girl Much more charming than Mary察who never said things of that kind。
;Well拭─I asked benignantly察as she hesitated。
;I want to ask your advice。 What shall I do拭─
;Do拭─
;Yes。 You see察Aunt Emily always told me I should be provided for。
I suppose she forgot察or didn't think she was likely to dieanyway察I am
*NOT provided for And I don't know what to do。 Do you think I ought

to go away from here at once拭─
;Good heavens察no They don't want to part with you察I'm sure。;
Cynthia hesitated a moment察plucking up the grass with her tiny hands。
Then she said此 Mrs。 Cavendish does。 She hates me。;
;Hates you拭─I cried察astonished。
Cynthia nodded。
;Yes。 I don't know why察but she can't bear me察and *HE can't察either。;
;There I know you're wrong察─I said warmly。 ;On the contrary察John
is very fond of you。;
;Oh察 yes´JOHN。 I meant Lawrence。 Not察 of course察 that I care
whether Lawrence hates me or not。 Still察it's rather horrid when no one
loves you察isn't it拭─
;But they do察 Cynthia dear察─ I said earnestly。 ;I'm sure you are
mistaken。 Look察there is Johnand Miss Howard;
Cynthia nodded rather gloomily。 ;Yes察John likes me察I think察and of
course Evie察 for all her gruff ways察 wouldn't be unkind to a fly。 But
Lawrence never speaks to me if he can help it察and Mary can hardly bring
herself to be civil to me。 She wants Evie to stay on察is begging her to察but
she doesn't want me察 andandI don't know what to do。; Suddenly the
poor child burst out crying。
I don't know what possessed me。 Her beauty察 perhaps察 as she sat
there察with the sunlight glinting down on her head察perhaps the sense of
relief at encountering someone who so obviously could have no
connection with the tragedy察 perhaps honest pity for her youth and
loneliness。 Anyway察 I leant forward察 and taking her little hand察 I said
awkwardly此
;Marry me察Cynthia。;
Unwittingly察I had hit upon a sovereign remedy for her tears。 She sat
up at once察drew her hand away察and said察with some asperity此
;Don't be silly ─
I was a little annoyed。
;I'm not being silly。 I am asking you to do me the honour of
becoming my wife。;

To my intense surprise察 Cynthia burst out laughing察 and called me a
;funny dear。;
;It's perfectly sweet of you察─she said察 but you know you don't want
to ─
;Yes察I do。 I've got;
;Never mind what you've got。 You don't really want to and I don't
either。;
;Well察 of course察 that settles it察─ I said stiffly。 ;But I don't see
anything to laugh at。 There's nothing funny about a proposal。;
;No察indeed察─said Cynthia。 ;Somebody might accept you next time。
Good´bye察you've cheered me up very much。;
And察 with a final uncontrollable burst of merriment察 she vanished
through the trees。
Thinking over the interview察 it struck me as being profoundly
unsatisfactory。
It occurred to me suddenly that I would go down to the village察and
look up Bauerstein。 Somebody ought to be keeping an eye on the fellow。
At the same time察it would be wise to allay any suspicions he might have
as to his being suspected。 I remembered how Poirot had relied on my
diplomacy。 Accordingly察I went to the little house with the ;Apartments;
card inserted in the window察where I knew he lodged察and tapped on the
door。
An old woman came and opened it。
;Good afternoon察─I said pleasantly。 ;Is Dr。 Bauerstein in拭─
She stared at me。
;Haven't you heard拭─
;Heard what拭─
;About him。;
;What about him拭─
;He's took。;
;Took拭Dead拭─
;No察took by the perlice。;
;By the police ─I gasped。 ;Do you mean they've arrested him拭─
128

;Yes察that's it察and;
I waited to hear no more察but tore up the village to find Poirot。

CHAPTER X。 THE ARREST
To my extreme annoyance察 Poirot was not in察 and the old Belgian
who answered my knock informed me that he believed he had gone to
London。
I was dumbfounded。 What on earth could Poirot be doing in London
Was it a sudden decision on his part察or had he already made up his mind
when he parted from me a few hours earlier拭
I retraced my steps to Styles in some annoyance。 With Poirot away察I
was uncertain how to act。 Had he foreseen this arrest拭Had he not察in all
probability察 been the cause of it拭 Those questions I could not resolve。
But in the meantime what was I to do拭 Should I announce the arrest
openly at Styles察or not拭Though I did not acknowledge it to myself察the
thought of Mary Cavendish was weighing on me。 Would it not be a
terrible shock to her拭For the moment察I set aside utterly any suspicions of
her。 She could not be implicatedotherwise I should have heard some
hint of it。
Of course察 there was no possibility of being able permanently to
conceal Dr。 Bauerstein's arrest from her。 It would be announced in every
newspaper on the morrow。 Still察I shrank from blurting it out。 If only
Poirot had been accessible察 I could have asked his advice。 What
possessed him to go posting off to London in this unaccountable way拭
In spite of myself察 my opinion of his sagacity was immeasurably
heightened。 I would never have dreamt of suspecting the doctor察had not
Poirot put it into my head。 Yes察decidedly察the little man was clever。
After some reflecting察I decided to take John into my confidence察and
leave him to make the matter public or not察as he thought fit。
He gave vent to a prodigious whistle察as I imparted the news。
;Great Scot You *WERE right察 then。 I couldn't believe it at the
time。;
;No察 it is astonishing until you get used to the idea察 and see how it
makes everything fit in。 Now察what are we to do拭Of course察it will be

generally known to´morrow。;
John reflected。
;Never mind察─ he said at last察 we won't say anything at present。
There is no need。 As you say察it will be known soon enough。;
But to my intense surprise察 on getting down early the next morning察
and eagerly opening the newspapers察there was not a word about the arrest
There was a column of mere padding about ;The Styles Poisoning Case察─
but nothing further。 It was rather inexplicable察 but I supposed that察 for
some reason or other察Japp wished to keep it out of the papers。 It worried
me just a little察for it suggested the possibility that there might be further
arrests to come。
After breakfast察I decided to go down to the village察and see if Poirot
had returned yet察but察before I could start察a well´known face blocked one
of the windows察and the well´known voice said此
;Bon jour察mon ami ─
;Poirot察─ I exclaimed察 with relief察 and seizing him by both hands察 I
dragged him into the room。 ;I was never so glad to see anyone。 Listen察
I have said nothing to anybody but John。 Is that right拭─
;My friend察─ replied Poirot察 I do not know what you are talking
about。;
;Dr。 Bauerstein's arrest察of course察─I answered impatiently。
;Is Bauerstein arrested察then拭─
;Did you not know it拭─
;Not the least in the world。; But察pausing a moment察he added此 Still察it
does not surprise me。 After all察we are onl
