finally settled拭 Is it impossible to !拭 But I have no right察 and I
could have no chance of succeeding。 Excuse me察Miss Dashwood。 I
believe I have been wrong in saying so much察but I hardly know
what to do察 and on your prudence I have the strongest
dependence。 Tell me that it is all absolutely resolved on察that any
attempt察that in short concealment察if concealment be possible察is
all that remains。 ̄
These words察 which conveyed to Elinor a direct avowal of his
love for her sister察 affected her very much。 She was not
immediately able to say anything察and even when her spirits were
recovered察she debated for a short time察on the answer it would be
most proper to give。 The real state of things between Willoughby
and her sister was so little known to herself察that in endeavouring
to explain it察she might be as liable to say too much as too little。

Yet as she was convinced that Marianne¨s affection for
Willoughby察 could leave no hope of Colonel Brandon¨s success察
whatever the event of that affection might be察 and at the same
time wished to shield her conduct from censure察 she thought it
most prudent and kind察after some consideration察to say more than
she really knew or believed。 She acknowledged察 therefore察 that
though she had never been informed by themselves of the terms
on which they stood with each other察of their mutual affection she
had no doubt察and of their correspondence she was not astonished
to hear。
He listened to her with silent attention察 and on her ceasing to
speak察 rose directly from his seat察 and after saying in a voice of
emotion察 to your sister I wish all imaginable happiness察 to
Willoughby that he may endeavour to deserve her察院took leave察
and went away。
Elinor derived no comfortable feelings from this conversation察
to lessen the uneasiness of her mind on other points察she was left察
on the contrary察 with a melancholy impression of Colonel
Brandon¨s unhappiness察and was prevented even from wishing it
removed察by her anxiety for the very event that must confirm it。

othing occurred during the next three or four days察 to
make Elinor regret what she had done察 in applying to
N
her mother察 for Willoughby neither came nor wrote。
They were engaged about the end of that time to attend Lady
Middleton to a party察from which Mrs。 Jennings was kept away by
the indisposition of her youngest daughter察 and for this party察
Marianne察 wholly dispirited察 careless of her appearance察 and
seeming equally indifferent whether she went or staid察 prepared察
without one look of hope or one expression of pleasure。 She sat by
the drawing´room fire after tea察 till the moment of Lady
Middleton¨s arrival察without once stirring from her seat察or altering
her attitude察lost in her own thoughts察and insensible of her sister¨s
presence察 and when at last they were told that Lady Middleton
waited for them at the door察she started as if she had forgotten that
any one was expected。
They arrived in due time at the place of destination察 and as
soon as the string of carriages before them would allow察alighted察
ascended the stairs察 heard their names announced from one
landing´place to another in an audible voice察and entered a room
splendidly lit up察quite full of company察and insufferably hot。 When
they had paid their tribute of politeness by curtsying to the lady of
the house察they were permitted to mingle in the crowd察and take
their share of the heat and inconvenience察 to which their arrival
must necessarily add。 After some time spent in saying little or
doing less察Lady Middleton sat down to Casino察and as Marianne

was not in spirits for moving about察 she and Elinor luckily
succeeding to chairs察placed themselves at no great distance from
the table。
They had not remained in this manner long察 before Elinor
perceived Willoughby察 standing within a few yards of them察 in
earnest conversation with a very fashionable looking young
woman。 She soon caught his eye察and he immediately bowed察but
without attempting to speak to her察 or to approach Marianne察
though he could not but see her察and then continued his discourse
with the same lady。 Elinor turned involuntarily to Marianne察to see
whether it could be unobserved by her。 At that moment she first
perceived him察 and her whole countenance glowing with sudden
delight察she would have moved towards him instantly察had not her
sister caught hold of her。
^Good heavens 院she exclaimed察 he is there!he is there!Oh
why does he not look at me拭why cannot I speak to him拭院
^Pray察 pray be composed察院 cried Elinor察 and do not betray
what you feel to every body present。 Perhaps he has not observed
you yet。 ̄
This however was more than she could believe herself察and to
be composed at such a moment was not only beyond the reach of
Marianne察 it was beyond her wish。 She sat in an agony of
impatience which affected every feature。
At last he turned round again察 and regarded them both察 she
started up察and pronouncing his name in a tone of affection察held
out her hand to him。 He approached察 and addressing himself
rather to Elinor than Marianne察as if wishing to avoid her eye察and
determined not to observe her attitude察 inquired in a hurried
manner after Mrs。 Dashwood察and asked how long they had been

in town。 Elinor was robbed of all presence of mind by such an
address察 and was unable to say a word。 But the feelings of her
sister were instantly expressed。 Her face was crimsoned over察and
she exclaimed察 in a voice of the greatest emotion察 Good God
Willoughby察what is the meaning of this拭 Have you not received
my letters拭Will you not shake hands with me拭院
He could not then avoid it察but her touch seemed painful to him察
and he held her hand only for a moment。 During all this time he
was evidently struggling for composure。 Elinor watched his
countenance and saw its expression becoming more tranquil。
After a moment¨s pause察he spoke with calmness。
^I did myself the honour of calling in Berkeley´street last
Tuesday察and very much regretted that I was not fortunate enough
to find yourselves and Mrs。 Jennings at home。 My card was not
lost察I hope。 ̄
^But have you not received my notes拭院 cried Marianne in the
wildest anxiety。 ^Here is some mistake I am sure!some dreadful
mistake。 What can be the meaning of it拭Tell me察Willoughby察for
heaven¨s sake tell me察what is the matter拭院
He made no reply察 his complexion changed and all his
embarrassment returned察 but as if察 on catching the eye of the
young lady with whom he had been previously talking察he felt the
necessity of instant exertion察he recovered himself again察and after
saying察 Yes察 I had the pleasure of receiving the information of
your arrival in town察 which you were so good as to send me察院
turned hastily away with a slight bow and join
