was the sea always察 and Salamis察 with its island cliffs察 and the sacred
strait of the sea´fight察 where afterwards the Persians fled before the
Greeks。 So he went all day until the evening察 till he saw the Thriasian
plain察 and the sacred city of Eleusis察 where the Earth´mother's temple
stands。 For there she met Triptolemus察 when all the land lay waste察
Demeter the kind Earth´mother察and in her hands a sheaf of corn。 And
she taught him to plough the fallows察and to yoke the lazy kine察 and
she taught him to sow the seed´fields察and to reap the golden grain察and
sent him forth to teach all nations察and give corn to labouring men。 So
at Eleusis all men honour her察 whosoever tills the land察 her and
Triptolemus her beloved察who gave corn to labouring men。
And he went along the plain into Eleusis察and stood in the market´
place察and cried ´
'Where is Kerkuon察the king of the city拭 I must wrestle a fall with
him to´day。'
Then all the people crowded round him察and cried察'Fair youth察why
will you die拭 Hasten out of the city察before the cruel king hears that a
stranger is here。'

But Theseus went up through the town察while the people wept and
prayed察and through the gates of the palace´yard察and through the piles
of bones and skulls察till he came to the door of Kerkuon's hall察the terror
of all mortal men。
And there he saw Kerkuon sitting at the table in the hall alone察and
before him was a whole sheep roasted察 and beside him a whole jar of
wine。 And Theseus stood and called him察 'Holla察thou valiant wrestler察
wilt thou wrestle a fall to´ day'
And Kerkuon looked up and laughed察and answered察'I will wrestle a
fall to´day察 but come in察 for I am lonely and thou weary察 and eat and
drink before thou die。'
Then Theseus went up boldly察and sat down before Kerkuon at the
board察 and he ate his fill of the sheep's flesh察 and drank his fill of the
wine察and Theseus ate enough for three men察but Kerkuon ate enough for
seven。
But neither spoke a word to the other察though they looked across the
table by stealth察and each said in his heart察'He has broad shoulders察but I
trust mine are as broad as his。'
At last察 when the sheep was eaten and the jar of wine drained dry察
King Kerkuon rose察and cried察'Let us wrestle a fall before we sleep。'
So they tossed off all their garments察and went forth in the palace´
yard察and Kerkuon bade strew fresh sand in an open space between the
bones。
And there the heroes stood face to face察while their eyes glared like
wild bulls'察 and all the people crowded at the gates to see what would
befall。
And there they stood and wrestled察till the stars shone out above their
heads察up and down and round察till the sand was stamped hard beneath
their feet。 And their eyes flashed like stars in the darkness察 and their
breath went up like smoke in the night air察but neither took nor gave a
footstep察and the people watched silent at the gates。
But at last Kerkuon grew angry察and caught Theseus round the neck察
and shook him as a mastiff shakes a rat察but he could not shake him off
his feet。

But Theseus was quick and wary察 and clasped Kerkuon round the
waist察and slipped his loin quickly underneath him察while he caught him
by the wrist察 and then he hove a mighty heave察 a heave which would
have stirred an oak察and lifted Kerkuon察 and pitched him right over his
shoulder on the ground。
Then he leapt on him察and called察'Yield察or I kill thee' but Kerkuon
said no word察for his heart was burst within him with the fall察and the
meat察and the wine。
Then Theseus opened the gates察and called in all the people察 and they
cried察'You have slain our evil king察be you now our king察 and rule us
well。'
'I will be your king in Eleusis察and I will rule you right and well察for
this cause I have slain all evil´doers ´ Sinis察 and Sciron察and this man last
of all。'
Then an aged man stepped forth察 and said察 'Young hero察 hast thou
slain Sinis拭 Beware then of AEgeus察 king of Athens察 to whom thou
goest察for he is near of kin to Sinis。'
'Then I have slain my own kinsman' said Theseus察'though well he
deserved to die。 Who will purge me from his death察 for rightfully I
slew him察unrighteous and accursed as he was'
And the old man answered ´
'That will the heroes do察the sons of Phytalus察who dwell beneath the
elm´tree in Aphidnai察by the bank of silver Cephisus察for they know the
mysteries of the Gods。 Thither you shall go and be purified察and after
you shall be our king。'
So he took an oath of the people of Eleusis察that they would serve
him as their king察 and went away next morning across the Thriasian
plain察and over the hills toward Aphidnai察that he might find the sons of
Phytalus。
And as he was skirting the Vale of Cephisus察along the foot of lofty
Parnes察a very tall and strong man came down to meet him察dressed in
rich garments。 On his arms were golden bracelets察and round his neck
a collar of jewels察and he came forward察bowing courteously察and held
out both his hands察and spoke ´

'Welcome察 fair youth察 to these mountains察 happy am I to have met
you For what greater pleasure to a good man察 than to entertain
strangers拭 But I see that you are weary。 Come up to my castle察and
rest yourself awhile。'
'I give you thanks' said Theseus此 'but I am in haste to go up the
valley察and to reach Aphidnai in the Vale of Cephisus。'
'Alas you have wandered far from the right way察 and you cannot
reach Aphidnai to´night察for there are many miles of mountain between
you and it察and steep passes察and cliffs dangerous after nightfall。 It is
well for you that I met you察for my whole joy is to find strangers察and to
feast them at my castle察 and hear tales from them of foreign lands。
Come up with me察 and eat the best of venison察 and drink the rich red
wine察 and sleep upon my famous bed察 of which all travellers say that
they never saw the like。 For whatsoever the stature of my guest察
however tall or short察that bed fits him to a hair察and he sleeps on it as he
never slept before。' And he laid hold on Theseus' hands察and would not
let him go。
Theseus wished to go forwards此 but he was ashamed to seem
churlish to so hospitable a man察and he was curious to see that wondrous
bed察and beside察he was hungry and weary此 yet he shrank from the man察
he knew not why察for察though his voice was gentle and fawning察it was
dry and husky like a toad's察and though his eyes were gentle察they were
dull and cold like stones。 But he consented察and went with the man up
a glen which led from the road toward the peaks of Parnes察 under the
dark shadow of the cliffs。
And as they went up察the glen grew narrower察and the cliffs higher
and darker察 and beneath them a torrent roared察 half
