ders察and should also labour察what I might with fairness察to aggravate and heighten their sins by several circumstances。
。 I should think with myself that DAVID shed blood to cover his adultery察and that by the sword of the children of AMMON察a work that could not be done察but by continuance察deliberate contrivance察 which was a great aggravation to his sin。 But then this would turn upon me此 Ah but these were but sins against the law察from which there was a Jesus sent to save them察but yours is a sin against the Saviour察and who shall save you from that
。 Then I thought on SOLOMON察and how he sinned in loving strange women察falling away to their idols察in building them temples察in doing this after light察in his old age察after great mercy received此 but the same conclusion that cut me off in the former consideration察cut me off as to this察namely察that all those were but sins against the law察for which God had provided a remedy察 BUT I HAD SOLD MY SAVIOUR察and there remained no more sacrifice for sin。
。 I would then add to these men's sins察the sins of MANASSEH察 how that he built altars for idols in the house of the Lord察he also observed times察used enchantments察had to do with wizards察was a wizard察had his familiar spirits察burned his children in the fire in sacrifice to devils察and made the streets of JERUSALEM run down with the blood of innocents。 These察thought I察are great sins察 sins of a bloody colour察but yet it would turn again upon me察THEY ARE NONE OF THEM OF THE NATURE OF YOURS察YOU HAVE PARTED WITH JESUS察YOU HAVE SOLD YOUR SAVIOUR。
。 This one consideration would always kill my heart察MY SIN WAS POINT BLANK AGAINST MY SAVIOUR察and that too察at that height察that I had in my heart said of Him察LET HIM GO察IF HE WILL。 Oh methought this sin was bigger than the sins of a country察of a kingdom察or of the whole world察NO one pardonable察nor ALL of them together察was able to equal mine察mine out´went them every one。
。 Now I should find my mind to flee from God察as from the face of a dreadful judge察yet this was my torment察I could not escape His hand此 。IT IS A FEARFUL THING TO FALL INTO THE HANDS OF THE LIVING GOD。 Hebrew x。 But察blessed be His grace察that scripture察 in these flying fits察would call察as running after me察I HAVE BLOTTED OUT察AS A THICK CLOUD察THY TRANSGRESSIONS察AND AS A CLOUD察 THY SINS此 RETURN UNTO ME察FOR I HAVE REDEEMED THEE。 Isaiah xliv。 22。 This察I say察would come in upon my mind察when I was fleeing from the face of God察for I did flee from His face察that is察my mind and spirit fled before Him察by reason of His highness察I could not endure此 then would the text cry察RETURN UNTO ME察it would cry aloud with a very great voice察RETURN UNTO ME察FOR I HAVE REDEEMED THEE。 Indeed察this would make me make a little stop察and察as it were察look over my shoulder behind me察to see if I could discern that the God of grace did follow me with a pardon in His hand察but I could no sooner do that察but all would be clouded and darkened again by that sentence察FOR YOU KNOW察HOW THAT AFTERWARDS察WHEN HE WOULD HAVE INHERITED THE BLESSING察HE FOUND NO PLACE OF REPENTANCE察 THOUGH HE SOUGHT IT CAREFULLY WITH TEARS。 Wherefore I could not refrain察but fled察though at some times it cried察RETURN察RETURN察 as if it did hollow after me此 but I feared to close in therewith察 lest it should not come from God察for that other察as I said察was still sounding in my conscience察FOR YOU KNOW THAT AFTERWARDS察WHEN HE WOULD HAVE INHERITED THE BLESSING察HE WAS REJECTED察ETC。
。 Once as I was walking to and fro in a good man's shop察 bemoaning of myself in my sad and doleful state察afflicting myself with self´abhorrence for this wicked and ungodly thought察lamenting also this hard hap of mine for that I should commit so great a sin察 greatly fearing that I should not be pardoned察praying also in my heart察that if this sin of mine did differ from that against the Holy Ghost察the Lord would show it me。 And being now ready to sink with fear察suddenly there was察as if there had rushed in at the window察the noise of wind upon me察but very pleasant察and as if I heard a voice speaking察DID'ST THOU EVER REFUSE TO BE JUSTIFIED BY THE BLOOD OF CHRIST拭and withal察my whole life of profession past察 was in a moment opened to me察wherein I was made to see察that designedly I had not此 so my heart answered groaningly察NO。 Then fell察with power察that word of God upon me察SEE THAT YE REFUSE NOT HIM THAT SPEAKETH。 Hebrew xii。 25。 This made a strange seizure upon my spirit察it brought light with it察and commanded a silence in my heart察of all those tumultuous thoughts察that did before use察 like masterless hell´hounds察to roar and bellow察and make an hideous noise within me。 It showed me also that Jesus Christ had yet a word of grace and mercy for me察that He had not察as I had feared察quite forsaken and cast off my soul察yea察this was a kind of chide for my proneness to desperation察a kind of threatening of me察if I did not察notwithstanding my sins察and the heinousness of them察venture my salvation upon the Son of God。 But as to my determining about this strange dispensation察what it was察I know not察or from whence it came察I know not察I have not yet in twenty years' time been able to make a judgment of it察I THOUGHT THEN WHAT HERE I SHOULD BE LOTH TO SPEAK。 But verily that sudden rushing wind was察as if an angel had come upon me察but both it察and the salutation察I will leave until the day of judgment此 only this I say察it commanded a great calm in my soul察it persuaded me there might be hope此 it showed me察as I thought察what the sin unpardonable was察and that my soul had yet the blessed privilege to flee to Jesus Christ for mercy。 But I say察concerning this dispensation察I know not yet what to say unto it察which was also察 in truth察the cause察that at first I did not speak of it in the book察I do now also leave it to be thought on by men of sound judgment。 I lay not the stress of my salvation thereupon察but upon the Lord Jesus察in the promise察yet seeing I am here unfolding of my secret things察I thought it might not be altogether inexpedient to let this also show itself察though I cannot now relate the matter as there I did experience it。 This lasted in the savour of it for about three or four days察and then I began to mistrust察and to despair again。
。 Wherefore still my life hung in doubt before me察not knowing which way I should tip察only this I found my soul desire察even to cast itself at the foot of grace察by prayer and supplication。 But oh 'twas hard for me now察to have the face to pray to this Christ for mercy察against Whom I had thus most vilely sinned此 'twas hard work察I say察to offer to look Him in the face察against Whom I had so vilely sinned察and indeed察I have found it as difficult to come to God by prayer察after backsliding from Him察as to do any other thing。 Oh the shame that did now attend me especially when I thought察I am now a´going to pray to Him for mercy察that I had so lightly esteemed but a while before I was ashamed察yea察even confounded察because this villany had been committed by me此 but I saw that there was but one way with me察I must go to Him察and humble myself unto Him察and beg that He察of His wonderful mercy察 would show pity to me察and have mercy upon my wretched sinful soul。
。 Which察when the tempter perceived察he strongly suggested to me察THAT I OUGHT NOT TO PRAY TO GOD察FOR PRAYER WAS NOT FOR ANY IN MY CASE察NEITHER COULD IT DO ME GOOD察BECAUSE I HAD REJECTED THE MEDIATOR察BY WHOM ALL PRAYERS CAME WITH ACCEPTANCE TO GOD THE FATHER察AND WITHOUT WHOM察NO PRAYER COULD COME INTO HIS PRESENCE此 WHEREFORE NOW TO PRAY察IS BUT TO ADD SIN TO SIN察YEA察NOW TO PRAY察 SEEING GOD HAS CAST YOU OFF察IS THE NEXT WAY TO ANGER AND OFFEND HIM MORE THAN YOU EVER DID BEFORE。
。 FOR GOD saith he HATH BEEN WEARY OF YOU FOR THESE SEVERAL YEARS ALREADY察BECAUSE YOU ARE NONE OF HIS察YOUR BAWLINGS IN HIS EARS察HATH BEEN NO PLEASANT VOICE TO HIM察AND THEREFORE HE LET YOU SIN THIS SIN察THAT YOU MIGHT BE QUITE CUT OFF察AND WILL YOU PRAY STILL拭 This the devil urged察and set forth that in NUMBERS察when MOSES said to the children OF ISRAEL察THAT BECAUSE THEY WOULD NOT GO UP TO POSSESS THE LAND察WHEN GOD WOULD HAVE THEM察THEREFORE FOR EVER AFTER HE DID BAR THEM OUT FROM THENCE察THOUGH THEY PRAYED THEY MIGHT WITH TEARS。 Numbers xiv。 36察37察etc。
。 As it is said in another place察Exodus xxi。 14察THE MAN THAT SINS PRESUMPTUOUSLY SHALL BE TAKEN FROM GOD'S ALTAR察THAT HE MAY DIE察even as JOAB was by King SOLOMON察when he thought to find shelter there。 1 Kings ii。 27察28察etc。 These places did pinch me very sore察yet my case being desperate察I thought with myself察I can but die察and if it must be so察it shall once be said察THAT SUCH AN ONE DIED AT THE FOOT OF CHRIST IN PRAYER。 This I did察but with great difficulty察God doth know察and that because察together with this察still that saying about ESAU would be set at my heart察even like a flaming sword察to keep the way of the tree of life察lest I should take thereof and live。 Oh who knows how hard a thing
