of Mrs。 Jennings察 who read it aloud with many comments of

satisfaction and praise。 ^Very well indeed how prettily she

That was just like Lucy。!Poor soul I wish I could get him a living察

with all my heart。!She calls me dear Mrs。 Jennings察you see。 She

is a good´hearted girl as ever lived。!Very well upon my word。

That sentence is very prettily turned。 Yes察 yes察 I will go and see

her察sure enough。 How attentive she is察to think of every body

Thank you察my dear察for shewing it me。 It is as pretty a letter as

ever I saw察and does Lucy¨s head and heart great credit。 ̄

                             CHAPTER III

he Miss Dashwoods had now been rather more than two

months in town察 and Marianne¨s impatience to be gone

T

increased every day。 She sighed for the air察the liberty察the

quiet of the country察and fancied that if any place could give her

ease察 Barton must do it。 Elinor was hardly less anxious than

herself for their removal察and only so much less bent on its being

effected immediately察as that she was conscious of the difficulties

of so long a journey察 which Marianne could not be brought to

acknowledge。 She began察however察seriously to turn her thoughts

towards its accomplishment察 and had already mentioned their

wishes to their kind hostess察 who resisted them with all the

eloquence of her good´will察 when a plan was suggested察 which察

though detaining them from home yet a few weeks longer察

appeared to Elinor altogether much more eligible than any other。

The Palmers were to remove to Cleveland about the end of March察

for the Easter holidays察and Mrs。 Jennings察with both her friends察

received a very warm invitation from Charlotte to go with them。

This would not察 in itself察 have been sufficient for the delicacy of

Miss Dashwood察but it was inforced with so much real politeness

by Mr。 Palmer himself察as察joined to the very great amendment of

his manners towards them since her sister had been known to be

unhappy察induced her to accept it with pleasure。

When she told Marianne what she had done察however察her first

reply was not very auspicious。

^Cleveland 院she cried察with great agitation。 ^No察I cannot go

to Cleveland。 ̄!

^You forget察院said Elinor gently察 that its situation is not 。 。 。 that

it is not in the neighbourhood of 。 。 。 ̄

^But it is in Somersetshire。!I cannot go into Somersetshire。!

There察where I looked forward to going 。 。 。 No察Elinor察you cannot

expect me to go there。 ̄

Elinor would not argue upon the propriety of overcoming such

feelings察she only endeavoured to counteract them by working

on others察represented it察 therefore察 as a measure which would

fix the time of her returning to that dear mother察 whom she so

much wished to see察in a more eligible察more comfortable manner察

than any other plan could do察 and perhaps without any greater

delay。 From Cleveland察 which was within a few miles of Bristol察

the distance to Barton was not beyond one day察 though a long

day¨s journey察and their mother¨s servant might easily come there

to attend them down察 and as there could be no occasion of their

staying above a week at Cleveland察they might now be at home in

little more than three weeks¨ time。 As Marianne¨s affection for her

mother was sincere察it must triumph with little difficulty察over the

imaginary evils she had started。

Mrs。 Jennings was so far from being weary of her guests察 that

she pressed them very earnestly to return with her again from

Cleveland。 Elinor was grateful for the attention察 but it could not

alter her design察 and their mother¨s concurrence being readily

gained察every thing relative to their return was arranged as far as

it could be察and Marianne found some relief in drawing up a

statement of the hours that were yet to divide her from Barton。

^Ah Colonel察I do not know what you and I shall do without the

Miss Dashwoods察院was Mrs。 Jennings¨s address to him when he

first called on her察 after their leaving her was settled!^for they

are quite resolved upon going home from the Palmers察and how

forlorn we shall be察 when I come back Lord we shall sit and

gape at one another as dull as two cats。 ̄

Perhaps Mrs。 Jennings was in hopes察by this vigorous sketch of

their future ennui察to provoke him to make that offer察which might

give himself an escape from it察and if so察she had soon afterwards

good reason to think her object gained察for察on Elinor¨s moving to

the window to take more expeditiously the dimensions of a print察

which she was going to copy for her friend察 he followed her to it

with a look of particular meaning察 and conversed with her there

for several minutes。 The effect of his discourse on the lady too察

could not escape her observation察 for though she was too

honourable to listen察and had even changed her seat察on purpose

that she might not hear察 to one close by the pianofort└ on which

Marianne was playing察she could not keep herself from seeing that

Elinor changed colour察attended with agitation察and was too intent

on what he said to pursue her employment。!Still farther in

confirmation of her hopes察 in the interval of Marianne¨s turning

from one lesson to another察some words of the Colonel¨s inevitably

reached her ear察 in which he seemed to be apologizing for the

badness of his house。 This set the matter beyond a doubt。 She

wondered察 indeed察 at his thinking it necessary to do so察 but

supposed it to be the proper etiquette。 What Elinor said in reply

she could not distinguish察but judged from the motion of her lips察

that she did not think that any material objection察and Mrs。

Jennings commended her in her heart for being so honest。 They

then talked on for a few minutes longer without her catching a

syllable察 when another lucky stop in Marianne¨s performance

brought her these words in the Colonel¨s calm voice察

^I am afraid it cannot take place very soon。 ̄

Astonished and shocked at so unlover´like a speech察 she was

almost ready to cry out察 Lord what should hinder it拭院but

checking her desire察confined herself to this silent ejaculation。

^This is very strange sure he need not wait to be older。 ̄

This delay on the Colonel¨s side察 however察 did not seem to

offend or mortify his fair companion in the least察 for on their

breaking up the conference soon afterwards察and moving different

ways察 Mrs。 Jennings very plainly heard Elinor say察 and with a

voice which shewed her to feel what she said察

^I shall always think myself very much obliged to you。 ̄

Mrs。 Jennings was delighted with her gratitude察 and only

wondered that after hearing such a sentence察 the Colonel should

be able to take leave of them察 as he immediately did察 with the

utmost sang´froid察and go away without making her any reply

She had not thought her old friend could have made so indifferent

a suitor。
