For a very simple object cannot be known in part察it must either be known
altogether or not at all。
64А 。1 Secondly察it follows that if a complex object be divided by
thought into a number of simple component parts察and if each be regarded
separately察 all confusion will disappear。 2 Thirdly察 it follows that
fiction cannot be simple察 but is made up of the blending of several
confused ideas of diverse objects or actions existent in nature察or rather is
composed of attention directed to all such ideas at once察 。64bА and
unaccompanied by any mental assent。 643 Now a fiction that was
simple would be clear and distinct察 and therefore true察 also a fiction
composed only of distinct ideas would be clear and distinct察and therefore
true。 4 For instance察 when we know the nature of the circle and the
square察it is impossible for us to blend together these two figures察and to
hypothesize a square circle察any more than a square soul察or things of that
kind。
65А。1 Let us shortly come to our conclusion察and again repeat that
we need have no fear of confusing with true ideas that which is only a
fiction。 2 As for the first sort of fiction of which we have already
spoken察when a thing is clearly conceived察we saw that if the existence of a
that thing is in itself an eternal trut fiction can have no part in it察but if the
existence of the conceived be not an eternal truth察 we have only to be
careful such existence be compared to the thing's essence察 and to
consider the order of nature。 643 As for the second sort of fiction察which

we stated to be the result of simultaneously directing the attention察without
the assent of the intellect察to different confused ideas representing different
things and actions existing in nature察 we have seen that an absolutely
simple thing cannot be feigned察 but must be understood察 and that a
complex thing is in the same case if we regard separately the simple parts
whereof it is composed察 we shall not even be able to hypothesize any
untrue action concerning such objects察for we shall be obliged to consider
at the same time the causes and manner of such action。
66А 。1 These matters being thus understood察 let us pass on to
consider the false idea察observing the objects with which it is concerned察
and the means of guarding ourselves from falling into false perceptions。
2 Neither of these tasks will present much difficulty察 after our inquiry
concerning fictitious ideas。 3 The false idea only differs from the
fictitious idea in the fact of implying a mental assent ´ that is察as we have
already remarked察 while the representations are occurring察 there are no
causes present to us察wherefrom察as in fiction察we can conclude that such
representations do not arise from external objects此in fact察it is much the
same as dreaming with our eyes open察or while awake。 674 Thus察 a
false idea is concerned with察or to speak more correctly is attributable to察
the existence of a thing whereof the essence is known察or the essence itself察
in the same way as a fictitious idea。
67А 。1 If attributable to the existence of the thing察it is corrected in
the same way as a fictitious idea under similar circumstances。 2 If
attributable to the essence察it is likewise corrected in the same way as a
fictitious idea。 673 For if the nature of the thing known implies
necessary existence察 we cannot possible be in error with regard to its
existence察 but if the nature of the thing be not an eternal truth察 like its
essence察 but contrariwise the necessity or impossibility of its existence
depends on external causes察then we must follow the same course as we
adopted in the of fiction察for it is corrected in the same manner。
68А 。1 As for false ideas concerned with essences察 or even with
actions察 such perceptions are necessarily always confused察 being
compounded of different confused perceptions of things existing in nature察
as察for instance察when men are persuaded that deities are present in woods察

in statues察 in brute beasts察 and the like察 that there are bodies which察 by
their composition alone察 give rise to intellect察 that corpses reason察 walk
about察 and speak察 that God is deceived察 and so on。 682 But ideas
which are clear and distinct can never be false此for ideas of things clearly
and distinctly conceived are either very simple themselves察 or are
compounded from very simple ideas察that is察are deduced therefrom。 3
The impossibility of a very simple idea being false is evident to everyone
who understands the nature of truth or understanding and of falsehood。
69А 。1 As regards that which constitutes the reality of truth察 it is
certain that a true idea is distinguished from a false one察not so much by its
extrinsic object as by its intrinsic nature。 2 If an architect conceives a
building properly constructed察 though such a building may never have
existed察 and amy never exist察 nevertheless the idea is true察 and the idea
remains the same察whether it be put into execution or not。 693 On the
other hand察 if anyone asserts察 for instance察 that Peter exists察 without
knowing whether Peter really exists or not察 the assertion察 as far as its
asserter is concerned察is false察or not true察even though Peter actually does
exist。 4 The assertion that Peter exists is true only with regard to him
who knows for certain that Peter does exist。
70А 。1 Whence it follows that there is in ideas something real察
whereby the true are distinguished from the false。 2 This reality must
be inquired into察if we are to find the best standard of truth we have said
that we ought to determine our thoughts by the given standard of a true
idea察and that method is reflective knowledge察and to know the properties
of our understanding。 703 Neither must we say that the difference
between true and false arises from the fact察that true knowledge consists in
knowing things through their primary causes察wherein it is totally different
from false knowledge察as I have just explained it此for thought is said to be
true察if it involves subjectively the essence of any principle which has no
cause察and is known through itself and in itself。
71А 。1 Wherefore the reality forma of true thought must exist in
the thought itself察 without reference to other thoughts察 it does not
acknowledge the object as its cause察but must depend on the actual power
and nature of the understanding。 2 For察 if we suppose that the

understanding has perceived some new entity which has never existed察as
some conceive the understanding of God before He created thing a
perception which certainly could not arise any object察 and has
legitimately deduced other thoughts from said perception察 all such
thoughts would be true察without being determined by any external object察
they would depend solely on the power and nature of the understanding。
713 Thus察that which constitutes the reality of a true thought must be
sought in the thought itself察 and deduced from the nature of the
understanding。
72А 。1 In order to pursue our investigation察 let us confront
ourselves with some true idea察 whose object we know for
