tomorrow would find her recovered察 and the idea of what

tomorrow would have produced察but for this unlucky illness察made

every ailment severe察 for on that day they were to have begun

their journey home察and察attended the whole way by a servant of

Mrs。 Jennings察were to have taken their mother by surprise on the

following forenoon。 The little she said was all in lamentation of

this inevitable delay察though Elinor tried to raise her spirits察and

make her believe察as she then really believed herself察that it would

be a very short one。

The next day produced little or no alteration in the state of the

patient察she certainly was not better察and察except that there was no

amendment察 did not appear worse。 Their party was now farther

reduced察for Mr。 Palmer察though very unwilling to go as well from

real humanity and good´nature察as from a dislike of appearing to

be frightened away by his wife察was persuaded at last by Colonel

Brandon to perform his promise of following her察 and while he

was preparing to go察 Colonel Brandon himself察 with a much

greater exertion察began to talk of going likewise。!Here察however察

the kindness of Mrs。 Jennings interposed most acceptably察 for to

send the Colonel away while his love was in so much uneasiness

on her sister¨s account察 would be to deprive them both察 she

thought察 of every comfort察 and therefore telling him at once that

his stay at Cleveland was necessary to herself察 that she should

want him to play at piquet of an evening察 while Miss Dashwood

was above with her sister察 &c。 she urged him so strongly to

remain察that he察who was gratifying the first wish of his own heart

by a compliance察could not long even affect to demur察especially as

Mrs。 Jennings¨s entreaty was warmly seconded by Mr。 Palmer察

who seemed to feel a relief to himself察 in leaving behind him a

person so well able to assist or advise Miss Dashwood in any

emergence。

Marianne was察 of course察 kept in ignorance of all these

arrangements。 She knew not that she had been the means of

sending the owners of Cleveland away察in about seven days from

the time of their arrival。 It gave her no surprise that she saw

nothing of Mrs。 Palmer察 and as it gave her likewise no concern察

she never mentioned her name。

Two days passed away from the time of Mr。 Palmer¨s departure察

and her situation continued察 with little variation察 the same。 Mr。

Harris察who attended her every day察still talked boldly of a speedy

recovery察 and Miss Dashwood was equally sanguine察 but the

expectation of the others was by no means so cheerful。 Mrs。

Jennings had determined very early in the seizure that Marianne

would never get over it察and Colonel Brandon察who was chiefly of

use in listening to Mrs。 Jennings¨s forebodings察was not in a state

of mind to resist their influence。 He tried to reason himself out of

fears察 which the different judgment of the apothecary seemed to

render absurd察but the many hours of each day in which he was

left entirely alone察 were but too favourable for the admission of

every melancholy idea察and he could not expel from his mind the

persuasion that he should see Marianne no more。

On the morning of the third day however察 the gloomy

anticipations of both were almost done away察for when Mr。 Harris

arrived察 he declared his patient materially better。 Her pulse was

much stronger察and every symptom more favourable than on the

preceding visit。 Elinor察confirmed in every pleasant hope察was all

cheerfulness察 rejoicing that in her letters to her mother察 she had

pursued her own judgment rather than her friend¨s察 in making

very light of the indisposition which delayed them at Cleveland察

and almost fixing on the time when Marianne would be able to

travel。

But the day did not close so auspiciously as it began。!Towards

the evening Marianne became ill again察 growing more heavy察

restless察and uncomfortable than before。 Her sister察however察still

sanguine察was willing to attribute the change to nothing more than

the fatigue of having sat up to have her bed made察 and carefully

administering the cordials prescribed察 saw her察 with satisfaction察

sink at last into a slumber察 from which she expected the most

beneficial effects。 Her sleep察though not so quiet as Elinor wished

to see it察 lasted a considerable time察 and anxious to observe the

result of it herself察she resolved to sit with her during the whole of

it。 Mrs。 Jennings察 knowing nothing of any change in the patient察

went unusually early to bed察 her maid察 who was one of the

principal nurses察 was recreating herself in the housekeeper¨s

room察and Elinor remained alone with Marianne。

The repose of the latter became more and more disturbed察and

her sister察who watched察with unremitting attention her continual

change of posture察and heard the frequent but inarticulate sounds

of complaint which passed her lips察 was almost wishing to rouse

her from so painful a slumber察 when Marianne察 suddenly

awakened by some accidental noise in the house察 started hastily

up察and察with feverish wildness察cried out察

    ^Is mama coming拭 ̄

^Not yet察院cried the other察concealing her terror察 and assisting

Marianne to lie down again察 but she will be here察I hope察before it

is long。 It is a great way察you know察from hence to Barton。 ̄

^But she must not go round by London察院cried Marianne察in the

same hurried manner。 ^I shall never see her察 if she goes by

London。 ̄

Elinor perceived with alarm that she was not quite herself察and察

while attempting to soothe her察eagerly felt her pulse。 It was lower

and quicker than ever and Marianne察still talking wildly of mama察

her alarm increased so rapidly察 as to determine her on sending

instantly for Mr。 Harris察and despatching a messenger to Barton

for her mother。 To consult with Colonel Brandon on the best

means of effecting the latter察 was a thought which immediately

followed the resolution of its performance察and as soon as she had

rung up the maid to take her place by her sister察 she hastened

down to the drawing´room察where she knew he was generally to be

found at a much later hour than the present。

It was no time for hesitation。 Her fears and her difficulties were

immediately before him。 Her fears察 he had no courage察 no

confidence to attempt the removal of察he listened to them in

silent despondence察but her difficulties were instantly obviated察

for with a readiness that seemed to speak the occasion察 and the

service pre´arranged in his mind察 he offered himself as the

messenger who should fetch Mrs。 Dashwood。 Elinor made no

resistance that was not easily overcome。 She thanked him with

brief察though fervent gratitude察and while he went to hurry off his

servant with a message to Mr。 Harris察and an order for post´horses

directly察she wrote a few lines to her mother。
