             37

some other gods察 Shall build察 with mingled truth and lies察 new icons

from the world´old clods。 Through all the tangled creeds and dreams and

shifting shibboleths men hold The false´and´true察 inwoven察 gleams此 a

matted mass of dross and gold。 Prove察then察thy gods in thine own

soul察all others' gods察for thee察are vain察Nor swerved be察struggling

for the goal察by bribe of joy nor threat of pain。

As skulls grow broader察so do faiths察as old tongues die察old gods

die察too察

And only ghosts of gods and wraiths may meet the backward´

gazer's view。 Where察 where the faiths of yesterday拭 Ah察 whither

vanished察 whither gone拭 Say察 what Apollos drive to´day adown the

flaming slopes of dawn拭 Oh察 does the blank past hide from view

forgotten Christs察to be reborn察The future tremble where some new

Messiah´ Memnon sings the morn拭Of all the worlds察say any earth察

like dust wind´ harried to and fro察 Shall give the next Prometheus

birth察but say at lastyou do not know。

How should I know what dawn may gleam beyond the gates of

darkness there拭 Which god of all the gods men dream拭 Why

should I whip myself to care拭Whichever over all hath place hath shaped

and made me what I am察Hath made me strong to front his face察to

dare to question though he damn。

Perhaps to cringe and cower and bring a shrine a forced and

faithless faith Is far more futile than to fling your laughter in the face

of Death。 For writhe or whirl in dervish rout察they are not flattered

there on high察Or sham belief to hide a doubtno gods are mine that

love a lie Nor gods that beg belief on earth with portents that some

seer foretells Is life itself not wonder´worth that we must cry for

miracles拭 Is it not strange enough we breathe拭 Does every´ thing

not God reveal拭Or must we ever weave and wreathe some creed that

shall his face conceal拭 Some creed of which its prophets cry it holds

the secret's all´in´all此Some creed which ever bye and bye doth crumble察

totter察 to its fall Say any dream of all the dreams that drift and

darkle察 glint and glow察 Holds most of truth within its gleams察 but say

at lastyou do not know。

                                    DREAMS & DUST

Oh察say the soul察from star to star察with victory wing'd察leap on

through space And scale the bastioned nights that bar the secret's

inner dwelling´place察 Or say it ever roam dim glades where pallid

wraiths of long´dead moons Flit like blown feathers through the shades察

borne on the breath of sobbing tunes此Say any tide of any time察of all

the tides that ebb and flow察Shall buoy us on toward any clime察but

sayat lastyou do not know
