goes so much nearer to the ground than the scythe察that we gain by it two
hundredweight of hay on every acre。 And see察 too察 how persevering old
Madam How will not stop her work察though the machine has cut off all the
grass which she has been making for the last three months察for as fast as
we shear it off察she makes it grow again。 There are fresh blades察here at
our feet察a full inch long察which have sprung up in the last two days察for
the cattle when they are turned in next week。
But if the machine cuts all the grass察 the poor mowers will have
nothing to do。
Not so。 They are all busy enough elsewhere。 There is plenty of
other work to be done察thank God察and wholesomer and easier work than
mowing with a burning sun on their backs察drinking gallons of beer察and
getting first hot and then cold across the loins察till they lay in a store of
lumbago and sciatica察 to cripple them in their old age。 You delight in
machinery because it is curious此you should delight in it besides because it
does good察and nothing but good察where it is used察according to the laws of
Lady Why察with care察moderation察and mercy察and fair´play between man
and man。 For example此 just as the mowing´machine saves the mowers察
the threshing´machine saves the threshers from rheumatism and chest
complaintswhich they used to catch in the draught and dust of the
unhealthiest place in the whole parish察which is察the old´fashioned barn's
floor。 And so察we may hope察in future years all heavy drudgery and dirty
work will be done more and more by machines察and people will have more
and more chance of keeping themselves clean and healthy察and more and
more time to read察 and learn察 and think察 and be true civilised men and
women察instead of being mere live ploughs察or live manure´carts察such as I

have seen ere now。
A live manure´cart拭
Yes察 child。 If you had seen察 as I have seen察 in foreign lands察 poor
women察haggard察dirty察grown old before their youth was over察toiling up
hill with baskets of foul manure upon their backs察you would have said察as
I have said察 Oh for Madam How to cure that ignorance Oh for Lady
Why to cure that barbarism Oh that Madam How would teach them that
machinery must always be cheaper in the long run than human muscles
and nerves Oh that Lady Why would teach them that a woman is the
most precious thing on earth察 and that if she be turned into a beast of
burden察 Lady Whyand Madam How likewisewill surely avenge the
wrongs of their human sister ─ There察 you do not quite know what I
mean察and I do not care that you should。 It is good for little folk that big
folk should now and then ;talk over their heads察─ as the saying is察 and
make them feel how ignorant they are察and how many solemn and earnest
questions there are in the world on which they must make up their minds
some day察though not yet。 But now we will talk about the hay此 or rather
do you and the rest go and play in the hay and gather it up察build forts of it察
storm them察 pull them down察 build them up again察 shout察 laugh察 and
scream till you are hot and tired。 You will please Madam How thereby察
and Lady Why likewise。
How拭
Because Madam How naturally wants her work to succeed察and she is
at work now making you。
Making me拭
Of course。 Making a man of you察out of a boy。 And that can only
be done by the life´blood which runs through and through you。 And the
more you laugh and shout察the more pure air will pass into your blood察and
make it red and healthy察 and the more you romp and playunless you
overtire yourselfthe quicker will that blood flow through all your limbs察
to make bone and muscle察and help you to grow into a man。
But why does Lady Why like to see us play拭
She likes to see you happy察as she likes to see the trees and birds happy。
For she knows well that there is no food察 nor medicine either察 like

happiness。 If people are not happy enough察they are often tempted to do
many wrong deeds察and to think many wrong thoughts此 and if by God's
grace they know the laws of Lady Why察 and keep from sin察 still
unhappiness察if it goes on too long察wears them out察body and mind察and
they grow ill and die察of broken hearts察and broken brains察my child察and
so at last察poor souls察find ;Rest beneath the Cross。;
Children察 too察 who are unhappy察 children who are bullied察 and
frightened察 and kept dull and silent察 never thrive。 Their bodies do not
thrive察for they grow up weak。 Their minds do not thrive察for they grow
up dull。 Their souls do not thrive察for they learn mean察sly察slavish ways察
which God forbid you should ever learn。 Well said the wise man察 The
human plant察like the vegetables察can only flower in sunshine。;
So do you go察and enjoy yourself in the sunshine察but remember this
You know what happiness is。 Then if you wish to please Lady Why察and
Lady Why's Lord and King likewise察 you will never pass a little child
without trying to make it happier察even by a passing smile。 And now be
off察and play in the hay察and come back to me when you are tired。
* * * * *
Let us lie down at the foot of this old oak察and see what we can see。
And hear what we can hear察too。 What is that humming all round us察
now that the noisy mowing´machine has stopped拭
And as much softer than the noise of mowing´machine hum察 as the
machines which make it are more delicate and more curious。 Madam
How is a very skilful workwoman察 and has eyes which see deeper and
clearer than all microscopes察as you would find察if you tried to see what
makes that ;Midsummer hum; of which the haymakers are so fond察
because it promises fair weather。
Why察it is only the gnats and flies。
Only the gnats and flies拭 You might study those gnats and flies for
your whole life without finding out allor more than a very littleabout
them。 I wish I knew how they move those tiny wings of theirsa
thousand times in a second察I dare say察some of them。 I wish I knew how
far they know that they are happyfor happy they must be察whether they
know it or not。 I wish I knew how they live at all。 I wish I even knew

how many sorts there are humming round us at this moment。
How many kinds拭 Three or four拭
More probably thirty or forty round this single tree。
But why should there be so many kinds of living things拭 Would not
one or two have done just as well拭
Why察 indeed拭 Why should there not have been only one sort of
butterfly察and he only of one colour察a plain brown察or a plain white拭
And why should there be so many sorts of birds察all robbing the garden
at once拭 Thrushes察 and blackbirds察 and sparrows察 and chaffinches察 and
greenfinches察and bullfinches察and tomtits。
And there are four kinds of tomtits round here察 remember此but we
may go on with such talk for ever。 Wiser men than we have asked the
same question此 but Lady Why will not answer them yet。 However察there
is another question察which Madam How seems inclined to answer just now察
which is almost as deep and mysterious。
What拭
HOW all these different kinds of things became different。
Oh察do tell me
Not I。 You must begin at the beginning察before you can end at the
end察or even make one step towards the end。
What do you mean拭
You must learn the differences between things察before you can find out
how those differences came about。 You must learn Madam How's
alphabet before you can read her book。 And Madam How's alphab
