a。 Jaguar it is not察nor monkey此it is unlike any sound they know察and why should it follow them拭 However察they are in the land of wonders察and察moreover察the gold train is far more important than any noise。
At last察up from beneath there was a sharp crack and a loud cry。 The crack was neither the snapping of a branch察nor the tapping of a woodpecker察the cry was neither the scream of the parrot察nor the howl of the monkey。
;That was a whip's crack察─said Yeo察 and a woman's wail。 They are close here察lads
;A woman's拭 Do they drive women in their gangs拭─asked Amyas。
;Why not察the brutes拭 There they are察sir。 Did you see their basnets glitter拭
;Men ─said Amyas察in a low voice察 I trust you all not to shoot till I do。 Then give them one arrow察out swords察and at them Pass the word along。;
Up they came察slowly察and all hearts beat loud at their coming。
First察about twenty soldiers察only one´half of whom were on foot察the other half being borne察incredible as it may seem察each in a chair on the back of a single Indian察while those who marched had consigned their heaviest armor and their arquebuses into the hands of attendant slaves察who were each pricked on at will by the pike of the soldier behind them。
;The men are mad to let their ordnance out of their hands。;
;Oh察sir察an Indian will pray to an arquebus not to shoot him察he sure their artillery is safe enough察─said Yeo。
;Look at the proud villains察─whispered another察 to make dumb beasts of human creatures like that
;Ten shot察─counted the business´like Amyas察 and ten pikes察Will can tackle them up above。;
Last of this troop came some inferior officer察also in his chair察who察as he went slowly up the hill察with his face turned toward the gang which followed察drew every other second the cigar from his lips察to inspirit them with those pious ejaculations to the various objects of his worship察divine察human察anatomic察wooden and textile察which earned for the pious Spaniards of the sixteenth century the uncharitable imputation of being at once the most fetish´ridden idolaters and the most abominable swearers of all Europeans。
;The blasphemous dog ─said Yeo察fumbling at his bow´string察as if he longed to send an arrow through him。 But Amyas had hardly laid his finger on the impatient veteran's arm察when another procession followed察which made them forget all else。
A sad and hideous sight it was此yet one too common even then in those remoter districts察where the humane edicts were disregarded which the prayers of Dominican friars to their everlasting honor be it spoken had wrung from the Spanish sovereigns察and which the legislation of that most wise察virtuous察and heroic Inquisitor paradoxical as the words may seem察Pedro de la Gasca察had carried into effect in Perufutile and tardy alleviations of cruelties and miseries unexampled in the history of Christendom察or perhaps on earth察save in the conquests of Sennacherib and Zingis Khan。 But on the frontiers察where negroes were imported to endure the toil which was found fatal to the Indian察and all Indian tribes convicted or suspected of cannibalism were hunted down for the salvation of their souls and the enslavement of their bodies察such scenes as these were still too common察and察indeed察if we are to judge from Humboldt's impartial account察were not very much amended even at the close of the last century察in those much´boasted Jesuit missions in which as many of them as existed anywhere but on paper military tyranny was superadded to monastic察and the Gospel preached with fire and sword察almost as shamelessly as by the first Conquistadores。
A line of Indians察Negroes察and Zambos察naked察emaciated察scarred with whips and fetters察and chained together by their left wrists察toiled upwards察panting and perspiring under the burden of a basket held up by a strap which passed across their foreheads。 Yeo's sneer was but too just察there were not only old men and youths among them察but women察slender young girls察mothers with children察running at their knee察and察at the sight察a low murmur of indignation rose from the ambushed Englishmen察worthy of the free and righteous hearts of those days察when Raleigh could appeal to man and God察on the ground of a common humanity察in behalf of the outraged heathens of the New World察when Englishmen still knew that man was man察and that the instinct of freedom was the righteous voice of God察ere the hapless seventeenth century had brutalized them also察by bestowing on them察amid a hundred other bad legacies察the fatal gift of negro´slaves。
But the first forty察so Amyas counted察bore on their backs a burden which made all察perhaps察but him and Yeo察forget even the wretches who bore it。 Each basket contained a square package of carefully corded hide察the look whereof friend Amyas knew full well。
;What's in they察captain拭
;Gold ─ And at that magic word all eyes were strained greedily forward察and such a rustle followed察that Amyas察in the very face of detection察had to whisper
;Be men察be men察or you will spoil all yet
The last twenty察or so察of the Indians bore larger baskets察but more lightly freighted察seemingly with manioc察and maize´bread察and other food for the party察and after them came察with their bearers and attendants察just twenty soldiers more察followed by the officer in charge察who smiled away in his chair察and twirled two huge mustachios察thinking of nothing less than of the English arrows which were itching to be away and through his ribs。 The ambush was complete察the only question how and when to begin
Amyas had a shrinking察which all will understand察from drawing bow in cool blood on men so utterly unsuspicious and defenceless察even though in the very act of devilish crueltyfor devilish cruelty it was察as three or four drivers armed with whips lingered up and down the slowly staggering file of Indians察and avenged every moment's lagging察even every stumble察by a blow of the cruel manati´hide察which cracked like a pistol´shot against the naked limbs of the silent and uncomplaining victim。
Suddenly the casus belli察as usually happens察arose of its own accord。
The last but one of the chained line was an old gray´headed man察followed by a slender graceful girl of some eighteen years old察and Amyas's heart yearned over them as they came up。 Just as they passed察the foremost of the file had rounded the corner above察there was a bustle察and a voice shouted察 Halt察senors there is a tree across the path
;A tree across the path拭─bellowed the officer察with a variety of passionate addresses to the Mother of Heaven察the fiends of hell察Saint Jago of Compostella察and various other personages察while the line of trembling Indians察told to halt above察and driven on by blows below察surged up and down upon the ruinous steps of the Indian road察until the poor old man fell grovelling on his face。
The officer leaped down察and hurried upward to see what had happened。 Of course察he came across the old man。
;Sin peccado concebida Grandfather of Beelzebub察is this a place to lie worshipping your fiends拭─and he pricked the prostrate wretch with the point of his sword。
The old man tried to rise此but the weight on his head was too much for him察he fell again察and lay motionless。
The driver applied the manati´hide across his loins察once察twice察with fearful force察but even that specific was useless。
;Gastado察Senor Capitan察─said he察with a shrug。 ;Used up。 He has been failing these three months
;What does the intendant mean by sending me out with worn´out cattle like these拭 Forward there ─shouted he。 ;Clear away the tree察senors察and I'll soon clear the chain。 Hold it up察Pedrillo
The driver held up the chain察which was fastened to the old man's wrist。 The officer stepped back察and flourished round his head a Toledo blade察whose beauty made Amyas break the Tenth Commandment on the spot。
The man was a tall察handsome察broad´shouldered察high´bred man察and Amyas thought that he was going to display the strength of his arm察and the temper of his blade察in severing the chain at one stroke。
Even he was not prepared for the recondite fancies of a Spanish adventurer察worthy son or nephew of those first conquerors察who used to try the keenness of their swords upon the living bodies of Indians察and regale themselves at meals with the odor of roasting caciques。
The blade gleamed in the air察once察twice察and fell此not on the chain察but on the wrist which it fettered。 There was a shrieka crimson flashand the chain and its prisoner were parted indeed。
One moment more察and Amyas's arrow would have been through the throat of the murderer察who paused察regarding his workmanship with a satisfied smile察but vengeance was not to come from him。
Quick and fierce as a tiger´cat察the girl sprang on the ruffian察and with the intense strength of passion察clasped him in her arms察and leaped with him from the narrow ledge into the abyss below。
There was a rush察a shout察all faces were bent over the precipice。 The girl hung by her chained wrist此the officer was gone。 There was a moment's awful silence察and then Amyas heard his body crashing through the tree´tops far below。
;Haul her up He
