 returned with great delight。

。 But the same day察as I was in the midst of a game of Cat察and having struck it one blow from the hole察just as I was about to strike it the second time察a voice did suddenly dart from heaven into my soul察which said察WILT THOU LEAVE THY SINS AND GO TO HEAVEN察OR HAVE THY SINS AND GO TO HELL拭 At this I was put to an exceeding maze察wherefore leaving my cat upon the ground察I looked up to heaven察and was察as if I had察with the eyes of my understanding察seen the Lord Jesus looking down upon me察as being very hotly displeased with me察and as if He did severely threaten me with some grievous punishment for these and other ungodly practices。

。 I had no sooner thus conceived in my mind察but察suddenly察this conclusion was fastened on my spirit for the former hint did set my sins again before my face察THAT I HAD BEEN A GREAT AND GRIEVOUS SINNER察AND THAT IT WAS NOW TOO LATE FOR ME TO LOOK AFTER HEAVEN察 FOR CHRIST WOULD NOT FORGIVE ME察NOR PARDON MY TRANSGRESSIONS。 Then I fell to musing on this also察and while I was thinking of it察 and fearing lest it should be so察I felt my heart sink in despair察 concluding it was too late察and therefore I resolved in my mind I would go on in sin此 for察thought I察if the case be thus察my state is surely miserable察miserable if I leave my sins察and but miserable if I follow them察I can but be damned察and if I must be so察I had as good be damned for many sins察as be damned for few。

。 Thus I stood in the midst of my play察before all that then were present此 but yet I told them nothing此 but I say察having made this conclusion察I returned desperately to my sport again察and I well remember察that presently this kind of despair did so possess my soul察that I was persuaded I could never attain to other comfort than what I should get in sin察for heaven was gone already察so that on that I must not think察wherefore I found within me great desire to take my fill of sin察still studying what sin was yet to be committed察that I might taste the sweetness of it察and I made as much haste as I could to fill my belly with its delicates察lest I should die before I had my desire察for that I feared greatly。 In these things察I protest before God察I lye not察neither do I feign this form of speech察these were really察strongly察and with all my heart察my desires此 THE GOOD LORD察WHOSE MERCY IS UNSEARCHABLE察 FORGIVE ME MY TRANSGRESSIONS

。 And I am very confident察that this temptation of the devil is more usual among poor creatures察than many are aware of察even to over´run the spirits with a scurvy and seared frame of heart察and benumbing of conscience察which frame he stilly and slily supplieth with such despair察that察though not much guilt attendeth souls察yet they continually have a secret conclusion within them察that there is no hope for them察FOR THEY HAVE LOVED SINS察THEREFORE AFTER THEM THEY WILL GO。 Jer。 ii。 25察and xviii。 12。

。 Now therefore I went on in sin with great greediness of mind察 still grudging that I could not be so satisfied with it察as I would。 This did continue with me about a month察or more察but one day察as I was standing at a neighbour's shop window察and there cursing and swearing察and playing the madman察after my wonted manner察there sate within察the woman of the house察and heard me察 who察though she also was a very loose and ungodly wretch察yet protested that I swore and cursed at that most fearful rate察that she was made to tremble to hear me察and told me further察THAT I WAS THE UNGODLIEST FELLOW FOR SWEARING察THAT SHE EVER HEARD IN ALL HER LIFE察AND THAT I察BY THUS DOING察WAS ABLE TO SPOIL ALL THE YOUTH IN THE WHOLE TOWN察IF THEY COME BUT IN MY COMPANY。

。 At this reproof I was silenced察and put to secret shame察and that too察as I thought察before the God of heaven察wherefore察while I stood there察and hanging down my head察I wished with all my heart that I might be a little child again察that my father might learn me to speak without this wicked way of swearing察for察thought I察I am so accustomed to it察that it is in vain for me to think of a reformation察for I thought it could never be。

。 But how it came to pass察I know not察I did from this time forward察so leave my swearing察that it was a great wonder to myself to observe it察and whereas before I knew not how to speak unless I put an oath before察and another behind察to make my words have authority察now I could察without it察speak better察and with more pleasantness than ever I could before。 All this while I knew not Jesus Christ察neither did I leave my sports and plays。

。 But quickly after this察I fell into company with one poor man that made profession of religion察who察as I then thought察did talk pleasantly of the scriptures察and of the matters of religion察 wherefore falling into some love and liking to what he said察I betook me to my Bible察and began to take great pleasure in reading察 but especially with the historical part thereof察for as for Paul's Epistles察and such like scriptures察I could not away with them察 being as yet ignorant察either of the corruptions of my nature察or of the want and worth of Jesus Christ to save me。

。 Wherefore I fell to some outward reformation both in my words and life察and did set the commandments before me for my way to heaven察which commandments I also did strive to keep察and察as I thought察did keep them pretty well sometimes察and then I should have comfort察yet now and then should break one察and so afflict my conscience察but then I should repent察and say察I was sorry for it察 and promise God to do better next time察and there get help again察 for then I thought I pleased God as well as any man in ENGLAND。

。 Thus I continued about a year察all which time our neighbours did take me to be a very godly man察a new and religious man察and did marvel much to see such a great and famous alteration in my life and manners察and indeed so it was察though yet I knew not Christ察nor grace察nor faith察nor hope察for察as I have well seen since察had I then died察my state had been most fearful。

。 But察I say察my neighbours were amazed at this my great conversion察from prodigious profaneness察to something like a moral life察and truly察so they well might察for this my conversion was as great察as for Tom of Bethlehem to become a sober man。 Now therefore they began to praise察to commend察and to speak well of me察both to my face察and behind my back。 Now I was察as they said察 become godly察now I was become a right honest man。 But oh when I understood these were their words and opinions of me察it pleased me mighty well。 For察though as yet I was nothing but a poor painted hypocrite察yet察I loved to be talked of as one that was truly godly。 I was proud of my godliness察and indeed察I did all I did察 either to be seen of察or to be well spoken of察by men此 and thus I continued for about a twelve´month察or more。

。 Now you must know察that察before this察I had taken much delight in ringing察but my CONSCIENCE beginning to be tender察I thought such PRACTICE was but vain察and therefore forced myself to leave it察yet my mind hankered察wherefore I would go to the steeple´ house察and look on察though I durst not ring此 but I thought this did not become religion neither察yet I forced myself察and would look on still察but quickly after察I began to think察HOW IF ONE OF THE BELLS SHOULD FALL拭 Then I chose to stand under a main beam察 that lay overthwart the steeple察from side to side察thinking here I might stand sure察but then I should think again察should the bell fall with a swing察it might first hit the wall察and then察 rebounding upon me察might kill me for all this beam察this made me stand in the steeple´door察and now察thought I察I am safe enough察 for if the bell should now fall察I can slip out behind these thick walls察and so be preserved notwithstanding。

。 So after this I would yet go to see them ring察but would not go any farther than the steeple´door察but then it came into my head察how if the steeple itself should fall拭 And this thought it may for aught I know when I stood and looked on察did continually so shake my mind察that I durst not stand at the steeple´door any longer察but was forced to flee察for fear the steeple should fall upon my head。

。 Another thing was察my dancing察I was a full year before I could quite leave that察but all this while察when I thought I kept this or that commandment察or did察by word or deed察anything that I thought was good察I had great peace in my conscience察and should think with myself察God cannot choose but be now pleased with me察 yea察to relate it in mine own way察I thought no man in ENGLAND could please God better than I。

。 But poor wretch as I was I was all this while ignorant of Jesus Christ察and going about to establish my own righteousness察 and had perished therein察had not God in mercy showed me more of my state by nature。

。 But upon a day察the good providence of God called me to BEDFORD察to work on my calling察and in one of the streets of that town察I came where there were three or four poor women sitting at a door察in the sun察talking about the things of God察and being now
