funeral feast to the multitude察。which custom is the occasion of poverty to many of the Jews察because they are forced to feast the multitude察for if any one omits it察he is not esteemed a holy person撮 he put on a white garment察and went up to the temple察where the people accosted him with various acclamations。 He also spake kindly to the multitude from an elevated seat and a throne of gold察and returned them thanks for the zeal they had shown about his father's funeral察and the submission they had made to him察as if he were already settled in the kingdom察but he told them withal察that he would not at present take upon him either the authority of a king察or the names thereto belonging察until Caesar察who is made lord of this whole affair by the testament察confirm the succession察for that when the soldiers would have set the diadem on his head at Jericho察he would not accept of it察but that he would make abundant requitals察not to the soldiers only察but to the people察for their alacrity and good´will to him察when the superior lords the RomansАshould have given him a complete title to the kingdom察for that it should be his study to appear in all things better than his father。
2。 Upon this the multitude were pleased察and presently made a trial of what he intended察by asking great things of him察for some made a clamor that he would ease them in their taxes察others察that he would take off the duties upon commodities察and some察that he would loose those that were in prison察in all which cases he answered readily to their satisfaction察in order to get the good´will of the multitude察after which he offered the properАsacrifices察and feasted with his friends。 And here it was that a great many of those that desired innovations came in crowds towards the evening察and began then to mourn on their own account察when the public mourning for the king was over。 These lamented those that were put to death by Herod察because they had cut down the golden eagle that had been over the gate of the temple。 Nor was this mourning of a private nature察but the lamentations were very great察the mourning solemn察and the weeping such as was loudly heard all over the city察as being for those men who had perished for the laws of their country察and for the temple。 They cried out that a punishment ought to be inflicted for these men upon those that were honored by Herod察and that察in the first place察the man whom he had made high priest should be deprived察and that it was fit to choose a person of greater piety and purity than he was。
3。 At these clamors Archelaus was provoked察but restrained himself from taking vengeance on the authors察on account of the haste he was in of going to Rome察as fearing lest察upon his making war on the multitude察such an action might detain him at home。 Accordingly察he made trial to quiet the innovators by persuasion察rather than by force察and sent his general in a private way to them察and by him exhorted them to be quiet。 But the seditious threw stones at him察and drove him away察as he came into the temple察and before he could say any thing to them。 The like treatment they showed to others察who came to them after him察many of which were sent by Archelaus察in order to reduce them to sobriety察and these answered still on all occasions after a passionate manner察and it openly appeared that they would not be quiet察if their numbers were but considerable。 And indeed察at the feast of unleavened bread察which was now at hand察and is by the Jews called the Passover察and used to he celebrated with a great number of sacrifices察an innumerable multitude of the people came out of the country to worship察some of these stood in the temple bewailing the Rabbins that had been put to deathВ察and procured their sustenance by begging察in order to support their sedition。 At this Archclaus was aftrighted察and privately sent a tribune察with his cohort of soldiers察upon them察before the disease should spread over the whole multitude察and gave orders that they should constrain those that began the tumult察by force察to be quiet。 At these the whole multitude were irritated察and threw stones at many of the soldiers察and killed them察but the tribune fled away wounded察and had much ado to escape so。 After which they betook themselves to their sacrifices察as if they had done no mischief察nor did it appear to Archelaus that the multitude could be restrained without bloodshed察so he sent his whole army upon them察the footmen in great multitudes察by the way of the city察and the horsemen by the way of the plain察who察falling upon them on the sudden察as they were offering their sacrifices察destroyed about three thousand of them察but the rest of the multitude were dispersed upon the adjoining mountains此these were followed by Archelaus's heralds察who commanded every one to retire to their own homes察whither they all went察and left the festival。
CHAPTER 2。
Archelaus Goes To Rome With A Great Number Of His Kindred。 He Is There Accused Before Caesar By Antipater察But Is Superior To His Accusers In Judgment By The Means Of That Defense Which Nicolaus Made For Him。
1。 Archelaus went down now to the sea´side察with his mother and his friends察Poplas察and Ptolemy察and Nicolaus察and left behind him Philip察to be his steward in the palace察and to take care of his domestic affairs。 Salome went also along with him with her sons察as did also the king's brethren and sons´in´law。 These察in appearance察went to give him all the assistance they were able察in order to secure his succession察but in reality to accuse him for his breach of the laws by what he had done at the temple。 2。 But as they were come to Cesarea察Sabinus察the procurator of Syria察met them察he was going up to Judea察to secure Herod's effects察but Varus察。president of Syria撮Аwho was come thither察restrained him from going any farther。 This Varus Archelaus had sent for察by the earnest entreaty of Ptolemy。 At this time察indeed察Sabinus察to gratify Varus察neither went to the citadels察nor did he shut up the treasuries where his father's money was laid up察but promised that he would lie still察until Caesar should have taken cognizance of the affair。 So he abode at Cesarea察but as soon as those that were his hinderance were gone察when Varus was gone to Antioch察and Archclaus was sailed to Rome察he immediately went on to Jerusalem察and seized upon the palace。 And when he had called for the governors of the citadels察and the stewards of the king's private affairsВ察he tried to sift out the accounts of the money察and to take possession of the citadels。 But the governors of those citadels were not unmindful of the commands laid upon them by Archelaus察and continued to guard them察and said the custody of them rather belonged to Caesar than to Archelaus。
3。 In the mean time察Antipas went also to Rome察to strive for the kingdom察and to insist that the former testament察wherein he was named to be king察was valid before the latter testament。 Salome had also promised to assist him察as had many of Archelaus's kindred察who sailed along with Archelaus himself also。 He also carried along with him his mother察and Ptolemy察the brother of Nicolaus察who seemed one of great weight察on account of the great trust Herod put in him察he having been one of his most honored friends。 However察Antipas depended chiefly upon Ireneus察the orator察upon whose authority he had rejected such as advised him to yield to Archelaus察because he was his elder brother察and because the second testament gave the kingdom to him。 The inclinations also of all Archelaus's kindred察who hated him察were removed to Antipas察when they came to Rome察although in the first place every one rather desired to live under their own laws without a kingВ察and to be under a Roman governor察but if they should fail in that point察these desired that Antipas might be their king。
4。 Sabinus did also afford these his assistance to the same purpose by letters he sent察wherein he accused Archelaus before Caesar察and highly commended Antipas。 Salome also察and those with her察put the crimes which they accused Archelaus of in order察and put them into Caesar's hands察and after they had done that察Archelaus wrote down the reasons of his claim察and察by Ptolemy察sent in his father's ring察and his father's accounts。 And when Caesar had maturely weighed by himself what both had to allege for themselves察as also had considered of the great burden of the kingdom察and largeness of the revenues察and withal the number of the children Herod had left behind him察and had moreover read the letters he had received from Varus and Sabinus on this occasion察he assembled the principal persons among the Romans together察。in which assembly Caius察the son of Agrippa察and his daughter Julias察but by himself adopted for his own son察sat in the first seat撮 and gave the pleaders leave to speak。
5。 Then stood up Salome's son察Antipater察。who of all Archelaus's antagonists was the shrewdest pleader撮 and accused him in the following speech此That Archelaus did in words contend for the kingdom察but that in deeds he had long exercised royal authority察and so did but insult Caesar in desiring to be now heard on that account察since he had not staid for his determination about the succession察and since he had s
