you some other time察and show you察too察the marks of it in every gravel pit
about here。 But now察I see察you want to ask a question察and what is it拭
Do I mean to say that water has made great valleys察such as you have
seen paintings and photographs ofvalleys thousands of feet deep察among
mountains thousands of feet high拭
Yes察I do。 But察as I said before察I do not like you to take my word
upon trust。 When you are older you shall go to the mountains察and you
shall judge for yourself。 Still察 I must say that I never saw a valley察
however deep察or a cliff察however high察which had not been scooped out
by water察and that even the mountain´tops which stand up miles aloft in
jagged peaks and pinnacles against the sky were cut out at first察and are
being cut and sharpened still察by little else save water察soft and hard察that is察
by rain察frost察and ice。
Water察 and nothing else察 has sawn out such a chasm as that through
which the ships run up to Bristol察between Leigh Wood and St。 Vincent's
Rocks。 Water察 and nothing else察 has shaped those peaks of the
Matterhorn察or the Weisshorn察or the Pic du Midi of the Pyrenees察of which

you have seen sketches and photographs。 Just so water might saw out
Hartford Bridge Flat察if it had time enough察into a labyrinth of valleys察and
hills察and peaks standing alone察as it has done already by Ambarrow察and
Edgbarrow察and the Folly Hill on the other side of the vale。
I see you are astonished at the notion that water can make Alps。 But it
was just because I knew you would be astonished at Madam How's doing
so great a thing with so simple a tool察that I began by showing you how
she was doing the same thing in a small way here upon these flats。 For
the safest way to learn Madam How's methods is to watch her at work in
little corners at commonplace business察which will not astonish or frighten
us察 nor put huge hasty guesses and dreams into our heads。 Sir Isaac
Newton察some will tell you察found out the great law of gravitation察which
holds true of all the suns and stars in heaven察by watching an apple fall此
and even if he did not find it out so察he found it out察we know察by careful
thinking over the plain and commonplace fact察 that things have weight。
So do you be humble and patient察and watch Madam How at work on little
things。 For that is the way to see her at work upon all space and time。
What拭you have a question more to ask拭
Oh I talked about Madam How lifting up Hartford Bridge Flat。 How
could she do that拭 My dear child察that is a long story察and I must tell it
you some other time。 Meanwhile察did you ever see the lid of a kettle rise
up and shake when the water inside boiled拭Of course察and of course察too察
remember that Madam How must have done it。 Then think over between
this and our next talk察what that can possibly have to do with her lifting up
Hartford Bridge Flat。 But you have been longing察perhaps察all this time
to hear more about Lady Why察 and why she set Madam How to make
Bracknell's Bottom。
My dear child察the only answer I dare give to that is此 Whatever other
purposes she may have made it for察she made it at least for thisthat you
and I should come to it this day察and look at察and talk over it察and become
thereby wiser and more earnest察and we will hope more humble and better
people。 Whatever else Lady Why may wish or not wish察this she wishes
always察to make all men wise and all men good。 For what is written of
her whom察as in a parable察I have called Lady Why拭

MADAM HOW AND LADY WHY
;The Lord possessed me in the beginning of His way察 before His
works of old。
;I was set up from everlasting察from the beginning察or ever the earth
was。
;When there were no depths察I was brought forth察when there were no
fountains abounding with water。
;Before the mountains were settled察 before the hills was I brought
forth此
;While as yet He had not made the earth察nor the fields察nor the highest
part of the dust of the world。
;When He prepared the heavens察I was there此 when He set a compass
upon the face of the depth此
;When He established the clouds above此 when He strengthened the
fountains of the deep此
;When He gave to the sea His decree察that the waters should not pass
His commandment此 when He appointed the foundations of the earth此
;Then I was by Him察as one brought up with Him此 and I was daily
His delight察rejoicing always before Him此
;Rejoicing in the habitable part of His earth察 and my delights were
with the sons of men。
;Now therefore hearken unto me察O ye children此 for blessed are they
that keep my ways。;
That we can say察for it has been said for us already。 But beyond that
we can say察and need say察very little。 We were not there察as we read in
the Book of Job察when God laid the foundations of the earth。 ;We see察─
says St。 Paul察 as in a glass darkly察and only know in part。; ;For who察─
he asks again察 has known the mind of the Lord察 or who hath been His
counsellor拭 。 。 For of Him察and through Him察and to Him察are all things此
to whom be glory for ever and ever。 Amen。; Therefore we must not
rashly say察this or that is Why a thing has happened察nor invent what are
called ;final causes察─which are not Lady Why herself察but only our little
notions of what Lady Why has done察or rather what we should have done
if we had been in her place。 It is not察indeed察by thinking that we shall
find out anything about Lady Why。 She speaks not to our eyes or to our

brains察 like Madam How察 but to that inner part of us which we call our
hearts and spirits察and which will endure when eyes and brain are turned
again to dust。 If your heart be pure and sober察 gentle and truthful察 then
Lady Why speaks to you without words察 and tells you things which
Madam How and all her pupils察the men of science察can never tell。 When
you lie察it may be察on a painful sick´bed察but with your mother's hand in
yours察 when you sit by her察 looking up into her loving eyes察 when you
gaze out towards the setting sun察and fancy golden capes and islands in the
clouds察and seas and lakes in the blue sky察and the infinite rest and peace
of the far west sends rest and peace into your young heart察till you sit silent
and happy察 you know not why察 when sweet music fills your heart with
noble and tender instincts which need no thoughts or words察 ay察 even
when you watch the raging thunderstorm察and feel it to be察in spite of its
great awfulness察 so beautiful that you cannot turn your eyes away此 at
such times as these Lady Why is speaking to your soul of souls察 and
saying察 My child察 this world is a new place察 and strange察 and often
terrible此 but be not afraid。 All will come right at last。 Rest will
conquer Restlessness察 Faith will conquer Fear察 Order will conquer
Disorder察 Health will conquer Sickness察 Joy will conquer Sorrow察
Pleasure will conquer Pain察Life will conquer Death察Right will conquer
Wrong。 All will be well at last。 Keep your soul and body pure察humble察
busy察piousin one word察be good此 and ere you die察or after you die察you
may have some glimpse of Me察the Everlasting Why此 and hear with the
ears察 not of your body but of your spirit察 men and all rational beings察
plants and animals察ay察the very stones beneath your feet察the clouds above
your head察 the planets and the suns away in farthest space察 singing
eternally察
;'Thou art worthy察O Lord察to receive glory and honour and power察for
Thou hast created all things察 and for Thy pleasure they are and were
