     ;You will watch ─

     Evelyn Howard bowed her head。

     ;Yes察I can't help doing that。 I am always watchingalways hoping I

shall be proved wrong。;

     ;If we are wrong察well and good察─said Poirot。 ;No one will be more

pleased than I shall。 But察if we are right拭If we are right察Miss Howard察

on whose side are you then拭─

     ;I don't know察I don't know;

     ;Come now。;

     ;It could be hushed up。;

     ;There must be no hushing up。;

     ;But Emily herself; She broke off。

     ;Miss Howard察─said Poirot gravely察 this is unworthy of you。;

     Suddenly she took her face from her hands。

     ;Yes察─she said quietly察 that was not Evelyn Howard who spoke ─She

flung her head up proudly。 ;*THIS is Evelyn Howard And she is on the

side of Justice Let the cost be what it may。; And with these words察she

walked firmly out of the room。

     ;There察─ said Poirot察 looking after her察 goes a very valuable ally。

That woman察Hastings察has got brains as well as a heart。;

     I did not reply。     ;Instinct is a marvellous thing察─mused   Poirot。            ;It

can neither be explained nor ignored。;

     ;You and Miss Howard seem to know what you are talking about察─I

observed coldly。       ;Perhaps you don't realize that I am still in the dark。;

     ;Really拭Is that so察mon ami拭─

     ;Yes。    Enlighten me察will you拭─

     Poirot studied me attentively for a moment or two。 Then察 to my

intense surprise察he shook his head decidedly。

     ;No察my friend。;

     ;Oh察look here察why not拭─

     ;Two is enough for a secret。;

     ;Well察I think it is very unfair to keep back facts from me。;

     ;I am not keeping back facts。 Every fact that I know is in your

possession。 You can draw your own deductions from them。 This time it

is a question of ideas。;

     ;Still察it would be interesting to know。;

     Poirot looked at me very earnestly察and again shook his head。

                                              114

     ;You see察─he said sadly察 *YOU have no instincts。;

     ;It was intelligence you were requiring just now察─I pointed out。

     ;The two often go together察─said Poirot enigmatically。

     The remark seemed so utterly irrelevant that I did not even take the

trouble to answer it。 But I decided that if I made any interesting and

important discoveriesas no doubt I shouldI would keep them to myself察

and surprise Poirot with the ultimate result。

     There are times when it is one's duty to assert oneself。

       CHAPTER IX Dr。 BAUERSTEIN

     I HAD had no opportunity as yet of passing on Poirot's message to

Lawrence。 But now察as I strolled out on the lawn察still nursing a grudge

against my friend's high´handedness察I saw Lawrence on the croquet lawn察

aimlessly knocking a couple of very ancient balls about察with a still more

ancient mallet。

     It struck me that it would be a good opportunity to deliver my message。

Otherwise察Poirot himself might relieve me of it。 It was true that I did

not quite gather its purport察but I flattered myself that by Lawrence's reply察

and perhaps a little skillful cross´examination on my part察I should soon

perceive its significance。      Accordingly I accosted him。

     ;I've been looking for you察─I remarked untruthfully。

     ;Have you拭─

     ;Yes。    The truth is察I've got a message for youfrom Poirot。;

     ;Yes拭─

     ;He told me to wait until I was alone with you察─I said察dropping my

voice significantly察and watching him intently out of the corner of my eye。

I have always been rather good at what is called察 I believe察 creating an

atmosphere。

     ;Well拭─

     There was no change of expression in the dark melancholic face。

Had he any idea of what I was about to say拭

     ;This is the message。; I dropped my voice still lower。 ; 'Find the

extra coffee´cup察and you can rest in peace。' ;

     ;What on earth does he mean拭─ Lawrence stared at me in quite

unaffected astonishment。

     ;Don't you know拭─

     ;Not in the least。 Do you拭─

     I was compelled to shake my head。

     ;What extra coffee´cup拭─

     ;I don't know。;

                                             116

                           THE MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR AT STYLES

     ;He'd better ask Dorcas察 or one of the maids察 if he wants to know

about coffee´cups。        It's their business察not mine。        I don't know anything

about the coffee´cups察 except that we've got some that are never used察

which are a perfect dream Old Worcester。 You're not a connoisseur察are

you察Hastings拭─

     I shook my head。

     ;You miss a lot。 A really perfect bit of old chinait's pure delight to

handle it察or even to look at it。;

     ;Well察what am I to tell Poirot拭─

     ;Tell him I don't know what he's talking about。 It's double Dutch to

me。;

     ;All right。;

     I was moving off towards the house again when he suddenly called me

back。

     ;I say察what was the end of that message拭Say it over again察will you拭─

     ; 'Find the extra coffee´cup察and you can rest in peace。' Are you sure

you don't know what it means拭─I asked him earnestly。

     He shook his head。

     ;No察─he said musingly察 I don't。         II wish I did。;

     The boom of the gong sounded from the house察 and we went in

together。 Poirot had been asked by John to remain to lunch察 and was

already seated at the table。

     By tacit consent察 all mention of the tragedy was barred。 We

conversed on the war察and other outside topics。 But after the cheese and

biscuits had been handed round察 and Dorcas had left the room察 Poirot

suddenly leant forward to Mrs。 Cavendish。

     ;Pardon me察madame察for recalling unpleasant memories察but I have a

little idea;Poirot's ;little ideas; were becoming a perfect byword;and

would like to ask one or two questions。;

     ;Of me拭Certainly。;

     ;You are too amiable察madame。 What I want to ask is this此the door

leading into Mrs。 Inglethorp's room from that of Mademoiselle Cynthia察it

was bolted察you say拭─

                                              117

´ Page 118´

                            THE MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR AT STYLES

     ;Certainly it was bolted察─ replied Mary Cavendish察 rather surprised。

;I said so at the inquest。;

     ;Bolted拭─

     ;Yes。; She looked perplexed。

     ;I mean察─explained Poirot察 you are sure it was bolted察and not merely

locked拭─

     ;Oh察I see what you mean。 No察I don't know。 I said bolted察meaning

that it was fastened察 and I could not open it察 but I believe all the doors

were found bolted on the inside。;

     ;Still察as far as you are concerned察the door might equally well have

been locked拭─

     ;Oh察yes。;

     ;You yourself did not happen to notice察 madame察 when you entered

Mrs。 Inglethorp's room察whether that door was bolted or not拭─

     ;II believe it was。;

     ;But you did not see it拭─

     ;No。     Inever looked。;

     ;But I did察─ interrupted Lawrence suddenly。 ;I happened to notice

that it *WAS bolted。;

     ;Ah察that settles it。; And Poirot looked crestfallen。

     I could not help rejoicing that察for once察one of his ;little ideas; had

come to naught。

     After lunch Poirot begged me to accompany him home。 I consented

rather stiffly。

     ;You are annoyed察 is it not so拭─ he asked anxiously察 as we walked

through the park。

     ;Not at all察─I said coldly。

     ;That is well。     That lifts a great load from my mind。;

     This was not quite what I had intended。 I had hoped that he would

have observed the stiffness of my manner。 Still察the fervour of his words

went towards the appeasing of my just displeasure。 I thawed。

     ;I gave Lawrence your message察─I said。

     ;And what did he say拭He was entirely puzzled拭─
