                                              THE RAVENTHE RAVEN

     Once upon a midnight dreary察while I pondered察weak and weary察Over

many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore While I nodded察

nearly napping察 suddenly there came a tapping察 As of some one gently

rapping察 rapping at my chamber door。 ;'Tis some visiter察─ I muttered察

;tapping at my chamber doorOnly this and nothing more。;

     Ah察 distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December察 And each

separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor。 Eagerly I wished

the morrowvainly I had sought to borrow From my books surcease of

sorrowsorrow for the lost Lenore For the rare and radiant maiden

whom the angels name LenoreNameless here for evermore。

     And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain Thrilled

mefilled me with fantastic terrors never felt before察So that now察to still

the beating of my heart察 I stood repeating ;'Tis some visiter entreating

entrance at my chamber door Some late visiter entreating entrance at my

chamber doorThis it is and nothing more。;

     Presently my soul grew stronger察hesitating then no longer察 Sir察─said I察

;or Madam察truly your forgiveness I implore察But the fact is I was napping察

and so gently you came rapping察And so faintly you came tapping察tapping

at my chamber door察That I scarce was sure I heard you;here I opened

wide the doorDarkness there and nothing more。

     Deep into that darkness peering察long I stood there wondering察fearing察

Doubting察dreaming dreams no mortals ever dared to dream before察 But

the silence was unbroken察and the stillness gave no token察And the only

word there spoken was the whispered word察 Lenore拭─This I whispered察

and an echo murmured back the word察 Lenore Merely this and nothing

more。

     Back into the chamber turning察all my soul within me burning察Soon

again I heard a tapping something louder than before。 ;Surely察─ said I察

;surely that is something at my window lattice察 Let me see察 then察 what

thereat is and this mystery explore Let my heart be still a moment and

this mystery explore'Tis the wind and nothing more。

     Open here I flung the shutter察when察with many a flirt and flutter察In

there stepped a stately Raven of the saintly days of yore。 Not the least

obeisance made he察not a minute stopped or stayed he察But察with mien of

lord or lady察 perched above my chamber door Perched upon a bust of

Pallas just above my chamber doorPerched察and sat察and nothing more。

     Then the ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling察By the grave

and stern decorum of the countenance it wore察 Though thy crest be shorn

and shaven察thou察─ I said察 art sure no craven察Ghastly grim and ancient

Raven wandering from the Nightly shore Tell me what thy lordly name

is on the Night's Plutonian shore Quoth the Raven察 Nevermore。;

     Much I marvelled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly察

Though its answer little meaninglittle relevancy bore察 For we cannot

help agreeing that no living human being Ever yet was blessed with seeing

bird above his chamber door Bird or beast upon the sculptured bust

above his chamber doorWith such name as ;Nevermore。;

     But the Raven察sitting lonely on that placid bust察spoke only That one

word察as if its soul in that one word he did outpour Nothing farther then he

uttered察not a feather then he fluttered Till I scarcely more than muttered此

;Other friends have flown before On the morrow he will leave me察as my

Hopes have flown before。;Then the bird said ;Nevermore。;

     Startled at the stillness broken by reply so aptly spoken察 Doubtless察─

said I察 what it utters is its only stock and store察 Caught from some

unhappy master whom unmerciful Disaster Followed fast and followed

faster till his songs one burden bore Till the dirges of his Hope that

melancholy burden boreOf 'Nevernevermore。';

     But the Raven still beguiling all my sad soul into smiling察Straight I

wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird and bust and door察Then察upon

the velvet sinking察I betook myself to linking Fancy unto fancy察thinking

what this ominous bird of yore What this grim察ungainly察ghastly察gaunt察

and ominous bird of yoreMeant in croaking ;Nevermore。;

     This I sat engaged in guessing察but no syllable expressing To the fowl

whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom's core察This and more I sat

divining察with my head at ease reclining On the cushion's velvet lining that

the lamp´light gloated o'er察But whose velvet violet lining with the lamp´

light gloating o'erShe shall press察ah察nevermore

     Then察methought察the air grew denser察perfumed from an unseen censer

Swung by Seraphim whose foot´falls tinkled on the tufted floor。 ;Wretch察─

I cried察 thy God hath lent theeby these angels he hath sent thee Respite´

´respite and nepenthe from thy memories of Lenore Quaff察oh quaff this

kind nepenthe and forget this lost Lenore Quoth the Raven察

;Nevermore。;

     ;Prophet ─ said I察 thing of evilprophet still察 if bird or devil

Whether Tempter sent察 or whether tempest tossed thee here ashore察

Desolate察yet all undaunted察on this desert land enchanted On this home

by Horror hauntedtell me truly察 I implore Is thereis there balm in

Gileadtell metell me察I implore Quoth the Raven察 Nevermore。;

     ;Prophet ─said I察 thing of evilprophet still察if bird or devil By that

Heaven that bends above usby that God we both adore Tell this soul

with sorrow laden if察 within the distant Aidenn察 It shall clasp a sainted

maiden whom the angels name Lenore Clasp a rare and radiant maiden

whom the angels name Lenore。;Quoth the Raven察 Nevermore。;

     ;Be that our sign of parting察 bird or fiend ─ I shrieked察 upstarting

;Get thee back into the tempest and the Night's Plutonian shore Leave no

black plume as a token of that lie thy soul has spoken Leave my

loneliness unbrokenquit the bust above my door Take thy beak from

out my heart察 and take thy form from off my door Quoth the Raven察

;Nevermore。;

     And the Raven察 never flitting察 still is sitting察 still is sitting On the

pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door察And his eyes have all

the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming And the lamp´light o'er him

streaming throws his shadows on the floor察And my soul from out that

shadow that lies floating on the floorShall be liftednevermore

             The Masque of the Red Death

        The ;Red Death; had long devastated the country。 No pestilence

had ever been so fatal察or so hideous。 Blood was its Avatar and its seal

the redness and the horror of blood。 There were sharp pains察and sudden

dizziness察and then profuse bleeding at the pores察with dissolution。 The

scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim察

were the pest ban which shut him out from the aid and from the sympathy

of his fellow´men。 And the whole seizure察progress and termination of

the disease察were the incidents of half an hour。

     But the Prince Prospero was happy and dauntless and sagacious。

When his dominions were half depopulated察he summoned to his presence
