was thus tempted察I would say in myself察NOW I AM AT MEAT察LET ME MAKE AN END。 NO察said he察 YOU MUST DO IT NOW察OR YOU WILL DISPLEASE GOD察AND DESPISE CHRIST。 Wherefore I was much afflicted with these things察and because of the sinfulness of my nature imagining that these were impulses from God察I should deny to do it察as if I denied God察and then should I be as guilty察because I did not obey a temptation of the devil察as if I had broken the law of God indeed。

。 But to be brief此 one morning as I did lie in my bed察I was察 as at other times察most fiercely assaulted with this temptation察TO SELL AND PART WITH CHRIST察the wicked suggestion still running in my mind察SELL HIM察SELL HIM察SELL HIM察SELL HIM察SELL HIM察as fast as a man could speak此 against which also察in my mind察as at other times察I answered察NO察NO察NOT FOR THOUSANDS察THOUSANDS察THOUSANDS察 at least twenty times together此 but at last察after much striving察 even until I was almost out of breath察I felt this thought pass through my heart察LET HIM GO察IF HE WILL察and I thought also察that I felt my heart freely consent thereto。 Oh the diligence of Satan Oh the desperateness of man's heart

。 Now was the battle won察and down fell I as a bird that is shot from the top of a tree察into great guilt察and fearful despair。 Thus getting out of my bed察I went moping into the field察but God knows察with as heavy a heart as mortal man察I think察could bear察 where for the space of two hours察I was like a man bereft of life察 and察as now察past all recovery察and bound over to eternal punishment。

。 And withal察that scripture did seize upon my soul此 OR PROFANE PERSONS AS ESAU察WHO FOR ONE MORSEL OF MEAT察SOLD HIS BIRTHRIGHT此 FOR YE KNOW察HOW THAT AFTERWARD察WHEN HE WOULD HAVE INHERITED THE BLESSING察HE WAS REJECTED察FOR HE FOUND NO PLACE OF REPENTANCE察THOUGH HE SOUGHT IT CAREFULLY WITH TEARS。 Heb。 xii。 16察17。

。 Now was I as one bound察I felt myself shut up unto the judgment to come察nothing now察for two years together察would abide with me察but damnation察and an expectation of damnation此 I say察 nothing now would abide with me but this察save some few moments for relief察as in the sequel you will see。

。 These words were to my soul察like fetters of brass to my legs察in the continual sound of which I went for several months together。 But about ten or eleven o'clock on that day察as I was walking under an hedge full of sorrow and guilt察God knows察and bemoaning myself for this hard hap察that such a thought should arise within me察suddenly this sentence rushed in upon me察THE BLOOD OF CHRIST REMITS ALL GUILT。 At this I made a stand in my spirit此 with that this word took hold upon me察THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST HIS SON察CLEANSETH US FROM ALL SIN。 1 John i。 7。

。 Now I began to conceive peace in my soul察and methought I saw察as if the tempter did leer and steal away from me察as being ashamed of what he had done。 At the same time also I had my sin察 and the blood of Christ察thus represented to me察That my sin察when compared to the blood of Christ察was no more to it察than this little clod or stone before me察is to this vast and wide field that here I see。 This gave me good encouragement for the space of two or three hours察in which time also察methought察I saw察by faith察the Son of God察as suffering for my sins此 but because it tarried not察 I therefore sunk in my spirit察under exceeding guilt again。

。 But chiefly by the aforementioned scripture concerning ESAU'S selling of his birthright察for that scripture would lie all day long察all the week long察yea察all the year long in my mind察and hold me down察so that I could by no means lift up myself察for when I would strive to turn to this scripture or that察for relief察still that sentence would be sounding in me察FOR YE KNOW察HOW THAT AFTERWARDS察WHEN HE WOULD HAVE INHERITED THE BLESSING察HE FOUND NO PLACE OF REPENTANCE察THOUGH HE SOUGHT IT CAREFULLY WITH TEARS。

。 Sometimes察indeed察I should have a touch from that in Luke xxii。 31察I HAVE PRAYED FOR THEE THAT THY FAITH FAIL NOT察but it would not abide upon me察neither could I察indeed察when I considered my state察find ground to conceive in the least察that there should be the root of that grace in me察having sinned as I had done。 Now was I tore and rent in an heavy case for many days together。

。 Then began I with sad and careful heart to consider of the nature and largeness of my sin察and to search into the word of God察 if I could in any place espy a word of promise察or any encouraging sentence察by which I might take relief。 Wherefore I began to consider that of Mark iii。 28此 ALL SINS SHALL BE FORGIVEN UNTO THE SONS OF MEN察AND BLASPHEMIES WHEREWITH SOEVER THEY SHALL BLASPHEME。 Which place察methought at a blush察did contain a large and glorious promise for the pardon of high offences察but considering the place more fully察I thought it was rather to be understood察as relating more chiefly to those who had察while in a natural estate察committed such things as there are mentioned察but not to me察who had not only received light and mercy察but that had both after察and also contrary to that察so slighted Christ as I had done。

。 I feared察therefore察that this wicked sin of mine察might be that sin unpardonable察of which He there thus speaketh。 BUT HE THAT SHALL BLASPHEME AGAINST THE HOLY GHOST察HATH NEVER FORGIVENESS察BUT IS IN DANGER OF ETERNAL DAMNATION。 Mark iii。 29。 And I did the rather give credit to this察because of that sentence in the Hebrews此 FOR YOU KNOW HOW THAT AFTERWARDS察WHEN HE WOULD HAVE INHERITED THE BLESSING察HE WAS REJECTED察FOR HE FOUND NO PLACE OF REPENTANCE察THOUGH HE SOUGHT IT CAREFULLY WITH TEARS。 And this stuck always with me。

。 And now was I both a burthen and a terror to myself察nor did I ever so know察as now察what it was to be weary of my life察and yet afraid to die。 Oh how gladly now would I have been anybody but myself anything but a man察and in any condition but my own For there was nothing did pass more frequently over my mind察than that it was impossible for me to be forgiven my transgression察and to be saved from the wrath to come。

。 And now I began to call again time that was spent察wishing a thousand times twice told察that the day was yet to come when I should be tempted to such a sin察concluding with great indignation察 both against my heart察and all assaults察how I would rather have been torn in pieces察than be found a consenter thereto。 But alas these thoughts察and wishings察and resolvings were now too late to help me察this thought had passed my heart察God hath let me go察and I am fallen。 Oh thought I察THAT IT WERE WITH ME AS IN MONTHS PAST察AS IN THE DAYS WHEN GOD PRESERVED ME Job xxix。 2。

。 Then again察being loth and unwilling to perish察I began to compare my sin with others to see if I could find that any of those that were saved察had done as I had done。 So I considered DAVID'S adultery察and murder察and found them most heinous crimes察and those too committed after light and grace received此 but yet by considering that his transgressions were only such as were against the law of MOSES察from which the Lord Christ could察with the consent of His word察deliver him此 but mine was against the gospel察 yea察against the Mediator thereof察I had sold my Saviour。

。 Now again should I be as if racked upon the wheel察when I considered察that察besides the guilt that possessed me察I should be so void of grace察so bewitched。 What察thought I察must it be no sin but this拭 Must it needs be the GREAT TRANSGRESSION拭 Ps。 xix。 13。 Must THAT WICKED ONE touch my soul拭 1 John v。 18。 Oh what sting did I find in all these sentences

。 What察thought I察is there but ONE sin that is unpardonable拭 but ONE sin that layeth the soul without the reach of God's mercy察 and must I be guilty of THAT拭must it needs be that拭 Is there but one SIN among SO MANY millions of sins察for which there is no forgiveness察and must I commit this拭 Oh unhappy SIN Oh unhappy MAN These things would so break and confound my spirit察that I could not tell what to do察I thought at times察they would have broke my wits察and still察to aggravate my misery察that would run in my mind察YOU KNOW察HOW察THAT AFTERWARDS察WHEN HE WOULD HAVE INHERITED THE BLESSING察HE WAS REJECTED。 OH NO ONE KNOWS THE TERRORS OF THOSE DAYS BUT MYSELF。

。 After this I began to consider of PETER'S sin察which he committed in denying his Master此 and indeed察this came nighest to mine of any that I could find察for he had denied his Saviour察as I察 after light and mercy received察yea察and that too察after warning given him。 I also considered察that he did it both once and twice察 and that察after time to consider betwixt。 But though I put all these circumstances together察that察if possible I might find help察 yet I considered again察that his was but A DENIAL OF HIS MASTER察 but mine was察A SELLING OF MY SAVIOUR。 Wherefore I thought with myself察that I came nearer to JUDAS察than either to DAVID or PETER。

。 Here again my torment would flame out and afflict me察yea察it would grind me察as it were
