ty offered for the suing out of pardons。 Whereupon I continued in prison till the next assizes察which are called MIDSUMMER ASSIZES察being then kept in AUGUST察1661。
Now察at that assizes察because I would not leave any possible means unattempted that might be lawful察I did察by my wife察present a petition to the judges three times察that I might be heard察and that they would impartially take my case into consideration。
The first time my wife went察she presented it to Judge HALE察who very mildly received it at her hand察telling her that he would do her and me the best good he could察but he feared察he said察he could do none。 The next day察again察lest they should察through the multitude of business察forget me察we did throw another petition into the coach to Judge TWISDON察who察when he had seen it察snapt her up察and angrily told her that I was a convicted person察and could not be released察unless I would promise to preach no more察 etc。
Well察after this察she yet again presented another to judge Hale察as he sat on the bench察who察as it seemed察was willing to give her audience。 Only Justice CHESTER being present察stept up and said察 that I was convicted in the court察and that I was a hot´spirited fellow or words to that purpose察whereat he waived it察and did not meddle therewith。 But yet察my wife being encouraged by the high´sheriff察did venture once more into their presence as the poor widow did before the unjust judge to try what she could do with them for my liberty察before they went forth of the town。 The place where she went to them察was to the SWAN´CHAMBER察where the two judges察and many justices and gentry of the country察was in company together。 She then coming into the chamber with a bashed face察and a trembling heart察began her errand to them in this manner此
WOMAN。 My lord directing herself to judge Hale察I make bold to come once again to your Lordship察to know what may be done with my husband。
JUDGE HALE。 To whom he said察Woman察I told thee before I could do thee no good察because they have taken that for a conviction which thy husband spoke at the sessions此 and unless there be something done to undo that察I can do thee no good。
WOMAN。 My lord察said she察he is kept unlawfully in prison察they clapped him up before there was any proclamation against the meetings察the indictment also is false。 Besides察they never asked him whether he was guilty or no察neither did he confess the indictment。
ONE OF THE JUSTICES。 Then one of the justices that stood by察whom she knew not察said察My Lord察he was lawfully convicted。
WOM。 It is false察said she察for when they said to him察Do you confess the indictment拭he said only this察that he had been at several meetings察both where there were preaching the Word察and prayer察and that they had God's presence among them。
JUDGE TWISDON。 Whereat Judge TWISDON answered very angrily察 saying察What察you think we can do what we list察your husband is a breaker of the peace察and is convicted by the law察etc。 Whereupon Judge HALE called for the Statute Book。
WOM。 But察said she察my lord察he was not lawfully convicted。
CHESTER。 Then Justice CHESTER said察My lord察he was lawfully convicted。
WOM。 It is false察said she察it was but a word of discourse that they took for a conviction as you heard before。
CHEST。 But it is recorded察woman察it is recorded察said Justice CHESTER察as if it must be of necessity true察because it was recorded。 With which words he often endeavoured to stop her mouth察 having no other argument to convince her察but it is recorded察it is recorded。
WOM。 My Lord察said she察I was a while since at LONDON察to see if I could get my husband's liberty察and there I spoke with my lord BARKWOOD察one of the House of Lords察to whom I delivered a petition察who took it of me and presented it to some of the rest of the House of Lords察for my husband's releasement察who察when they had seen it察they said察that they could not release him察but had committed his releasement to the judges察at the next assizes。 This he told me察and now I am come to you to see if any thing may be done in this business察and you give neither releasement nor relief。 To which they gave her no answer察but made as if they heard her not。
CHEST。 Only Justice CHESTER was often up with this察 He is convicted察and it is recorded。
WOM。 If it be察it is false察said she。
CHEST。 My lord察said Justice CHESTER察he is a pestilent fellow察 there is not such a fellow in the country again。
TWIS。 What察will your husband leave preaching拭 If he will do so察 then send for him。
WOM。 My lord察said she察he dares not leave preaching as long as he can speak。
TWIS。 See here察what should we talk any more about such a fellow拭 Must he do what he lists拭 He is a breaker of the peace。
WOM。 She told him again察that he desired to live peaceably察and to follow his calling察that his family might be maintained察and moreover察said察My Lord察I have four small children察that cannot help themselves察one of which is blind察and have nothing to live upon察but the charity of good people。
HALE。 Hast thou four children拭said Judge Hale察thou art but a young woman to have four children。
WOM。 My lord察said she察I am but mother´in´law to them察having not been married to him yet full two years。 Indeed察I was with child when my husband was first apprehended察but being young察and unaccustomed to such things察said she察I being smayed at the news察 fell into labour察and so continued for eight days察and then was delivered察but my child died。
HALE。 Whereat察he looking very soberly on the matter察said察Alas察 poor woman
TWIS。 But Judge TWISDON told her察that she made poverty her cloak察 and said察moreover察that he understood I was maintained better by running up and down a preaching察than by following my calling。
HALE。 What is his calling拭said Judge Hale。
ANSWER。 Then some of the company that stood by察said察A tinker察my lord。
WOM。 Yes察said she察and because he is a tinker察and a poor man察 therefore he is despised察and cannot have justice。
HALE。 Then Judge HALE answered very mildly察saying察I tell thee察 woman察seeing it is so察that they have taken what thy husband spake for a conviction察thou must either apply thyself to the King察or sue out his pardon察or get a writ of error。
CHEST。 But when Justice CHESTER heard him give her this counsel察 and especially as she supposed because he spoke of a writ of error察he chafed察and seemed to be very much offended察saying察My lord察he will preach and do what he lists。
WOM。 He preacheth nothing but the Word of God察said she。
TWIS。 He preach the Word of God said Twisdon察and withal察she thought he would have struck her察he runneth up and down察and doth harm。
WOM。 No察my lord察said she察it is not so察God hath owned him察and done much good by him。
TWIS。 God said he察his doctrine is the doctrine of the devil。
WOM。 My lord察said she察when the righteous Judge shall appear察it will be known that his doctrine is not the doctrine of the devil。
TWIS。 My lord察said he察to Judge Hale察do not mind her察but send her away。
HALE。 Then said Judge Hale察I am sorry察woman察that I can do thee no good察thou must do one of those three things aforesaid察namely察 either to apply thyself to the King察or sue out his pardon察or get a writ of error察but a writ of error will be cheapest。
WOM。 At which Chester again seemed to be in a chafe察and put off his hat察and as she thought察scratched his head for anger此 but when I saw察said she察that there was no prevailing to have my husband sent for察though I often desired them that they would send for him察that he might speak for himself察telling them察that he could give them better satisfaction than I could察in what they demanded of him察with several other things察which now I forget察 only this I remember察that though I was somewhat timorous at my first entrance into the chamber察yet before I went out察I could not but break forth into tears察not so much because they were so hard´ hearted against me察and my husband察but to think what a sad account such poor creatures will have to give at the coming of the Lord察 when they shall there answer for all things whatsoever they have done in the body察whether it be good察or whether it be bad。
So察when I departed from them察the book of statutes was brought察 but what they said of it I know nothing at all察neither did I hear any more from them。
SOME CARRIAGES OF THE ADVERSARIES OF GOD'S TRUTH WITH ME AT THE NEXT ASSIZES察WHICH WAS ON THE 19TH OF THE FIRST MONTH察1662。
I SHALL pass by what befell between these two assizes察how I had察 by my jailor察some liberty granted me察more than at the first察and how I followed my wonted course of preaching察taking all occasions that were put into my hand to visit the people of God察exhorting them to be steadfast in the faith of Jesus Christ察and to take heed that they touched not the Common Prayer察etc。察but to mind the Word of God察which giveth direction to Christians in every point察being able to make the man of God perfect in all things through faith in Jesus Christ察and thoroughly to furnish
