and being kind to them察he went on to be more cruel than ever此 for he

shut up his fair daughter Danae in a cavern underground察 lined with

brass察 that no one might come near her。 So he fancied himself more

cunning than the Gods此 but you will see presently whether he was able

to escape them。

Now it came to pass that in time Danae bore a son察 so beautiful a

babe that any but King Acrisius would have had pity on it。 But he had

no pity察for he took Danae and her babe down to the seashore察and put

them into a great chest and thrust them out to sea察for the winds and the

waves to carry them whithersoever they would。

The north´west wind blew freshly out of the blue mountains察 and

down the pleasant vale of Argos察and away and out to sea。 And away

and out to sea before it floated the mother and her babe察while all who

watched them wept察save that cruel father察King Acrisius。

So they floated on and on察and the chest danced up and down upon

the billows察and the baby slept upon its mother's breast此 but the poor

mother could not sleep察but watched and wept察and she sang to her baby

as they floated察and the song which she sang you shall learn yourselves

some day。

And now they are past the last blue headland察and in the open sea察

and there is nothing round them but the waves察and the sky察and the wind。

But the waves are gentle察and the sky is clear察and the breeze is tender

and low察 for these are the days when Halcyone and Ceyx build their

nests察and no storms ever ruffle the pleasant summer sea。

And who were Halcyone and Ceyx拭 You shall hear while the chest

floats on。 Halcyone was a fairy maiden察the daughter of the beach and

of the wind。 And she loved a sailor´boy察 and married him察and none on

earth were so happy as they。 But at last Ceyx was wrecked察and before

he could swim to the shore the billows swallowed him up。 And

Halcyone saw him drowning察and leapt into the sea to him察but in vain。

Then the Immortals took pity on them both察 and changed them into

two fair sea´birds察and now they build a floating nest every year察and sail

up and down happily for ever upon the pleasant seas of Greece。

So a night passed察and a day察and a long day it was for Danae察and

another night and day beside察 till Danae was faint with hunger and

weeping察 and yet no land appeared。 And all the while the babe slept

                                               9

quietly察and at last poor Danae drooped her head and fell asleep likewise

with her cheek against the babe's。

After a while she was awakened suddenly察for the chest was jarring

and grinding察and the air was full of sound。 She looked up察and over

her head were mighty cliffs察 all red in the setting sun察 and around her

rocks and breakers察and flying flakes of foam。 She clasped her hands

together察 and shrieked aloud for help。 And when she cried察 help met

her此 for now there came over the rocks a tall and stately man察 and

looked down wondering upon poor Danae tossing about in the chest

among the waves。

He wore a rough cloak of frieze察and on his head a broad hat to shade

his face察in his hand he carried a trident for spearing fish察and over his

shoulder was a casting´net察but Danae could see that he was no common

man by his stature察and his walk察and his flowing golden hair and beard察

and by the two servants who came behind him察carrying baskets for his

fish。 But she had hardly time to look at him察before he had laid aside

his trident and leapt down the rocks察and thrown his casting´net so surely

over Danae and the chest察 that he drew it察 and her察 and the baby察 safe

upon a ledge of rock。

Then the fisherman took Danae by the hand察and lifted her out of the

chest察and said ´

'O beautiful damsel察 what strange chance has brought you to this

island in so flail a ship拭 Who are you察and whence拭 Surely you are

some king's daughter察and this boy has somewhat more than mortal。'

And as he spoke he pointed to the babe察for its face shone like the

morning star。

But Danae only held down her head察and sobbed out ´

'Tell me to what land I have come察 unhappy that I am察 and among

what men I have fallen'

And he said察 'This isle is called Seriphos察 and I am a Hellen察 and

dwell in it。 I am the brother of Polydectes the king察and men call me

Dictys the netter察because I catch the fish of the shore。'

Then Danae fell down at his feet察and embraced his knees察and cried

´

                                                10

                                          The Heroes

'Oh察sir察have pity upon a stranger察whom a cruel doom has driven to

your land察 and let me live in your house as a servant察 but treat me

honourably察for I was once a king's daughter察and this my boy as you

have truly said is of no common race。 I will not be a charge to you察or

eat the bread of idleness察 for I am more skilful in weaving and

embroidery than all the maidens of my land。'

And she was going on察but Dictys stopped her察and raised her up察and

said ´

'My daughter察I am old察and my hairs are growing gray察while I have

no children to make my home cheerful。 Come with me then察and you

shall be a daughter to me and to my wife察 and this babe shall be our

grandchild。 For I fear the Gods察and show hospitality to all strangers察

knowing that good deeds察 like evil ones察always return to those who do

them。'

So Danae was comforted察 and went home with Dictys the good

fisherman察and was a daughter to him and to his wife察till fifteen years

were past。

PART II ´ HOW PERSEUS VOWED A RASH

                                        VOW

FIFTEEN years were past and gone察 and the babe was now grown

to be a tall lad and a sailor察and went many voyages after merchandise to

the islands round。 His mother called him Perseus察but all the people in

Seriphos said that he was not the son of mortal man察and called him the

son of Zeus察the king of the Immortals。 For though he was but fifteen察

he was taller by a head than any man in the island察 and he was the

most skilful of all in running and wrestling and boxing察and in throwing

the quoit and the javelin察and in rowing with the oar察and in playing on

the harp察and in all which befits a man。 And he was brave and truthful察

gentle and courteous察 for good old Dictys had trained him well察and well

it was for Perseus that he had done so。 For now Danae and her son fell

into great danger察 and Perseus had need of all his wit to defend his

mother and himself。

                                              11

I said that Dictys' brother was Polydectes察 king of the island。 He

was not a righteous man察like Dictys察but greedy察 and cunning察and cruel。

And when he saw fair Danae察he wanted to marry her。 But she would

not察for she did not love him察and cared for no one but her boy察and her

boy's father察 whom she never hoped to see again。 At last Polydectes

became furious察and while Perseus was away at sea he took poor Danae

away from Dictys察saying察'If you will not be my wife
