VOLUME IICHAPTER IAvaunt! and quit my sight! Let the Earth hide thee! Thy bones are marrowless, thy blood is cold! Thou hast no speculation in those eyes Which Thou dost glare with! Hence, horrible shadow! Unreal mockery hence! Macbeth.Continuation of the History of Don Raymond. My journey was uncommonly agreeable: I found the Baron a Man of some sense, but little knowledge of the world. He had past a great part of his life without stirring beyond the precincts of his own domains, and consequently his manners were far from being the

Pageant of Summerby Richard JefferiesI.GREEN rushes, long and thick, standing up above the edge of theditch, told the hour of the year as distinctly as the shadow on thedial the hour of the day. Green and thick and sappy to the touch, they felt like summer, soft and elastic, as if full of life, mererushes though they were. On the fingers they left a green scent;rushes have a separate scent of green, so, too, have ferns, verydifferent from that of grass or leaves. Rising from brown sheaths, the tall stems enlarged a little in the middle, like classical...

PEN, PENCIL AND POISON - A STUDY IN GREENIt has constantly been made a subject of reproach against artistsand men of letters that they are lacking in wholeness andcompleteness of nature. As a rule this must necessarily be so.That very concentration of vision and intensity of purpose which isthe characteristic of the artistic temperament is in itself a modeof limitation. To those who are preoccupied with the beauty ofform nothing else seems of much importance. Yet there are manyexceptions to this rule. Rubens served as ambassador, and Goethe...

Hisfeelings were something like those of an old dancer at the theatre, who is dancing for the last time, and knows that on the morrow she...

Returning Homeby Anthony TrollopeIt is generally supposed that people who live at home, gooddomestic people, who love tea and their arm-chairs, and who keep theparlour hearth-rug ever warm,it is generally supposed that theseare the people who value home the most, and best appreciate all thecomforts of that cherished institution. I am inclined to doubtthis. It is, I think, to those who live farthest away from home, tothose who find the greatest difficulty in visiting home, that theword conveys the sweetest idea. In some distant parts of the worldit may be that an Englishman acknowledges his

Not that things were exactly a bundle of laughs down on old terra firma at the present time, oh dear me, no. Things had never been quite the same since, in a moment of gay abandonment, outgoing US president Wayne L. Wormwood had chosen to press the nuclear button just as the New Year bells were gaily chiming in the arrival of the twenty-first century. This generally unwele turn in events had caught
