Piscator。 Marry察 and I am glad of it此 I am like to have a towardly
scholar of you。 I now see察that with advice and practice察you will make an
Angler in a short time。 Have but a love to it察and I'll warrant you。
Venator。 But察master what if I could not have found a grasshopper拭
Piscator。 Then I may tell you察That a black snail察with his belly slit察to
show his white察 or a piece of soft cheese察 will usually do as well。 Nay察
sometimes a worm察or any kind of fly察as the ant´fly察the flesh´fly察or wall´
fly察 or the dor or beetle which you may find under cow´dung察 or a bob
which you will find in the same place察and in time will be a beetle察it is a
short white worm察like to and bigger than a gentle察or a cod´ worm察or a
case´worm察any of these will do very well to fish in such a manner。
And after this manner you may catch a Trout in a hot evening此when察
as you walk by a brook察and shall see or hear him leap at flies察then察if you
get a grasshopper察put it on your hook察with your line about two yards long察
standing behind a bush or tree where his hole is此and make your bait stir
up and down on the top of the water。 You may察if you stand close察be sure
of a bite察but not sure to catch him察for he is not a leather´ mouthed fish。
And after this manner you may fish for him with almost any kind of live
fly察but especially with a grasshopper。
Venator。 But before you go further察 I pray察 good master察 what mean
you by a leather´mouthed fish 拭
Piscator。 By a leather´mouthed fish察I mean such as have their teeth in
their throat察as the Chub or Cheven此and so the Barbel察the Gudgeon察and
Carp察and divers others have。 And the hook being stuck into the leather察or
skin察of the mouth of such fish察does very seldom or never lose its hold此

but on the contrary察 a Pike察 a Perch察 or Trout察 and so some other fish察
which have not their teeth in their throats察but in their mouths察which you
shall observe to be very full of bones察and the skin very thin察and little of it。
I say察of these fish the hook never takes so sure hold but you often lose
your fish察unless he have gorged it。
Venator。 I thank you察good master察for this observation。 But now what
shall be done with my Chub or Cheven that I have caught 拭
Piscator。 Marry察Sir察it shall be given away to some poor body察for I'll
warrant you I'll give you a Trout for your supper此 and it is a good
beginning of your art to offer your first´fruits to the poor察who will both
thank you and God for it察which I see by your silence you seem to consent
to。 And for your willingness to part with it so charitably察I will also teach
more concerning Chub´fishing。 You are to note察that in March and April he
is usually taken with worms察in May察June察and July察he will bite at any fly察
or at cherries察or at beetles with their legs and wings cut off察or at any kind
of snail察or at the black bee that breeds in clay walls。 And he never refuses
a grasshopper察on the top of a swift stream察nor察at the bottom察the young
humble bee that breeds in long grass察and is ordinarily found by the mower
of it。 In August察 and in the cooler months察 a yellow paste察 made of the
strongest cheese察and pounded in a mortar察with a little butter and saffron察
so much of it as察being beaten small察will turn it to a lemon colour。 And
some make a paste for the winter months察 at which time the Chub is
accounted best察for then it is observed察that the forked bones are lost察or
turned into a kind of gristle察 especially if he be baked察 of cheese and
turpentine。 He will bite also at a minnow察 or peek察 as a Trout will此 of
which I shall tell you more hereafter察and of divers other baits。 But take
this for a rule察that察in hot weather察he is to be fished for towards the mid´
water察or near the top察and in colder weather察nearer the bottom察and if you
fish for him on the top察with a beetle察or any fly察then be sure to let your
line be very long察and to keep out of sight。 And having told you察that his
spawn is excellent meat察and that the head of a large Cheven察the throat
being well washed察is the best part of him察I will say no more of this fish at
the present察but wish you may catch the next you fish for。
But察 lest you may judge me too nice in urging to have the Chub

dressed so presently after he is taken察 I will commend to your
consideration how curious former times have been in the like kind。
You shall read in Seneca察his Natural Questions察that the ancients were
so curious in the newness of their fish察 that that semed not new enough
that was not put alive into the guest's hand察and he says察that to that end
they did usually keep them living in glass bottles in their dining´rooms察
and they did glory much in their entertaining of friends察to have that fish
taken from under their table alive that was instantly to be fed upon察and he
says察 they took great pleasure to see their Mullets change to several
colours when they were dying。 But enough of this察for I doubt I have staid
too long from giving you some Observations of the Trout察and how to fish
for him察which shall take up the next of my spare time。

On the Nature and Breeding of the Trout察and how to fish for him
Chapter IV
Piscator察Venator察Milk´woman察Maudlin察Hostess
Piscator。 The Trout is a fish highly valued察both in this and foreign
nations。 He may be justly said察 as the old poet said of wine察 and we
English say of venison察to be a generous fish此a fish that is so like the buck察
that he also has his seasons察for it is observed察that he comes in and goes
out of season with the stag and buck。 Gesner says察 his name is of a
German offspring察and says he is a fish that feeds clean and purely察in the
swiftest streams察and on the hardest gravel察and that he may justly contend
with all fresh water fish察 as the Mullet may with all sea fish察 for
precedency and daintiness of taste察and that being in right season察the most
dainty palates have allowed precedency to him。
And before I go farther in my discourse察let me tell you察that you are to
observe察 that as there be some barren does that are good in summer察 so
there be some barren Trouts that are good in winter察but there are not many
that are so察for usually they be in their perfection in the month of May察and
decline with the buck。 Now you are to take notice察that in several countries察
as in Germany察and in other parts察compared to ours察fish do differ much in
their bigness察 and shape察 and other ways察 and so do Trouts。 It is well
known that in the Lake Leman察the Lake of Geneva察there are Trouts taken
of three cubits long察as is affirmed by Gesner察a writer of good credit此and
Mercator says察the Trouts that are taken in the Lake of Geneva are a great
part of the merchandize of that famous city。 And you are further to know察
that there be certain waters that breed Trouts remarkable察 both for their
number and smallness。 I know a little brook in Kent察that breeds them to a
number incredible察and you may take them twenty or forty in an hour察but
none greater than about the size of a Gudgeon。 There are also察in divers
rivers察especially that relate to察or be near to the sea察as Winchester察or the

Thames about Windsor察a little Trout called a Samlet察or Skegger Trout察in
both which places I have caught twenty or forty at a standing察that will bite
as fast and as freely as Minnows此 these be by some taken to be young
Salmons察but in those waters they never grow to be bigger than a Herring。
There is also in Kent察 near to Canterbury察 a Trout called there a
Fordidge Trout察a Trout that bears the name of the town where it is usually
caught察that is accounted the rarest of fish察many of them near the bi
