The Purseby Honore de BalzacTranslated by Clara BellTo Sofka"Have you observed, mademoiselle, that the painters andsculptors of the Middle Ages, when they placed two figures inadoration, one on each side of a fair Saint, never failed togive them a family likeness? When you here see your name amongthose that are dear to me, and under whose auspices I place myworks, remember that touching harmony, and you will see inthis not so much an act of homage as an expression of thebrotherly affection of your devoted servant,...

-SHELLY, Prometheus Unbound Part One TERRA INCOGNITA Hell is the place of those who have denied; They find there what they planted and what dug. A Lake of Spaces, and a Wood of Nothing, And wander there and drift, and never cease Wailing for substance. -W.B. YEATS, The Hour Glass 1 The air was electric the day the thief crossed the city, certain that tonight, after so many weeks of frustration, he would finally locate the card-player. It was not an easy journey. Eighty-five percent of Warsaw had been leveled, either by the months of mortar bombardment that had preceded the R
March 9, 1918Caribbean SeaThe Cyclops had less than one hour to live. In forty-eight minutes she would bee a mass tomb for her 309 passengers and crew a tragedy unforeseen and unheralded by ominous premonitions, mocked by an empty sea and a diamond-clear sky. Even the seagulls that had haunted her wake for the past week darted and soared in languid indifference, their keen instincts dulled by the mild weather. There was a slight breeze from the southeast that barely curled the American flag on her stern. At three-thirty in the morning, most of the off-duty crewmen and passengers were asleep. A

Part 5The good, charitable gentleman encouraged them to quit the Placefor fear they should be cut off from any retreat at all by the violenceof the distemper; but whither they should go, that he found very hardto direct them to. At last John asked of him whether he, being ajustice of the peace, would give them certificates of health to otherjustices whom they might come before; that so whatever might betheir lot, they might not be repulsed now they had been also so longfrom London. This his worship immediately granted, and gave themproper letters of health, and from thence they were at libe
THE SPHINX WITHOUT A SECRETONE afternoon I was sitting outside the Cafe de la Paix, watchingthe splendour and shabbiness of Parisian life, and wondering overmy vermouth at the strange panorama of pride and poverty that waspassing before me, when I heard some one call my name. I turnedround, and saw Lord Murchison. We had not met since we had been atcollege together, nearly ten years before, so I was delighted tocome across him again, and we shook hands warmly. At Oxford we hadbeen great friends. I had liked him immensely, he was so handsome,...
The Iron Puddlerby James J. DavisMY LIFE IN THE ROLLING MILLS AND WHAT CAME OF ITIntroduction by JOSEPH G. CANNONThe man whose life story is here presented between book covers is at the time of writing only forty-eight years old. When I met him many years ago he was a young man full of enthusiasm. I remember saying to him then, "With your enthusiasm and the sparkle which you have in your eyes I am sure you will make good."Why should so young a man, one so recently elevated to official prominence, write his memoirs? That question will occur to those who do not know Jim Davis. His elevation to

Susy, A Story of the Plainsby Bret HarteCHAPTER I.Where the San Leandro turnpike stretches its dusty, hot, andinterminable length along the valley, at a point where the heat anddust have become intolerable, the monotonous expanse of wild oats oneither side illimitable, and the distant horizon apparently remoterthan ever, it suddenly slips between a stunted thicket or hedge of"scrub oaks," which until that moment had been undistinguishableabove the long, misty, quivering level of the grain. The thicketrising gradually in height, but with a regular slope whose gradient...
THE BLUE MOUNTAINSThere were once a Scotsman and an Englishman and an Irishmanserving in the army together, who took it into their heads to runaway on the first opportunity they could get. On thesecond morning the Scotsman saw from the top of his tree a greatcastle far away. He said to himself that he would certainly die...
