but Theseus frowned察and said under his breath察'No wonder that the land
is full of robbers察while such as these bear rule。'
Then the Pallantids saw him察and called to him察half´drunk with wine察
'Holla察tall stranger at the door察what is your will to´day'
'I come hither to ask for hospitality。'
'Then take it察and welcome。 You look like a hero and a bold warrior察
and we like such to drink with us。'
'I ask no hospitality of you察I ask it of AEgeus the king察 the master of
this house。'
At that some growled察and some laughed察and shouted察'Heyday we
are all masters here。'
'Then I am master as much as the rest of you' said Theseus察 and he
strode past the table up the hall察and looked around for AEgeus察but he
was nowhere to be seen。
The Pallantids looked at him察 and then at each other察 and each
whispered to the man next him察'This is a forward fellow察he ought to be
thrust out at the door。' But each man's neighbour whispered in return察
'His shoulders are broad察will you rise and put him out' So they all sat
still where they were。
Then Theseus called to the servants察and said察'Go tell King AEgeus察
your master察that Theseus of Troezene is here察and asks to be his guest
awhile。'
A servant ran and told AEgeus察where he sat in his chamber within察
by Medeia the dark witch´woman察 watching her eye and hand。 And
when AEgeus heard of Troezene he turned pale and red again察and rose
from his seat trembling察while Medeia watched him like a snake。
'What is Troezene to you' she asked。 But he said hastily察 'Do you
not know who this Theseus is拭 The hero who has cleared the country
from all monsters察but that he came from Troezene察I never heard before。
I must go out and welcome him。'
So AEgeus came out into the hall察and when Theseus saw him察 his
heart leapt into his mouth察 and he longed to fall on his neck and
welcome him察 but he controlled himself察 and said察 'My father may not
wish for me察after all。 I will try him before I discover myself' and he

bowed low before AEgeus察 and said察'I have delivered the king's realm
from many monsters察therefore I am come to ask a reward of the king。'
And old AEgeus looked on him察and loved him察as what fond heart
would not have done拭 But he only sighed察and said ´
'It is little that I can give you察noble lad察and nothing that is worthy
of you察for surely you are no mortal man察or at least no mortal's son。'
'All I ask' said Theseus察'is to eat and drink at your table。'
'That I can give you' said AEgeus察'if at least I am master in my own
hall。'
Then he bade them put a seat for Theseus察 and set before him the
best of the feast察and Theseus sat and ate so much察that all the company
wondered at him此 but always he kept his club by his side。
But Medeia the dark witch´woman had been watching him all the
while。 She saw how AEgeus turned red and pale when the lad said that
he came from Troezene。 She saw察 too察 how his heart was opened
toward Theseus察 and how Theseus bore himself before all the sons of
Pallas察like a lion among a pack of curs。 And she said to herself察'This
youth will be master here察perhaps he is nearer to AEgeus already than
mere fancy。 At least the Pallantilds will have no chance by the side of
such as he。'
Then she went back into her chamber modestly察 while Theseus ate
and drank察 and all the servants whispered察 'This察 then察 is the man who
killed the monsters How noble are his looks察 and how huge his size
Ah察would that he were our master's son'
But presently Medeia came forth察decked in all her jewels察 and her
rich Eastern robes察and looking more beautiful than the day察so that all
the guests could look at nothing else。 And in her right hand she held a
golden cup察and in her left a flask of gold察and she came up to Theseus察
and spoke in a sweet察soft察winning voice ´
'Hail to the hero察the conqueror察the unconquered察the destroyer of all
evil things Drink察 hero察 of my charmed cup察 which gives rest after
every toil察 which heals all wounds察 and pours new life into the veins。
Drink of my cup察 for in it sparkles the wine of the East察and Nepenthe察
the comfort of the Immortals。'

And as she spoke察 she poured the flask into the cup察 and the
fragrance of the wine spread through the hall察 like the scent of thyme
and roses。
And Theseus looked up in her fair face and into her deep dark eyes。
And as he looked察he shrank and shuddered察for they were dry like the
eyes of a snake。 And he rose察and said察 'The wine is rich and fragrant察
and the wine´bearer as fair as the Immortals察but let her pledge me first
herself in the cup察that the wine may be the sweeter from her lips。'
Then Medeia turned pale察and stammered察'Forgive me察fair hero察but
I am ill察and dare drink no wine。'
And Theseus looked again into her eyes察 and cried察 'Thou shalt
pledge me in that cup察or die。' And he lifted up his brazen club察while
all the guests looked on aghast。
Medeia shrieked a fearful shriek察and dashed the cup to the ground察
and fled察 and where the wine flowed over the marble pavement察 the
stone bubbled察and crumbled察and hissed察under the fierce venom of the
draught。
But Medeia called her dragon chariot察 and sprang into it and fled
aloft察away over land and sea察and no man saw her more。
And AEgeus cried察'What hast thou done' But Theseus pointed to
the stone察'I have rid the land of an enchantment此 now I will rid it of
one more。'
And he came close to AEgeus察and drew from his bosom the sword
and the sandals察and said the words which his mother bade him。
And AEgeus stepped back a pace察and looked at the lad till his eyes
grew dim察and then he cast himself on his neck and wept察and Theseus
wept on his neck察till they had no strength left to weep more。
Then AEgeus turned to all the people察 and cried察 'Behold my son察
children of Cecrops察a better man than his father was before him。'
Who察then察were mad but the Pallantids察though they had been mad
enough before拭 And one shouted察'Shall we make room for an upstart察
a pretender察who comes from we know not where' And another察'If he
be one察we are more than one察and the stronger can hold his own。' And
one shouted one thing察and one another察for they were hot and wild with

wine此 but all caught swords and lances off the wall察where the weapons
hung around察 and sprang forward to Theseus察 and Theseus sprang
forward to them。
And he cried察'Go in peace察if you will察my cousins察but if not察your
blood be on your own heads。' But they rushed at him察and then stopped
short and railed him察as curs stop and bark when they rouse a lion from
his lair。
But one hurled a lance from the rear rank察 which past close by
Theseus' head察and at that Theseus rushed forward察and the fight began
indeed。 Twenty against one they fought察and yet Theseus beat them all察
