voice these words察SIMON察SIMON察 sounded in mine ears。 I thought verily察as I have told you察that somebody had called after me察that was half a mile behind me此 and although that was not my name察yet it made me suddenly look behind me察believing that he that called so loud察meant me。
。 But so foolish was I察and ignorant察that I knew not the reason of this sound察。which as I did both see and feel soon after察was sent from heaven as an alarm察to awaken me to provide for what was coming撮 only I should muse and wonder in my mind察to think what should be the reason of this scripture察and that at this rate察so often and so loud察should still be sounding and rattling in mine ears此 but察as I said before察I soon after perceived the end of God therein。
。 For察about the space of a month after察a very great storm came down upon me察which handled me twenty times worse than all I had met with before察it came stealing upon me察now by one piece察then by another此 First察all my comfort was taken from me察then darkness seized upon me察after which察whole floods of blasphemies察both against God察Christ察and the scriptures察were poured upon my spirit察to my great confusion and astonishment。 These blasphemous thoughts were such as stirred up questions in me against the very being of God察and of His only beloved Son此 As察whether there were in truth察a God or Christ拭 And whether the holy scriptures were not rather a fable察and cunning story察than the holy and pure word of God
。 The tempter would also much assault me with this察HOW CAN YOU TELL BUT THAT THE Turks HAD AS GOOD SCRIPTURES TO PROVE THEIR Mahomet THE SAVIOUR察AS WE HAVE TO PROVE OUR JESUS IS拭 AND察COULD I THINK察THAT SO MANY TEN THOUSANDS察IN SO MANY COUNTRIES AND KINGDOMS察SHOULD BE WITHOUT THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE RIGHT WAY TO HEAVEN察。IF THERE WERE INDEED A HEAVEN察AND THAT WE ONLY察WHO LIVE IN A CORNER OF THE EARTH察SHOULD ALONE BE BLESSED THEREWITH拭 EVERY ONE DOTH THINK HIS OWN RELIGION RIGHTEST察BOTH Jews AND Moors察AND Pagans察AND HOW IF ALL OUR FAITH察AND CHRIST察AND SCRIPTURES察 SHOULD BE BUT A THINK SO TOO
。 Sometimes I have endeavoured to argue against these suggestions察and to set some of the sentences of blessed PAUL against them察but alas I quickly felt察when I thus did察such arguings as these would return again upon me察THOUGH WE MADE SO GREAT A MATTER OF PAUL察AND OF HIS WORDS察YET HOW COULD I TELL察BUT THAT IN VERY DEED察HE BEING A SUBTLE AND CUNNING MAN察MIGHT GIVE HIMSELF UP TO DECEIVE WITH STRONG DELUSIONS此 AND ALSO TAKE THE PAINS AND TRAVEL察TO UNDO AND DESTROY HIS FELLOWS。
。 These suggestions察。with many others which at this time I may not察and dare not utter察neither by word or pen撮 did make such a seizure upon my spirit察and did so overweigh my heart察both with their number察continuance察and fiery force察that I felt as if there were nothing else but these from morning to night within me察and as though indeed there could be room for nothing else察and also concluded察that God had察in very wrath to my soul察given me up to them察to be carried away with them察as with a mighty whirlwind。
。 Only by the distaste that they gave unto my spirit察I FELT THERE WAS SOMETHING IN ME THAT REFUSED TO EMBRACE THEM。 But this consideration I then only had察when God gave me leave to swallow my spittle察otherwise the noise察and strength察and force of these temptations would drown and overflow察and as it were察bury all such thoughts察or the remembrance of any such thing。 While I was in this temptation察I often found my mind suddenly put upon it to curse and swear察or to speak some grievous thing against God察or Christ His Son察and of the scriptures。
。 Now I thought察SURELY I AM POSSESSED OF THE DEVIL此 at other times察again察I thought I should be bereft of my wits察for instead of lauding and magnifying God the Lord察with others察if I have but heard Him spoken of察presently some most horrible blasphemous thought or other would bolt out of my heart against Him察so that whether I did think that God was察or again did think there was no such thing察no love察nor peace察nor gracious disposition could I feel within me。
。 These things did sink me into very deep despair察for I concluded that such things could not possibly be found amongst them that loved God。 I often察when these temptations had been with force upon me察did compare myself to the case of such a child察whom some gipsy hath by force took up in her arms察and is carrying from friend and country。 Kick sometimes I did察and also shriek and cry察 but yet I was bound in the wings of the temptation察and the wind would carry me away。 I thought also of Saul察and of the evil spirit that did possess him此 and did greatly fear that my condition was the same with that of his。 1 Sam。 x。
。 In these days察when I have heard others talk of what was the sin against the Holy Ghost察then would the tempter so provoke me to desire to sin that against sin察that I was as if I could not察must not察neither should be quiet until I had committed it察now no sin would serve but that。 If it were to be committed by speaking of such a word察then I have been as if my mouth would have spoken that word察whether I would or no察and in so strong a measure was this temptation upon me察that often I have been ready to clap my hand under my chin察to hold my mouth from opening察and to that end also察 I have had thoughts at other times察to leap with my head downward察 into some muckhill´hole or other察to keep my mouth from speaking。
。 Now again I beheld the condition of the dog and toad察and counted the estate of every thing that God had made察far better than this dreadful state of mine察and such as my companions were。 Yea察gladly would I have been in the condition of a dog or horse此 for I knew they had no souls to perish under the everlasting weight of hell察or sin察as mine was like to do。 Nay察and though I saw this察felt this察and was broken to pieces with it察yet that which added to my sorrow was察I could not find察that with all my soul I did desire deliverance。 That scripture did also tear and rend my soul in the midst of these distractions察THE WICKED ARE LIKE THE TROUBLED SEA察WHEN IT CANNOT REST察WHOSE WATERS CAST UP MIRE AND DIRT。 THERE IS NO PEACE察SAITH MY GOD察TO THE WICKED。 Isa。 lvii。 20察21。
。 And now my heart was察at times察exceeding hard察if I would have given a thousand pounds for a tear察I could not shed one此 no nor sometimes scarce desire to shed one。 I was much dejected察to think that this would be my lot。 I saw some could mourn and lament their sin察and others again察could rejoice and bless God for Christ察and others again察could quietly talk of察and with gladness remember the word of God察while I only was in the storm or tempest。 This much sunk me察I thought my condition was alone察I should therefore much bewail my hard hap察but get out of察or get rid of these things察I could not。
。 While this temptation lasted察which was about a year察I could attend upon none of the ordinances of God察but with sore and great affliction。 Yea察then I was most distressed with blasphemies。 If I had been hearing the word察then uncleanness察blasphemies and despair would hold me a captive there此 if I have been reading察 then sometimes I had sudden thoughts to question all I read此 sometimes again察my mind would be so strangely snatched away察and possessed with other things察that I have neither known察nor regarded察nor remembered so much as the sentence that but now I have read。
。 In prayer also I have been greatly troubled at this time察 sometimes I have thought I have felt him behind me pulling my clothes此 he would be also continually at me in time of prayer察to have done察break off察make haste察you have prayed enough察and stay no longer察still drawing my mind away。 Sometimes also he would cast in such wicked thoughts as these察that I must pray to him察or for him此 I have thought sometimes of that察FALL DOWN察or察IF THOU WILT FALL DOWN AND WORSHIP ME。 Matt。 iii。 9。
。 Also察when because I have had wandering thoughts in the time of this duty察I have laboured to compose my mind察and fix it upon God察then with great force hath the tempter laboured to distract me察and confound me察and to turn away my mind察by presenting to my heart and fancy察the form of a bush察a bull察a besom察or the like察 as if I should pray to these此 To these he would also at sometimes especially so hold my mind察that I was as if I could think of nothing else察or pray to nothing else but to these察or such as they。
。 Yet at times I should have some strong and heart´affecting apprehensions of God察and the reality of the truth of His gospel。 But察oh how would my heart察at such times察put forth itself with unexpressible groanings。 My whole soul was then in every word察I should cry with pangs after God察that He would be merciful unto me察 but then I should be daunted again with such conceits as these此 I should think that God did mock at these my prayers察saying察and that in the audience of the holy angels察THIS POOR SIMPLE WRETCH DOTH HANKER AFTER ME察AS IF I HAD NOTHING TO
