     There   are   a   few   other   true   cellepore   corals   round   the   coast。        The 

largest of   all�察  �Cervicornis�察  �may  be   dredged   a   few   miles   outside   on         the 

Exmouth   bank�察  �with   a   few   more   Tubulipores�此          �but   all   tiny   things�察  �the 

lingering   and�察  �as   it   were�察  �expiring   remnants   of   that       great   coral´world 

which�察�through the abysmal depths of past ages�察                    �formed here in Britain 

our limestone hills�察�storing up for              generations yet unborn the materials 

of agriculture and         architecture。      Inexpressibly interesting�察�even solemn�察�

to those who        will think�察�is the sight of those puny parasites which�察�as it 

were�察    �connect   the   ages   and   the   aeons�此     �yet   not   so   solemn   and   full   of 

meaning       as   that  tiny   relic   of  an   older    world�察   �the   little  pear´   shaped 

Turbinolia   ��cousin   of   the   Madrepores   and   Sea´anemones���察              �found   fossil 

in   the   Suffolk   Crag�察  �and   yet   still   lingering   here   and   there   alive   in   the 

deep     water    of   Scilly   and   the   west    coast   of    Ireland�察    �possessor     of  a 

pedigree which dates�察�perhaps�察�from ages                  before the day in which it was 

said�察 �Let us make man in our image�察                �after our likeness。;        To think that 

the whole human race�察�its joys             and its sorrows�察�its virtues and its sins�察�its 

aspirations   and   its     failures�察  �has   been   rushing   out   of   eternity   and   into 

eternity again�察      �as Arjoon in the Bhagavad   Gita beheld the race of   men 

issuing   from      Kreeshna's   flaming   mouth�察  �and   swallowed   up   in   it   again�察�

as   it   was   at   the   beginning�察─  �and   fulfilling    ;the   law   which   cannot   be 

broken�察─�while races and dynasties and               generations have been 

       ;Playing such fantastic tricks before high heaven�察�As make the angels

       Yes�察�it is this vision of the awful permanence and perfection of                     the 

natural world�察�beside the wild flux and confusion�察�the mad                     struggles�察�the 

despairing   cries   of   the   world   of   spirits   which   man     has   defiled   by   sin�察�

which would at moments crush the naturalist's                  heart�察�and make his brain 

swim   with   terror�察  �were   it   not   that   he   can  see   by   faith�察  �through   all   the 

abysses and the ages�察�not merely 

       ; Hands�察�From out the darkness�察�shaping man�察─�

       but above them a living loving countenance�察�human and yet Divine�察�

and    can    hear   a  voice    which    said   at  first�察  �Let   us   make    man     in  our

these were among           the earliest tenants of the abyss�察�yet as early as their

time�察    �perhaps even before them�察�had been conceived and actualized�察�in 

the    sharks�察�and   in Mr。  Hugh Miller's   pets the  old red   sandstone  fishes�察�

that very true vertebrate skull and brain�察�of which this is a mere                   mockery。 

��14��     Here   the   whole   animal�察 �with   his   extraordinary         feeding   mill�察  。�for 

neither   teeth   nor   jaws   is   a   fit   word   for  it�撮�  is enclosed   within   an   ever´ 

growing limestone castle�察�to the             architecture of which the Eddystone and 

the Crystal Palace are         bungling heaps�察�without arms or legs�察�eyes or ears�察�

and   yet     capable�察  �in    spite   of   his   perpetual   imprisonment�察  �of       walking�察�

feeding�察�and breeding�察�doubt it not�察�merrily enough。                   But this      result has 

been   attained   at   the   expense   of   a   complication   of     structure�察  �which   has 

baffled   all   human   analysis   and   research   into        final   causes。      As   much 

concerning this most miraculous of families                   as is needful to be known�察�

Harvey's   ;Sea´Side   Book�察─  �pp。   142´   148�察   �   pages   from   which   you   will 

probably   arise   with   a   sense   of   the    infinity   and   complexity   of   Nature�察�

even in what we are pleased to              call her ;lower; forms�察�and the simplest 

and�察  �as   it   were�察  �easiest  forms   of   life。   Conceive a   Crystal   Palace�察  。�for 

mere   difference   in      size�察  �as   both   the   naturalist   and   the   metaphysician 

know�察�has       nothing to do with the wonder�撮� whereof each separate joist�察�

girder�察  �and   pane   grows   continually   without   altering   the   shape   of           the 

whole�察  �and   you   have   conceived   only   one   of   the   miracles   embodied           in 

that little sea´egg�察�which the Creator has�察�as it were�察�to                justify to man His 

own immutability�察�furnished with a shell capable                     of enduring fossil for 

countless   ages�察  �that   we   may   confess   Him   to       have   been   as   great   when 

first His Spirit brooded on the deep�察�as He               is now and will be through all 

worlds to come。 

     But we must make haste�察�for the tide is rising fast�察�and our stone                     will 

be   restored   to   its   eleven   hours'   bath�察  �long   before   we   have    talked   over 

half the wonders which it holds。             Look though�察�ere you           retreat�察�at one or 

two more。 

     What is that little brown thing whom you have just taken off the                      rock 

to which it adhered so stoutly by his sucking´foot�拭                   �A limpet�拭        �Not at 

all�此  �he is of quite a different family and structure�察�but�察                �on the whole�察�a 

limpet´like shell would suit him well enough�察�so he                    had one given him�此�
