 where land察stocks察debentures察and merchandise察and everything that has an existence in Nature察is bought察sold察and transferred from one to another察and many things contracted for察that subsists only in the imagination of the parties。

The public buildings in this ward are察the Royal Exchange察and the churches of St。 Peter and St。 Michael。

The Royal Exchange is situated on the north side of Cornhill察about the middle of the street察forming an oblong open square察the inside whereof is a hundred and forty´four feet in length from east to west察and a hundred and seventeen in breadth from north to south察the area sixty´one square poles察on every side whereof is a noble piazza or cloister察consisting of twenty´eight columns and arches that support the galleries above。

The length of the building on the outside is two hundred and three feet察the breadth a hundred and seventy´one察and the height fifty´ six。  On the front towards Cornhill also is a noble piazza察consisting of ten pillars察and another on the opposite side next Threadneedle Street察of as many察and in the middle of each a magnificent gate。  Over the Cornhill gate is a beautiful tower察a hundred and seventy´eight feet high察furnished with twelve small bells for chimes察and underneath the piazzas are capacious cellars察which serve for warehouses。

The whole building is of Portland stone察rustic work察above the arches the inward piazza is an entablament察with fine enrichments察and on the cornice a range of pilasters察within entablature察and a spacious compass pediment in the middle of the corners of each of the four sides。  Under the pediment on the north side are the king's arms察on the south those of the City察and on the east the arms of Sir Thomas Gresham。  And under the pediment on the west side the arms of the Company of Mercers察with their respective enrichments。 The intercolumns of the upper range are twenty´four niches察nineteen of which are filled with the statues of the kings and queens regent of England察standing erect with their robes and regalia察except that of King James II。 and King George II。察which are habited like the Caesars。

On the south side are seven niches察of which four are filled察viz。此

1。  The most easterly figure察which has this inscription in gold letters察Edvardus Primus Rex察Anno Dom。 1272。  2。  Westward察Edvardus III。 Rex察Anno Dom。 1329。  3。  Henricus V。 Rex察Anno Domini 1412。  4。  Henricus VI。 Rex察Anno Domini 1422。

On the west side five niches察four of which are filled察viz。此

1。  Under the most southerly figures is subscribed in gold letters察Edvardus IV。 Rex察Anno Domini 1460。  2。 Northward the crown pendent over his head Edvardus V。 Rex察Anno Domini 1483。  3。 Henricus VII。 Rex察Anno Domini 1487。  4。 Henricus VIII。 Rex察Anno Domini 1508。

On the north side seven niches are filled察viz。此

On the east side five niches察one of which is vacant察the other filled察viz。此

1。 The most northerly contains two statues察viz。察of King William and Queen Mary察subscribed Gulielmus III。 Rex察& Maria II。 Regina察A。D。  1688。  S。 P。 Q。  Londin' Optim Principibus察P。 C。 1695。  2。 Anna Regina Dei Gratia Mag。 Britan' Franciae & Hiberniae察1701。  3。 George I。 inscribed Georgius D。 G。 Magnae Britan' Franciae & Hiberniae Rex察Anno Dom。 1714。  S。P。Q。L。  4。  Southerly the statue of King George II。 in the habiliment of a Caesar察wreathed on the head察and a battoon or truncheon in his hand察little differing from that of Charles II。 in the centre of the area察only in looking northward察inscribed Georgius II。 D。 G。 Mag。 Brit。 Fra。 & Hib。 Rex察Anno Dom。 1727。  S。P。Q。L。

On the four sides of the piazza within the Exchange are twenty´eight niches察which are all vacant yet察except one near the north´west angle察where is the figure of Sir Thomas Gresham。  The piazza itself is paved with black and white marble察and the court察or area察pitched with pebbles察in the middle whereof is the statue of King Charles II。 in a Roman habit察with a battoon in his hand察erected on a marble pedestal察about eight feet high and looking southward察on which side of the pedestal察under an imperial crown察wings察trumpet of fame察sceptre and sword察palm branches察&c。察are these words inscribed察viz。此

Carolo II。 Caesari Britannico察Patriae Patri察Regum Optimo Clementissimo Augustissimo察Generis Humani Deliciis察Utriusq察Fortunae Victori察Pacis Europae Arbitro察Marium Domino察ac Vindici Societatis Mercatorum Adventur' Angliae察quae per CCCC jam prope Annos Regia benignitate floret察Fidei Intemeratae & Gratitudinis aeternae hoc Testimonium venerabunda posuit察Anno Salutis Humanae 1684。

On the west side of the pedestal is neatly cut in relievo the figure of a Cupid reposing his right hand on a shield containing the arms of England and France quartered察and in his left hand a rose。

On the north side are the arms of Ireland on a shield察supported by a Cupid。

On the east side the arms of Scotland察with a Cupid holding a thistle all in relievo。

The inner piazza and court are divided into several stations察or walks察where the merchants of the respective nations察and those who have business with them察assemble distinctly察so that any merchant or commander of a vessel is readily found察if it be known to what country he trades。  The several walks are described in the following ground´plot of the Exchange此

Near the south gate is a spacious staircase察and near the north gate another察that lead up to the galleries察on each side whereof are shops for milliners and other trades察to the number of near two hundred察which brought in a good revenue at first察nothing being thought fashionable that was not purchased there察but the milliners are now dispersed all over the town察and the shops in the Exchange almost deserted。

8。  Langbourn Ward察so called of a bourne察or brook察that had its source in it察and run down Fenchurch Street察contains these principal streets此 part of Lombard Street察part of Fenchurch Street察part of Lime Street察and part of Gracechurch Street察with part of the courts察lanes察and alleys in them察particularly White Hart Court察Exchange Alley察Sherbourne Lane察Abchurch Lane察St。 Nicholas Lane察Mark Lane察Mincing Lane察Rood Lane察Cullum Court察Philpot Lane察and Braben Court。

The public buildings in this ward are察the Post Office察Ironmongers' Hall察Pewterers' Hall察the churches of Allhallows察Lombard Street察St。 Edmund's察Lombard Street察St。 Mary Woolnoth察St。 Dionis Backchurch察and St。 Allhallows Staining。
