caught her husband's eyelid drooping down for the moment in an
unmistakable wink。
It was at this time that Loretta received a letter from Billy that was
somewhat different from his others。 In the main察 like all his letters察 it
was pathological。 It was a long recital of symptoms and sufferings察his
nervousness察his sleeplessness察and the state of his heart。 Then followed
reproaches察such as he had never made before。 They were sharp enough
to make her weep察 and true enough to put tragedy into her face。 This
tragedy she carried down to the breakfast table。 It made Jack and Mrs。
Hemingway speculative察 and it worried Ned。 They glanced to him for
explanation察but he shook his head。
;I'll find out to´night察─Mrs。 Hemingway said to her husband。
But Ned caught Loretta in the afternoon in the big living´room。 She
tried to turn away。 He caught her hands察 and she faced him with wet
lashes and trembling lips。 He looked at her察 silently and kindly。 The
lashes grew wetter。
;There察there察don't cry察little one察─he said soothingly。
He put his arm protectingly around her shoulder。 And to his shoulder察
like a tired child察she turned her face。 He thrilled in ways unusual for a
Greek who has recovered from the long sickness。
;Oh察Ned察─she sobbed on his shoulder察 if you only knew how wicked
I am ─
He smiled indulgently察 and breathed in a great breath freighted with
the fragrance of her hair。 He thought of his world´experience of women察
and drew another long breath。 There seemed to emanate from her the
perfect sweetness of a child;the aura of a white soul察─was the way he
phrased it to himself。
Then he noticed that her sobs were increasing。
;What's the matter察 little one拭─ he asked pettingly and almost

paternally。 ;Has Jack been bullying you拭 Or has your dearly beloved
sister failed to write拭─
She did not answer察and he felt that he really must kiss her hair察that he
could not be responsible if the situation continued much longer。
;Tell me察─he said gently察 and we'll see what I can do。;
;I can't。 You will despise me。Oh察Ned察I am so ashamed ─
He laughed incredulously察and lightly touched her hair with his lipsso
lightly that she did not know。
;Dear little one察let us forget all about it察whatever it is。 I want to tell
you how I love;
She uttered a sharp cry that was all delight察and then moaned
;Too late ─
;Too late拭─he echoed in surprise。
;Oh察why did I拭 Why did I拭─she was moaning。
He was aware of a swift chill at his heart。
;What拭─he asked。
;Oh察I 。 。 。 he 。 。 。 Billy。
;I am such a wicked woman察Ned。 I know you will never speak to
me again。;
;Thiserthis Billy察─he began haltingly。 ;He is your brother拭─
;No 。 。 。 he 。 。 。 I didn't know。 I was so young。 I could not help it。
Oh察I shall go mad I shall go mad ─
It was then that Loretta felt his shoulder and the encircling arm
become limp。 He drew away from her gently察 and gently he deposited
her in a big chair察 where she buried her face and sobbed afresh。 He
twisted his moustache fiercely察then drew up another chair and sat down。
;II do not understand察─he said。
;I am so unhappy察─she wailed。
;Why unhappy拭─
;Because 。 。 。 he 。 。 。 he wants me to marry him。;
His face cleared on the instant察 and he placed a hand soothingly on
hers。
;That should not make any girl unhappy察─ he remarked sagely。
;Because you don't love him is no reasonof course察you don't love him拭─

Loretta shook her head and shoulders in a vigorous negative。
;What拭─
Bashford wanted to make sure。
;No察─she asserted explosively。 ;I don't love Billy I don't want to
love Billy ─
;Because you don't love him察─Bashford resumed with confidence察 is
no reason that you should be unhappy just because he has proposed to
you。;
She sobbed again察and from the midst of her sobs she cried
;That's the trouble。 I wish I did love him。 Oh察I wish I were dead ─
;Now察 my dear child察 you are worrying yourself over trifles。; His
other hand crossed over after its mate and rested on hers。 ;Women do it
every day。 Because you have changed your mind or did not know your
mind察because you haveto use an unnecessarily harsh wordjilted a man´
´;
;Jilted ─ She had raised her head and was looking at him with tear´
dimmed eyes。 ;Oh察Ned察if that were all ─
;All拭─ he asked in a hollow voice察 while his hands slowly retreated
from hers。 He was about to speak further察then remained silent。
;But I don't want to marry him察─Loretta broke forth protestingly。
;Then I shouldn't察─he counselled。
;But I ought to marry him。;
;OUGHT to marry him拭─
She nodded。
;That is a strong word。;
;I know it is察─ she acquiesced察 while she strove to control her
trembling lips。 Then she spoke more calmly。 ;I am a wicked woman察a
terribly wicked woman。 No one knows how wicked I amexcept Billy。;
There was a pause。 Ned Bashford's face was grave察 and he looked
queerly at Loretta。
;HeBilly knows拭─he asked finally。
A reluctant nod and flaming cheeks was the reply。
He debated with himself for a while察 seeming察 like a diver察 to be
preparing himself for the plunge。
39

;Tell me about it。; He spoke very firmly。 ;You must tell me all of
it。;
;And will youeverforgive me拭─she asked in a faint察small voice。
He hesitated察drew a long breath察and made the plunge。
;Yes察─he said desperately。 ;I'll forgive you。 Go ahead。;
;There was no one to tell me察─she began。 ;We were with each other
so much。 I did not know anything of the worldthen。;
She paused to meditate。 Bashford was biting his lip impatiently。
;If I had only known;
She paused again。
;Yes察go on察─he urged。
;We were together almost every evening。;
;Billy拭─he demanded察with a savageness that startled her。
;Yes察of course察Billy。 We were with each other so much 。 。 。 If I
had only known 。 。 。 There was no one to tell me 。 。 。 I was so young;
Her lips parted as though to speak further察 and she regarded him
anxiously。
;The scoundrel ─
With the explosion Ned Bashford was on his feet察 no longer a tired
Greek察but a violently angry young man。
;Billy is not a scoundrel察he is a good man察─Loretta defended察with a
firmness that surprised Bashford。
;I suppose you'll be telling me next that it was all your fault察─he said
sarcastically。
She nodded。
;What拭─he shouted。
;It was all my fault察─she said steadily。 ;I should never have let him。
I was to blame。;
Bashford ceased from his pacing up and down察and when he spoke察his
voice was resigned。
;All right察─ he said。 ;I don't blame you in the least察 Loretta。 And
you have been very honest。 But Billy is right察and you are wrong。 You
must get married。;
;To Billy拭─she asked察in a dim察far´away voice。

;Yes察to Billy。 I'll see to it。 Where does he live拭 I'll make him。;
;But I don't want to marry Billy ─she cried out in alarm。 ;Oh察Ned察
you won't do that拭─
;I shall察─ he answered sternly。 ;You must。 And Billy must。 Do
you understand拭─
Loretta buried her face in the cushioned chair back察and broke
