upon you察ever watchful察never weary。 You remember that at His coming

the whole earth will shake into one ruined graveyard察 the cold察 bright

angels will drive you this way and that察 and there will be no time to

explain what could be explained so simply。。。But to´night it seemed to

Linda there was something infinitely joyful and loving in those silver

beams。 And now no sound came from the sea。 It breathed softly as if it

would draw that tender察joyful beauty into its own bosom。

     ;It's all wrong察it's all wrong察─came the shadowy voice of Jonathan。

;It's not the scene察it's not the setting for。。。three stools察three desks察three

inkpots and a wire blind。;

     Linda knew that he would never change察but she said察 Is it too late察

even now拭─

     ;I'm oldI'm old察─intoned Jonathan。             He bent towards her察he passed

his hand over his head。 ;Look ─ His black hair was speckled all over

with silver察like the breast plumage of a black fowl。

     Linda was surprised。 She had no idea that he was grey。 And yet察as

he stood up beside her and sighed and stretched察she saw him察for the first

time察not resolute察not gallant察not careless察but touched already with age。

He looked very tall on the darkening grass察 and the thought crossed her

mind察 He is like a weed。;

     Jonathan stooped again and kissed her fingers。

     ;Heaven reward thy sweet patience察 lady mine察─ he murmured。 ;I

must go seek those heirs to my fame and fortune。。。; He was gone。

                                     Chapter 1。XI。

     Light shone in the windows of the bungalow。 Two square patches of

gold fell upon the pinks and the peaked marigolds。 Florrie察the cat察came

out on to the veranda察 and sat on the top step察 her white paws close

together察 her tail curled round。 She looked content察 as though she had

been waiting for this moment all day。

     ;Thank goodness察 it's getting late察─ said Florrie。 ;Thank goodness察

the long day is over。; Her greengage eyes opened。

     Presently there sounded the rumble of the coach察the crack of Kelly's

whip。 It came near enough for one to hear the voices of the men from

town察talking loudly together。 It stopped at the Burnells' gate。

     Stanley was half´way up the path before he saw Linda。 ;Is that you察

darling拭─

     ;Yes察Stanley。;

     He leapt across the flower´bed and seized her in his arms。 She was

enfolded in that familiar察eager察strong embrace。

     ;Forgive me察darling察forgive me察─stammered Stanley察and he put his

hand under her chin and lifted her face to him。

     ;Forgive you拭─smiled Linda。           ;But whatever for拭─

     ;Good God        You can't have forgotten察─cried Stanley Burnell。              ;I've

thought of nothing else all day。 I've had the hell of a day。 I made up my

mind to dash out and telegraph察and then I thought the wire mightn't reach

you before I did。      I've been in tortures察Linda。;

     ;But察Stanley察─said Linda察 what must I forgive you for拭─

     ;Linda Stanley was very hurt;didn't you realizeyou must have

realizedI went away without saying good´bye to you this morning拭 I

can't imagine how I can have done such a thing。 My confounded temper察

of course。 Butwell;and he sighed and took her in his arms again

;I've suffered for it enough to´day。;

     ;What's that you've got in your hand拭─asked Linda。 ;New gloves拭

Let me see。;

     ;Oh察just a cheap pair of wash´leather ones察─said Stanley humbly。                   ;I

noticed Bell was wearing some in the coach this morning察 so察 as I was

passing the shop察 I dashed in and got myself a pair。 What are you

smiling at拭 You don't think it was wrong of me察do you拭─

     ;On the con´trary察darling察─said Linda察 I think it was most sensible。;

     She pulled one of the large察pale gloves on her own fingers and looked

at her hand察turning it this way and that。 She was still smiling。

     Stanley wanted to say察 I was thinking of you the whole time I bought

them。; It was true察but for some reason he couldn't say it。 ;Let's go in察─

said he。

                                    Chapter 1。XII。

     Why does one feel so different at night拭 Why is it so exciting to be

awake when everybody else is asleep拭 Lateit is very late And yet

every moment you feel more and more wakeful察 as though you were

slowly察 almost with every breath察 waking up into a new察 wonderful察 far

more thrilling and exciting world than the daylight one。 And what is this

queer sensation that you're a conspirator拭 Lightly察 stealthily you move

about your room。 You take something off the dressing´table and put it

down again without a sound。 And everything察even the bed´post察knows

you察responds察shares your secret。。。

     You're not very fond of your room by day。 You never think about it。

You're in and out察the door opens and slams察the cupboard creaks。 You sit

down on the side of your bed察change your shoes and dash out again。 A

dive down to the glass察two pins in your hair察powder your nose and off

again。     But   nowit's   suddenly   dear   to   you。     It's   a   darling   little   funny

room。 It's yours。 Oh察what a joy it is to own things Minemy own

     ;My very own for ever拭─

     ;Yes。;     Their lips met。

     No察of course察that had nothing to do with it。 That was all nonsense

and rubbish。 But察 in spite of herself察 Beryl saw so plainly two people

standing in the middle of her room。 Her arms were round his neck察he

held her。 And now he whispered察 My beauty察 my little beauty ─ She

jumped off her bed察ran over to the window and kneeled on the window´

seat察 with her elbows on the sill。 But the beautiful night察 the garden察

every bush察 every leaf察 even the white palings察 even the stars察 were

conspirators too。 So bright was the moon that the flowers were bright as

by day察the shadow of the nasturtiums察exquisite lily´like leaves and wide´

open flowers察lay across the silvery veranda。 The manuka´tree察bent by

the southerly winds察was like a bird on one leg stretching out a wing。

     But when Beryl looked at the bush察it seemed to her the bush was sad。

     ;We are dumb trees察reaching up in the night察imploring we know not

what察─said the sorrowful bush。

     It is true when you are by yourself and you think about life察 it is

always sad。 All that excitement and so on has a way of suddenly leaving

you察 and it's as though察 in the silence察 somebody called your name察 and

you heard your name for the first time。 ;Beryl ─

     ;Yes察I'm here。      I'm Beryl。      Who wants me拭─

     ;Beryl ─

     ;Let me come。;

     It is lonely living by oneself。 Of course察there are relations察friends察

heaps of them察but that's not what she means。 She wants some one who

will find the Beryl they none of them know察who will expect her to be that

Beryl always。       She wants a lover。

     ;Take me away from all these other people察my love。 Let us go far

away。 Let us live our life察 all new察 all ours察 from the very beginning。

Let us make our fire。 Let us sit down to eat together。 Let us have long

talks at night。;

     And the thought was almost察 Save me察my love。 Save me ─

     。。。;Oh察go on Don't be a prude察my dear。 You enjoy yourself while

you're   young。      That's   my   advice。;      And   a   high   rush   of   silly   laughter

joined Mrs。 Harry Kember's loud察indifferent neigh。

     You see察it's so frightfully difficult when you've nobody。
