or four poor women sitting at a door察in the sun察talking about the things of God察and being now willing to hear them discourse察I drew near to hear what they said察 for I was now a brisk talker also myself察in the matters of religion察but I may say察I HEARD BUT UNDERSTOOD NOT察for they were far above察out of my reach。 Their talk was about a new birth察the work of God on their hearts察also how they were convinced of their miserable state by nature察they talked how God had visited their souls with His love in the Lord Jesus察and with what words and promises they had been refreshed察comforted察and supported察against the temptations of the devil此 moreover察they reasoned of the suggestions and temptations of Satan in particular察and told to each other察by which they had been afflicted and how they were borne up under his assaults。 They also discoursed of their own wretchedness of heart察and of their unbelief察and did contemn察 slight and abhor their own righteousness察as filthy察and insufficient to do them any good。
。 And察methought察they spake as if joy did make them speak察they spake with such pleasantness of scripture language察and with such appearance of grace in all they said察that they were to me察as if they had found a new world察as if they were PEOPLE THAT DWELT ALONE察AND WERE NOT TO BE RECKONED AMONG THEIR NEIGHBOURS。 Numb。 xxiii。 9。
。 At this I felt my own heart began to shake察and mistrust my condition to be naught察for I saw that in all my thoughts about religion and salvation察the new´birth did never enter into my mind察 neither knew I the comfort of the word and promise察nor the deceitfulness and treachery of my own wicked heart。 As for secret thoughts察I took no notice of them察neither did I understand what Satan's temptations were察nor how they were to be withstood察and resisted察etc。
。 Thus察therefore察when I had heard and considered what they said察I left them察and went about my employment again察but their talk and discourse went with me察also my heart would tarry with them察for I was greatly affected with their words察both because by them I was convinced that I wanted the true tokens of a truly godly man察and also because by them I was convinced of the happy and blessed condition of him that was such a one。
。 Therefore I should often make it my business to be going again and again into the company of these poor people察for I could not stay away察and the more I went amongst them察the more I did question my condition察and as I still do remember察presently I found two things within me察at which I did sometimes marvel especially considering what a blind察ignorant察sordid and ungodly wretch but just before I was。 The one was a very great softness and tenderness of heart察which caused me to fall under the conviction of what by scripture they asserted察and the other was a great bending in my mind察to a continual meditating on it察and on all other good things察which at any time I heard or read of。
。 By these things my mind was now so turned察that it lay like an horse´leech at the vein察still crying out察GIVE察GIVE察Prov。 xxx。 15察yea察it was so fixed on eternity察and on the things about the kingdom of heaven that is察so far as I knew察though as yet察God knows察I knew but little察that neither pleasures察nor profits察nor persuasions察nor threats察could loose it察or make it let go its hold察and though I may speak it with shame察yet it is in very deed察 a certain truth察it would then have been as difficult for me to have taken my mind from heaven to earth察as I have found it often since察to get again from earth to heaven。
。 One thing I may not omit此 There was a young man in our town察 to whom my heart before was knit察more than to any other察but he being a most wicked creature for cursing察and swearing察and whoreing察I now shook him off察and forsook his company察but about a quarter of a year after I had left him察I met him in a certain lane察and asked him how he did此 he察after his old swearing and mad way察answered察he was well。 But察Harry察said I察WHY DO YOU CURSE AND SWEAR THUS拭 WHAT WILL BECOME OF YOU察IF YOU DIE IN THIS CONDITION拭 He answered me in a great chafe察WHAT WOULD THE DEVIL DO FOR COMPANY察IF IT WERE NOT FOR SUCH AS I AM
。 About this time I met with some Ranters' books察that were put forth by some of our countrymen察which books were also highly in esteem by several old professors察some of these I read察but was not able to make any judgment about them察wherefore as I read in them察 and thought upon them seeing myself unable to judge察I would betake myself to hearty prayer in this manner。 O LORD察I AM A FOOL察AND NOT ABLE TO KNOW THE TRUTH FROM ERROR此 LORD察LEAVE ME NOT TO MY OWN BLINDNESS察EITHER TO APPROVE OF OR CONDEMN THIS DOCTRINE察IF IT BE OF GOD察LET ME NOT DESPISE IT察IF IT BE OF THE DEVIL察LET ME NOT EMBRACE IT。 LORD察I LAY MY SOUL IN THIS MATTER ONLY AT THY FOOT察LET ME NOT BE DECEIVED察I HUMBLY BESEECH THEE。 I had one religious intimate companion all this while察and that was the poor man I spoke of before察but about this time察he also turned a most devilish Ranter察and gave himself up to all manner of filthiness察especially uncleanness此 he would also deny that there was a God察angel察or spirit察and would laugh at all exhortations to sobriety察when I laboured to rebuke his wickedness he would laugh the more察and pretend that he had gone through all religions察and could never light on the right till now。 He told me also察that in a little time I should see all professors turn to the ways of the Ranters。 Wherefore察abominating those cursed principles察I left his company forthwith察and became to him as great a stranger察as I had been before a familiar。
。 Neither was this man only a temptation to me察but my calling lying in the country察I happened to light into several people's company察who though strict in religion formerly察yet were also swept away by these Ranters。 These would also talk with me of their ways察and condemn me as legal and dark察pretending that they only had attained to perfection察that could do what they would and not sin。 Oh these temptations were suitable to my flesh察I being but a young man and my nature in its prime察but God察who had察as I hoped察designed me for better things察kept me in the fear of His name察and did not suffer me to accept such cursed principles。 And blessed be God察Who put it into my heart to cry to Him to be kept and directed察still distrusting my own wisdom察for I have since seen even the effects of that prayer察in His preserving me察not only from Ranting errors察but from those also that have sprung up since。 The Bible was precious to me in those days。
。 And now methought察I began to look into the Bible with new eyes察and read as I never did before察and especially the epistles of the apostle St Paul were sweet and pleasant to me察and indeed I was then never out of the Bible察either by reading or meditation察 still crying out to God察that I might know the truth察and way to heaven and glory。
。 And as I went on and read察I lighted upon that passage察TO ONE IS GIVEN察BY THE SPIRIT察THE WORD OF WISDOM察TO ANOTHER THE WORD KNOWLEDGE BY THE SAME SPIRIT察AND TO ANOTHER FAITH察etc。 1 Cor。 xii。 And though察as I have since seen察that by this scripture the Holy Ghost intends察in special察things extraordinary察yet on me it did then fasten with conviction察that I did want things ordinary察 even that understanding and wisdom that other Christians had。 On this word I mused察and could not tell what to do察especially this word 'Faith' put me to it察for I could not help it察but sometimes must question察whether I had any faith察or no察but I was loath to conclude察I had no faith察for if I do so察thought I察then I shall count myself a very cast´away indeed。
。 No察said I察with myself察though I am convinced that I am an ignorant sot察and that I want those blessed gifts of knowledge and understanding that other people have察yet at a venture I will conclude察I am not altogether faithless察though I know not what faith is察for it was shewn me察and that too as I have seen since by Satan察that those who conclude themselves in a faithless state察 have neither rest nor quiet in their souls察and I was loath to fall quite into despair。
。 Wherefore by this suggestion I was察for a while察made afraid to see my want of faith察but God would not suffer me thus to undo and destroy my soul察but did continually察against this my sad and blind conclusion察create still within me such suppositions察 insomuch that I could not rest content察until I did now come to some certain knowledge察whether I had faith or no察this always running in my mind察BUT HOW IF YOU WANT FAITH INDEED拭 BUT HOW CAN YOU TELL YOU HAVE FAITH拭 And besides察I saw for certain察if I had not察I was sure to perish for ever。
。 So that though I endeavoured at the first to look over the business of Faith察yet in a little time察I better considering the matter察was willing to put myself upon the trial whether I had faith or no。 But alas察poor wretch so ignorant and brutish was I察 that I knew not to this day no more how to do
