see the person that all my happiness depends on!that is to be my

mother 院

Elinor could have given her immediate relief by suggesting the

possibility of its being Miss Morton¨s mother察rather than her own察

whom they were about to behold察 but instead of doing that察 she

assured her察and with great sincerity察that she did pity her!to the

utter amazement of Lucy察 who察 though really uncomfortable

herself察 hoped at least to be an object of irrepressible envy to

Elinor。

Mrs。 Ferrars was a little察 thin woman察 upright察 even to

formality察 in her figure察 and serious察 even to sourness察 in her

aspect。 Her complexion was sallow察 and her features small察

without beauty察 and naturally without expression察 but a lucky

contraction of the brow had rescued her countenance from the

disgrace of insipidity察 by giving it the strong characters of pride

and ill nature。 She was not a woman of many words察 for察 unlike

people in general察 she proportioned them to the number of her

ideas察and of the few syllables that did escape her察not one fell to

the share of Miss Dashwood察 whom she eyed with the spirited

determination of disliking her at all events。

Elinor could not now be made unhappy by this behaviour。!A

few months ago it would have hurt her exceedingly察but it was not

in Mrs。 Ferrars¨ power to distress her by it now察and the

difference of her manners to the Miss Steeles察a difference which

seemed purposely made to humble her more察 only amused her。

She could not but smile to see the graciousness of both mother

and daughter towards the very person!for Lucy was particularly

distinguished!whom of all others察 had they known as much as

she did察they would have been most anxious to mortify察while she

herself察 who had comparatively no power to wound them察 sat

pointedly slighted by both。 But while she smiled at a graciousness

so misapplied察she could not reflect on the mean´spirited folly from

which it sprung察nor observe the studied attentions with which the

Miss Steeles courted its continuance察 without thoroughly

despising them all four。

Lucy was all exultation on being so honourably distinguished察

and Miss Steele wanted only to be teazed about Dr。 Davis to be

perfectly happy。

The dinner was a grand one察the servants were numerous察and

every thing bespoke the Mistress¨s inclination for show察 and the

Master¨s ability to support it。 In spite of the improvements and

additions which were making to the Norland estate察and in spite of

its owner having once been within some thousand pounds of being

obliged to sell out at a loss察 nothing gave any symptom of that

indigence which he had tried to infer from it察no poverty of any

kind察except of conversation察appeared!but there察the deficiency

was considerable。 John Dashwood had not much to say for himself

that was worth hearing察and his wife had still less。 But there was

no peculiar disgrace in this察for it was very much the case with the

chief of their visitors察who almost all laboured under one or other

of these disqualifications for being agreeable!Want of sense察

either natural or improved!want of elegance!want of spirits!or

want of temper。

When the ladies withdrew to the drawing´room after dinner察

this poverty was particularly evident察 for the gentlemen had

supplied the discourse with some variety!the variety of politics察

inclosing land察and breaking horses!but then it was all over察and

one subject only engaged the ladies till coffee came in察which was

the comparative heights of Harry Dashwood察 and Lady

Middleton¨s second son William察who were nearly of the same age。

Had both the children been there察 the affair might have been

determined too easily by measuring them at once察 but as Harry

only was present察 it was all conjectural assertion on both sides察

and every body had a right to be equally positive in their opinion察

and to repeat it over and over again as often as they liked。

    The parties stood thus此

The two mothers察 though each really convinced that her own

son was the tallest察politely decided in favour of the other。

The two grandmothers察 with not less partiality察 but more

sincerity察were equally earnest in support of their own descendant。

Lucy察 who was hardly less anxious to please one parent than

the other察 thought the boys were both remarkably tall for their

age察 and could not conceive that there could be the smallest

difference in the world between them察 and Miss Steele察 with yet

greater address gave it察as fast as she could察in favour of each。

Elinor察having once delivered her opinion on William¨s side察by

which she offended Mrs。 Ferrars and Fanny still more察did not see

the necessity of enforcing it by any farther assertion察 and

Marianne察 when called on for her¨s察 offended them all察 by

declaring that she had no opinion to give察 as she had never

thought about it。

Before her removing from Norland察 Elinor had painted a very

pretty pair of screens for her sister´in´law察 which being now just

mounted and brought home察 ornamented her present drawing

room察 and these screens察catching the eye of John Dashwood on

his following the other gentlemen into the room察 were officiously

handed by him to Colonel Brandon for his admiration。

^These are done by my eldest sister察院 said he察 and you察 as a

man of taste察will察I dare say察be pleased with them。 I do not know

whether you have ever happened to see any of her performances

before察but she is in general reckoned to draw extremely well。 ̄

The Colonel察 though disclaiming all pretensions to

connoisseurship察 warmly admired the screens察 as he would have

done any thing painted by Miss Dashwood察and on the curiosity of

the others being of course excited察 they were handed round for

general inspection。 Mrs。 Ferrars察not aware of their being Elinor¨s

work察 particularly requested to look at them察 and after they had

received gratifying testimony of Lady Middletons¨s approbation察

Fanny presented them to her mother察considerately informing her察

at the same time察that they were done by Miss Dashwood。

    ^Hum ̄!said Mrs。 Ferrars!^very pretty察院and without

regarding them at all察returned them to her daughter。

Perhaps Fanny thought for a moment that her mother had been

quite rude enough察for察colouring a little察she immediately said察
