engagement indeed after taking her all over Allenham House察and
fixing on the very rooms they were to live in hereafter 院
Elinor察for her sister¨s sake察could not press the subject farther察
and she hoped it was not required of her for Willoughby¨s察since察
though Marianne might lose much察he could gain very little by the
enforcement of the real truth。 After a short silence on both sides察
Mrs。 Jennings察with all her natural hilarity察burst forth again。
^Well察my dear察 tis a true saying about an ill´wind察for it will be
all the better for Colonel Brandon。 He will have her at last察 aye察
that he will。 Mind me察now察if they an¨t married by Mid´summer。
Lord how he¨ll chuckle over this news I hope he will come
tonight。 It will be all to one a better match for your sister。 Two
thousand a year without debt or drawback!except the little love´
child察indeed察aye察I had forgot her察but she may be ¨prenticed out
at a small cost察 and then what does it signify拭 Delaford is a nice
place察I can tell you察exactly what I call a nice old fashioned place察
full of comforts and conveniences察quite shut in with great garden
walls that are covered with the best fruit´trees in the country察and
such a mulberry tree in one corner Lord how Charlotte and I did
stuff the only time we were there Then察there is a dove´cote察some
delightful stew´ponds察and a very pretty canal察and every thing察in
short察 that one could wish for察 and察 moreover察 it is close to the
church察and only a quarter of a mile from the turnpike´road察so ¨tis
never dull察 for if you only go and sit up in an old yew arbour
behind the house察 you may see all the carriages that pass along。
Oh tis a nice place A butcher hard by in the village察 and the
parsonage´house within a stone¨s throw。 To my fancy察a thousand
times prettier than Barton Park察 where they are forced to send
three miles for their meat察and have not a neighbour nearer than

your mother。 Well察 I shall spirit up the Colonel as soon as I can。
One shoulder of mutton察you know察drives another down。 If we can
but put Willoughby out of her head 院
^Ay察 if we can do that察 Ma¨am察院 said Elinor察 we shall do very
well with or without Colonel Brandon。 ̄ And then rising察she went
away to join Marianne察 whom she found察as she expected察 in her
own room察 leaning察 in silent misery察 over the small remains of a
fire察which察till Elinor¨s entrance察had been her only light。
^You had better leave me察院 was all the notice that her sister
received from her。
^I will leave you察院said Elinor察 if you will go to bed。 ̄ But this察
from the momentary perverseness of impatient suffering察 she at
first refused to do。 Her sister¨s earnest察though gentle persuasion察
however察soon softened her to compliance察and Elinor saw her lay
her aching head on the pillow察and as she hoped察in a way to get
some quiet rest before she left her。
In the drawing´room察whither she then repaired察she was soon
joined by Mrs。 Jennings察 with a wine´glass察 full of something察 in
her hand。
^My dear察院 said she察 entering察 I have just recollected that I
have some of the finest old Constantia wine in the house that ever
was tasted察so I have brought a glass of it for your sister。 My poor
husband how fond he was of it Whenever he had a touch of his
old colicky gout察he said it did him more good than any thing else
in the world。 Do take it to your sister。 ̄
^Dear Ma¨am察院 replied Elinor察 smiling at the difference of the
complaints for which it was recommended察 how good you are
But I have just left Marianne in bed察 and察 I hope察 almost asleep察
and as I think nothing will be of so much service to her as rest察if

you will give me leave察I will drink the wine myself。 ̄
Mrs。 Jennings察 though regretting that she had not been five
minutes earlier察was satisfied with the compromise察and Elinor察as
she swallowed the chief of it察reflected察that though its effects on a
colicky gout were察 at present察 of little importance to her察 its
healing powers察 on a disappointed heart might be as reasonably
tried on herself as on her sister。
Colonel Brandon came in while the party were at tea察 and by
his manner of looking round the room for Marianne察 Elinor
immediately fancied that he neither expected nor wished to see
her there察 and察 in short察 that he was already aware of what
occasioned her absence。 Mrs。 Jennings was not struck by the same
thought察for soon after his entrance察she walked across the room to
the tea´table where Elinor presided察and whispered!^The Colonel
looks as grave as ever you see。 He knows nothing of it察do tell him察
my dear。 ̄
He shortly afterwards drew a chair close to her¨s察 and察 with a
look which perfectly assured her of his good information察inquired
after her sister。
^Marianne is not well察院said she。 ^She has been indisposed all
day察and we have persuaded her to go to bed。 ̄
^Perhaps察 then察院 he hesitatingly replied察 what I heard this
morning may be!there may be more truth in it than I could
believe possible at first。 ̄
^What did you hear拭院
^That a gentleman察whom I had reason to think!in short察that
a man察whom I knew to be engaged!but how shall I tell you拭 If
you know it already察as surely you must察I may be spared。 ̄
^You mean察院 answered Elinor察 with forced calmness察 Mr。

Willoughby¨s marriage with Miss Grey。 Yes察we do know it all。 This
seems to have been a day of general elucidation察 for this very
morning first unfolded it to us。 Mr。 Willoughby is unfathomable
Where did you hear it拭院
^In a stationer¨s shop in Pall Mall察 where I had business。 Two
ladies were waiting for their carriage察and one of them was giving
the other an account of the intended match察 in a voice so little
attempting concealment察that it was impossible for me not to hear
all。 The name of Willoughby察 John Willoughby察 frequently
repeated察 first caught my attention察 and what followed was a
positive assertion that every thing was now finally settled
respecting his marriage with Miss Grey!it was no longer to be a
secret!it would take place even within a few weeks察 with many
particulars of preparations and other matters。 One thing察
especially察I remember察because it served to identify the man still
more此as soon as the ceremony was over察 they were to go to
Combe Magna察his seat in Somersetshire。 My astonishment but
it would be impossible to describe what I felt。 The communicative
lady I learnt察 on inquiry察 for I stayed in the shop till they were
gone察was a Mrs。 Ellison察and that察as I have been since informed察
is the name of Miss Grey¨s guardian。 ̄
^It is。 But have you likewise heard that Miss Grey has fifty
thousand pounds拭 In that察 if in any thing察 we may find an
explanation。 ̄
^It may be so察but Willoughby is capable!at least I think ̄!he
stopped a moment察then added in a voice which seemed to distrust
